A CurtainUp Review George Gershwin Alone
The language he spoke was an eclectic one-black-face humour, Russian sentimentality, Jewish sorrow, Broadway pep and French ooh-la-la. In short, typically American. It made our worlds one world Abram Chasin Hershey Felder as George Gershwin George Gershwin is deservedly an American musical legend. If he'd written nothing but "American Rhapsody", he would deserve a place in musical history. But in a tragically brief life he also composed a thrilling folk opera, Porgy and Bess , and countless brilliant show tunes. Our lives are enriched by the music he left behind, and poorer for the music that might have been had he lived a normal life span.

In early 2003, Warner Bros. Publications will be issuing Dr. Alicia Zizzo's transcription for solo piano of George Gershwin's 'I Got Rhythm' Variations. This will be the first such published edition of this piece The composer wrote his variations for piano and orchestra in 1934. Dr. Zizzo has written the following, "The task of transcribing a piece as complex as 'I Got Rhythm' Variations was enormous. I felt obliged to maintain the integrity of the interrelated group of variations with their individual ideas as they formed an integrated whole. In order to successfully reduce the thousands of notes an entire orchestra plays in this work to two hands, I had to develop a deep understanding of the intricate and elegant weaving of Gershwin's harmonies as he continually reworked four little notes. I determined that I would preserve as many chordal, verbal and dynamic directives as ten fingers would allow. For this I relied heavily on his original manuscripts." You can read the entire Forward Dr. Zizzo has written for the Warner Bros. publication at

Rhapsody in Blue or his Concerto in F . An entire recital of published classical solo piano pieces by Gershwin was almost impossible if one didn't include their own or others' arrangements in order to fill out a program. George Gershwin entered my life when I was invited to tour Eastern Europe with the Concerto in F . My disdain was palpable until I saw the score. Dr. Buhler's words became my mantra: "Study the score, it's all there ..." Gershwin's soul was indeed locked in the notes. I was awed by the beauty and embarrassed by my own intellectual hubris and I determined to remedy some long held myths about this great genius. I wanted to expand his classical piano literature and I needed help. It came from the eminent Gershwin scholar Edward Jablonski. It was he, along with the blessing of the Gershwin Estate, who led me to the original Gershwin manuscripts that ultimately resulted in the following Warner Bros. publications , thus providing a glimpse into Gershwin's development: LULLABY (1919) - First composed as a piano sketch in preparation for his string quartet, and reconstructed as a piano solo, 'Lullaby' contains the rhythmic motives and themes of 'Rhapsody in Blue'. It represents an Impressionist's stroll into dreams and yet the unfaltering bass gives the piece a constant pulse. Gershwin's skills as a composer are obvious even in this early work. His clever use of a simple theme over and over again without creating redundancy is a masterstroke that would fell lesser talents. Although in each statement the theme is played differently, it does not morph into variations. A second theme becomes

George Gershwin
Most Americans are familiar with George Gershwin's music whether they know it or not. More than 60 years after his death, the composer's songs still turn up in ads and on the albums of contemporary artists such as Harry Connick Jr. Even listeners who can't recall their names would likely recognize "Rhapsody in Blue," "An American in Paris" and portions of "Porgy and Bess." Gershwin first displayed his talent at the age of 12, when he sat down at his family's new piano and played songs by ear. He later took lessons, then quit school at 15 to work as a pianist for a music publisher on New York's "Tin Pan Alley." He sold his first song in 1916, when the Harry Von Tilzer Music Co. bought "When You Want 'Em, You Can't Get'Em, When You've Got 'Em, You Don't Want 'Em," written with Murray Roth. The Brooklyn native was among the first to introduce jazz rhythms into popular songs. He often teamed up with his older brother, Ira, who wrote most of the lyrics. Their collaborations resulted in several revues and Broadway musicals, including "Oh, Kay!" "Strike Up the Band" and the satirical "Of Thee I Sing," which won a Pulitzer Prize. Gershwin also produced sophisticated concert pieces. His "Rhapsody in Blue" wowed the audience at its 1924 debut with Paul Whiteman's orchestra and Gershwin on piano. In addition, he composed the tone poem "An American in Paris" as well as "Concerto in F," "Preludes For Piano" and "Second Rhapsody."

Actor-pianist-composer Hershey Felder as George Gershwin "George Gershwin Alone," the only one-man show ever permitted by the heirs of the composer for the commercial stage, began in the shadow of the Holocaust. The year was 1995. Actor-pianist-composer Hershey Felder, fluent in French, Hebrew, Yiddish and English, had been invited to Poland to conduct interviews for Steven Spielberg's Survivors of the Shoah Visual History Foundation. Late one wintry night, he was summoned to the Cafe Haus in the old Jewish section of Cracow, where Helmuth Spryczer, who as a youth had been pressed into service as gofer to the notorious Dr. Josef Mengele, described how he used to amuse the Auschwitz guards by whistling Gershwin's "Rhapsody in Blue." The piece saved his life, Spryczer said, though as he whistled he heard in the notes the clackity-clack of the cattle-cars and the screams of the dying. As Felder played the piece on the cafe's honky-tonk piano, well past midnight, he heard the screams, too. Three years later, his monologue "SING! A Musical Journey" told the story of the survivor and the "Rhapsody" and earned mostly good reviews at UCLA's Freud Playhouse. The Los Angeles Times, in a laudatory notice, said that viewers would "never hear the 'Rhapsody' the same way again." Gershwin's heirs were not pleased. Apparently they were concerned that the play associated their forebear with the Holocaust.

Gershwin / Fazil Say, New York PO > Customer Review #1: This is one of my absolute favorite Gershwin CDs

Theres some rather rare pieces on this CDincluding the wonderful cakewalk Novelette in Fourths. Gershwin wrote some wonderful jazz-style preludes for piano, but usually only three are recorded. There are a number of other short piano works that are delightful and practically impossible to find on CD. Fortunately, they are here, along with some favorites from Porgy and Bess and other piano arrangements of Gershwin songs such as the virtuoso "I Got Rhythm" variations. Whats really great is that Fazil Say plays these with humor and lightness. No heavy, pseudo-scholarly seriousness here. He makes the most of his pianistic skill and yet retains the spirit of Gershwins playfulness and fun. This is definitely a must-have if you love Gershwin.

"George Gershwin Alone"
Airdate: June 18, 2002
"Rhapsody in Blue," "American in Paris," "Bess, You is My Woman Now:" the works of George Gershwin take up several chapters in the American songbook. The story of Gershwin's life, however, is less well known.
The prolific composer wrote over 1,000 pieces during the course of his short life. He died of a brain tumor at what someone called the "criminally young" age of 38.
Recently the songs, and the stories behind them, were brought together in a one-man show entitled "George Gershwin Alone An Imagination with Music," created and performed by pianist Hershey Felder.
Last season it was a hit on Broadway, and now it's beginning a three week engagement at the American Repertory Theatre in Cambridge, MA.

    Playing Gershwin
    With Hershey Felder,
Actor, Pianist, Playwright, "George Gershwin Alone" Friday, Jan. 31, 2003; Noon ET In "George Gershwin Alone," actor, pianist and playwright Hershey Felder plays the American composer looking back at his life and work, in a one-man show now playing at Ford's Theatre in Washington, D.C. George and brother Ira wrote standards such as "The Man I Love," "Someone to Watch Over Me," "'S Wonderful," "I Got Rhythm," "Embraceable You," among many more, plus the groundbreaking opera, "Porgy and Bess," considered an American classic and, of course, "Rhapsody in Blue." All told, the brothers wrote more than 1,000 songs for the stage and screen as well as works for the opera house and symphony orchestra. Felder paints a portrait of the Gershwin who wrote the melodies and in the show talks about how he and brother Ira collaborated on songs America would grow to love and remember. Felder is the only individual to whom the Gershwin family has granted permission to create and perform the role of George Gershwin. He was online

Hershey Felder brings to life the spirit and talent of the legendary composer and pianist for the first time in history, as he leads you through the fascinating rythmns of Gershwin's music and tragically short life. Hear the music; meet the man - George Gershwin Alone Extracts from the reviews "...Armed with just a grand piano and a reasonable physical resemblance to Gershwin, Felder takes us on a musical tour of his all-too-short life... All this is entertaining, but the show never really gets beneath the skin of the man or explains the contradicting views on his life, his personality and his music. Neither does it quite overcome the essential weirdness of having a character stand there and tell you how he died. What it does suggest is Gershwin's absolute drive to succeed..." The Financial Times "...Felder barely scratches the surface of one of the most famous names in 20th century music. This is the first portrayal that the Gershwin Estates has allowed, and it shows. Any potentially tricky issues, such as Gershwin's reputed womanising, are glossed over in favour of the motif repeated in a major key crescendo; that as a serious composer, he was unfairly overlooked by the critics... Essentially self-taught, George Gershwin was first a song plugger in Tin Pan Alley and an accompanist. In his teens he began to compose popular songs and produced a succession of musicals from 1919 to 1933 (Lady, be Good!, 1924; Oh, Kay!, 1926; Strike up the Band, 1927; Funny Face, 1927; Girl Crazy, 1930); the lyrics were generally by his brother Ira (1896-1983). Gershwin's parents, Rosa and Moishe Gershovitz migrated from St. Petersburg in Russia to New York in 1891 and the family name was Americanised as Gerwvin and later adapted to Gershwin. Their first son Israel (Ira) was born in 1896 and George, their second son, was born on the 26th September 1898. In 1910, his mother purchased a piano for Ira, but it was George who quickly took to it, playing popular melodies on it. George's exceptional natural ability on the piano was soon recognised and his parents arranged for him to have lessons. After suffering from the hands of several bad teachers, he became a pupil, in 1912, of Charles Hambitzer. Inspired by his teacher's enthusiastic approach to both old and modern classics, George pondered the idea of becoming a concert pianist. Given his lack of interest in the academic fields, his parents made a last ditch attempt to give him a stable career and arranged for him to go to an accountancy school. However in 1914, the 15 year old persuaded his mother to allow him to leave school to take up a job as a song salesman. Gershwin found work promoting the popular song music of the Tin Pan Alley song publisher, Remick's. His starting salary was $15 a week. The job was arduous, had long hours and consisted mostly of playing the piano in a little booth, accompanying amateur singers. He was successful and was soon in demand with regular clients. Remick's asked him to record some piano rolls for them at $5 a roll, something which he did for them and other publishers for a number of years, to supplement his income.
