Chopin: Etudes, Opp. 10 and 25 > Customer Review #1: Fantastic!

This rendition of Chopins Etudes is surely one of the best ive ever listened to. Andrei Gravilov has an extraodinary technique and every Etude is perfomed not only perfectly but with so much passion and fire to astonish the listener. At the moment i own nine sets of these beautiful pieces and this one along with Boris Berezovsky and Juana Zayas is the best in my opinion. All the others (Pollini, Peraya, Ashkenazy, Chiu, Cziffra, Cherkassky)are really notable and very different. I love all of them though Berezosky, Gravilov and Zayas stand a part for the passion overall, the lyricism and beyond-descripion technique displayed.
    Highly recommended!

    http://www.newportmusic.org/2003_history.htm
History of The Newport Music Festival The Newport Music Festival was founded in 1969 as an attempt by the Metropolitan Opera to establish a summer season in Newport, much like the Boston Symphony at Tanglewood. However, outdoor opera is not a natural for Newport—the fog rolled in, the sopranos couldn’t sing, and an instrument literally fell apart on stage. What did happen, however, is that a few far-sighted, creative persons visited Newport’s extraordinary mansions and realized the possibility of performing chamber music in the kind of grand rooms for which that music had originally been written. The early Festival utilized many members of the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra and was the forerunner of the Romantic revival, so popular now worldwide. Approaching its 35 rd season, the Newport Music Festival still offers music of the Romantic era—roughly 1825-1900—but in recent years it has expanded the dates and now presents a wide spectrum, from Bach to Berio. The Festival has had dozens of world premieres of contemporary composers as well as rare discoveries of forgotten minor masterpieces. For instance, the Festival presented the world premiere of a four-hand Andante Cantabile by Claude Debussy, found in manuscript at the Pierpont Morgan Library in New York, and an unknown

Daniel Martyn Lewis performed an all-Bach program for his North American premiere. The Formal Opening Night Gala concert featured the spectacular Russian pianist Andrei Gavrilov , returning for his 25th anniversary season, in a stirring concert of Bach and Chopin. Gold medalist of the famed Tchaikovsky Competition, Gavrilov was one of the first young Russians to appear in America. Illustrious piano performances were likewise presented by Agustin Anievas John Bayless Bernadene Blaha Victor Borge Mirian Conti Kevin Fitz-Gerald Kemal Gekic Carlo Grante Alain Jacquon Francine Kay Piers Lane Valentina Lisitsa Hamish Milne Pedja Muzijevic Juana Zayas Thomas Hrynkiw , and Yamaha artists Frederic Chiu and Anne-Marie McDermott "Every year seems to be another knock-out. Yamaha has been a major sponsor of the Newport Music Festival since 1987. I can't imagine doing this festival without them," Malkovich admits. "Yamaha has been so helpful. The pianos always arrive on time, properly tuned, and with 64 concerts spread over 17 days, that's extremely important to us. Logistically, it was flawless, and much of that was due to the cooperation of Yamaha."
John Bayless at The Breakers The Newport Music Festival, long synonymous with outstanding classical performances in a Rhode Island community renowned for seaside elegance, garnered yet another accolade last February. For the second consecutive year, it was chosen by Cadogan Press as one of "America's Elite 1000 - The Ultimate List," placing Newport in company with just 19 other national events including the Academy Awards, the U.S. Open Tennis Tournament, and The Metropolitan Opera.

    Below: Prokofiev with Mira Mendelson

    by Ian MacDonald
    Part Three: The Protest Music
In an official symposium on the composer in 1954, Ilya Ehrenburg, encoding his meaning in the way customary under such circumstances, observed: "Posterity will not be able to understand our difficult and glorious period of life without intently listening to the works of Sergei Prokofiev, and contemplating his extraordinary fate." Had Ehrenburg said this about Shostakovich, few Western pundits (in recent years, at least) would have missed what he was getting at. Applying similar criteria to Prokofiev, however, is still quite a new idea. Though much of his brisk arrogance was curbed by the adversity of his final years, Prokofiev remained fundamentally self-centred, interested chiefly in his own inner world. His capacity, or desire, to empathise with the lot of other people being limited, it is hardly surprising that, compared with Shostakovich, his work should be thinner on tragic subtexts. All too often brilliantly one-dimensional, a large part of Prokofiev's music is that of a clever, derisive child, achieving its best effects in the context of fairy-tale, romanticised history, or nostalgia for boyhood. As with Ravel, whom he particularly admired, Prokofiev's engagement with the practical world of adulthood was reluctant (and often sarcastically ill-tempered). Unlike Ravel, however, it was his "extraordinary fate" to be forced to see far enough beyond his own predicament for his creativity to deepen in spite of itself. Whatever else it did to him, life in the USSR made him grow up.
