Andrusenko June 6 is Pushkin Day in Russia. It was established 3 years ago when Russia celebrated the bicentennial of the great poet Alexander Pushkin. His contemporary, writer Nikolai Gogol once made a prophetic remark: "Pushkin is a phenomenon of Russian spirit, a Russian man such as he is and will probably be 200 years after". Preparations for Pushkin Days festivities start long before June. Poetry festivals, theatre productions, art exhibitions, concerts, and, finally, balls - these are just a few events on the holiday's vast and versatile program. Pushkin's memorial museums invite visitors to admire the beautiful nature he eulogized in his poems. The Pushkin family estate in Mikhailovskoye is situated near the city of Pskov in the north-west of Russia. The typical Russian landscape intertwined with the traditional Russian way of life "create a harmony that leaves no one indifferent. The main point I would like to make regarding this production is that it is based on instruments which Bach did not write for nor intend this work to be presented on. Chronologically, the fortepiano emerged only towards the last few years of Bach's career and at that stage was vastly inferior to today's established instrument. While the piano as an instrument has many strengths and is excellent for the Romantic and High Classical composers it is simply inferior for Baroque music and therefore for Bach. However, pianists have been able to get away with playing Bach because, not to put too fine a point on it, Bach would still sound excellent played on bagpipes. Why? Because the strength of Bach's imagination and perfect understanding of musical fundamentals mean that his compositions are musically so robust that they travel well through many media.

Back to Intro Sergio Fiorentino Memorial Site II S E R G I O F I O R E N T I N O pianist musician Reactions to his concerts appearances Tuesday night in The Breakers Fiorentino opened the Newport Festival by making his first American appearance in 43 years. A courtly gentleman with an aureole of white hair, Fiorentino looks like a pianist in an old movie - or like photographs of the German pianist Wilhelm Kempff. Fiorentino, like Horowitz or Dubravka Tomsic, is undemonstrative at the keyboard; he doesn't have time for theater, because there is so much color and drama in the actual playing. The first half of the recital was "serious", the second devoted to entertainment - but these are false distinctions. Fiorentino's performance of the Schumann "Fantasy" was architecturally sound, but it was also full of darting, unexspected departures and a sense of play. And like the great pianists of the past, Fiorentino doesn't play transcriptions of waltzes to show off his virtuosity but to celebrate the waltz in all its intricate, teasing glory. The waltzes were the Liszt version of the Kermesse from Gounod's "Faust", Fiorentino's transcriptions of a Tchaikovsky waltz and a sequence of waltzes from "Der Rosenkavalier", Tausig's transcription of Strauss' "Man lebt nur einmal!" and the masterpiece fo the genre, Godowsky's "Symphonic Metamor- phoses on Themes from Die Fledermaus". Fiorentino neatly discriminated among the various national styles; and his iridescent scales, glissandi, arpeggios, chords, double notes, and octaves, his opalescent shifting harmonies, and his superbly secure and supple rhythmic sense wre not virtuoso tricks but ornaments devised to dramatize the curve of each dance in delirious movement.

Without hesitation she accepted to undertake this monumental task. Molto Prokofiev! Maar de overeenkomsten houden ergens op, en vrij plotseling. Prokofiev toont een grotere ernst, zijn Russisch temperament, met een voorkeur voor donkere kleuren. Poulenc blijft sprankelend, ironisch en op zijn tijd wordt hij zelfs lichtzinnig. Zijn palet kent minder kleuren dan dat van Prokofiev, maar hij lijkt ook met minder toe te kunnen. Poulenc kent weliswaar ernstige en zelfs religieuze momenten, maar een vrolijk lied gaat hem boven alles. Prokofiev daarentegen heeft een verhaal te vertellen en waar Prokofiev nog moet beginnen met het relaas in zijn pianosonates en het diepgaande derde deel van het eerste strijkkwartet, zwijgt Poulenc. Het door mij al genoemde eerste deel van het eerste kwartet wordt furieus ingezet en de verwerking van het materiaal getuigt van een niet aflatende energie en concentratie. Het Andante zou misschien wat meer kunnen ademen, door in tempo-nuances de grillige structuur beter te doen uitkomen, maar die kritiek doet niets af aan de spanningsboog die het Kwartet hier weet op te bouwen. Verrukkelijk is het tweede kwartet, dat vaker gespeeld zou moeten worden op de concertpodia - en het liefst zo goed als het Coull Kwartet het hier doet. De hoekige ritmes, krachtig neergezet en afgewisseld met momenten van hemelbestormende lyriek, laten de luisteraar ademloos achter. Ik kan niet anders dan een spoedige beluistering van harte aanbevelen. Veel opnames van deze twee strijkkwartetten zijn er niet, dus we boffen met zo'n volwaardige toevoeging aan de bestaande interpretaties. De toegift, de Overture on Hebrew Themes, wordt in een kalm tempo neergezet. Iets sneller had zeker geen kwaad gekund, al sluit de ingetogen atmosfeer uitstekend aan op het slepende ritme. Het accelerando en het krachtige accoord aan het einde bewijzen het gelijk van degene die dit stuk graag wat pittiger zou willen horen. In dat geval zou de finale beter op zijn plaats vallen. Toch verdient deze interpretatie, die opklinkt als vanuit het schemerduister, alle respect en aandacht. Dit opdrachtwerkje, dat Prokofiev in anderhalve dag voltooide, krijgt door deze musici alle zeggingskracht mee die er qua potentie in besloten ligt.

Without hesitation she accepted to undertake this monumental task. He was not a flashy artist, nor was he grimly severe. Rather, he practiced a sort of natural eloquence of expression that made his Beethoven one of the most satisfying over the long haul. Individual moments may rarely leap out and grab you, but his performances leave a satisfying impression of completeness, as if no stone has been left unturned. These performances have been highly regarded since the early 1960s, and with good reason. They offer an admirable picture of Kempff as an artist, and the accompaniments are quite fine.
