was born in Moscow in 1955. He won first prize in the 1974 International Tchaikovsky Competition and in the same year made a triumphant international debut at the Salzburg Festival. He has subsequently enjoyed a distinguished international career which has included performances with many of the world's greatest orchestras. Andrei Gavrilov made his London debut in 1976 with Paavo Berglund and the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra in the Royal Festival Hall. In 1978 he performed with the Berlin Philharmonic in a major European concert tour. By 1980 he had performed in all the major cultural centres in the world. Andrei Gavrilov made a triumphant return to the British concert platform in 1984, after a politically enforced absence, giving recitals at the Barbican and the Royal Festival Hall. He successfully petitioned Mikhail Gorbachev for his freedom, and became the first Soviet artist to be granted permission to stay in the West without having to file for political asylum. Following his Carnegie Hall debut in 1985, Andrei Gavrilov was proclaimed as a major artist by the New York Times' Donal Henahan. He has since performed with orchestras in New York, Chicago, Philadelphia and Montreal, London, Vienna, Paris, Berlin, Munich, Amsterdam and Tokyo, with conductors including Abbado, Haitink, Muti, Ozawa, Svetlanov and Tennstedt. Recent engagements include recitals in Warsaw, San Sebastian, Bilbao, Rome, Tallinn, Athens and Lisbon.

OVERALL NOISE RATING: 1 (more rustling plastic.) The Noise Rating Index is a partially-objective measurement of pager and handphone blasts, 9pm and 10pm watch beeps, coughing-during-the-pianissimo-bits, intra-audience conversation and other mind-bogglingly inept noises emitted in the concert hall during actual performance of music. It is measured on a scale of to 5, in increasing annoyance. This review has been kindly sponsored by the Singapore Symphonia Co. Ltd Last Concert Reviewed Next Week's Concert by Johann D'Souza the Nutcase Gavrilov - one would either loathe him for his antics or loved him. The crossing of the legs waiting for the orchestra to come in during the second movement, gazing at the audience through his shades with an odd mixture of amusement and "contempt", his queer disco black jacket, his pony-tail, jewelry, rings and chains - just like an Italian mafia boss. Not the usual sort of character one portrays the Russian pianist as, especially if one had just been to the recent piano festival and listened to Nikolai Lugansky

Pianist Andrei Gavrilov in the West
Article # : Section : THE ARTS Issue Date : 3,999 Words Author : Bella Shiuk
Editor's note: The author, Bella Shiuk, was a good friend of the parents of Andrei Gavrilov and has known the pianist since he was born. A pianist herself, she occasionally coached the young Andrei when he was under his mother's tutelage. Her close connection to the Russian pianist yields unusual insights into the man and artist.
A little over two years have passed since Andrei Gavrilov, 1974 winner of the Tchaikovsky Competition, came to the West on a concert tour after a six-year hiatus. Following the invasion of Afghanistan in 1979, the Russian pianist was not allowed to appear outside his native land except for occasional forays to make recordings. In the relatively short time since his reemergence in the West in March 1985, Gavrilov has performed in Britain, West Germany, France, Italy, Switzerland, the United States, Japan, Canada, and other countries as well. He has taken part in some of the most prestigious summer festivals, such as the Salzburg and Ravinia '85 festivals, to name just two. New York Times music critic Donal Henahan wrote after Gavrilov's Carnegie Hall debut on April 28, 1985: "Was Mr. Gavrilov worth the wait? Decidedly yes....He...is a major artist of a special type."

Pianist Andrei Gavrilov A native of Moscow, Andrei Gavrilov is another of that group of pianists who were trained under the Soviet system but flourished outside it. His earliest musical instruction was from his mother, though he later studied with the legendary Lev Naumov. After winning the Tchaikovsky Competition in 1974, he set out on an international career that won him many plaudits. However, in 1979 Soviet authorities barred him from traveling. Five years later he petitioned Mikhail Gorbachev and became the first Soviet artist to be granted permission to stay in the West without having to file for political asylum.
He has had an active career since. He is sometimes criticized for an aggressive style, but Rachmaninoff's Third Piano Concerto, which he will play with the DSO in Munich, is a specialty that has earned him much praise.

Boris Berezovsky Russian pianist Boris Berezovsky made his Dallas Symphony Orchestra debut in 1998, playing the same Rachmaninoff Third Piano Concerto that he'll play seven times in Europe. (In Munich he'll be replaced by Andrei Gavrilov.)
He reprised the Rachmaninoff with the DSO last summer at the Bravo! Vail Valley Music Festival in Colorado. Trained at the Moscow State Conservatory, Mr. Berezovsky sprang to international attention in 1990 as gold medallist of the International Tchaikovsky Competition. Since then he has performed and recorded widely.

It is most fortunate that DG has released Bach s Goldberg Variations in4D digital sound, played by the Russian pianist andrei gavrilov.

Goldberg Variations Main Performer
or Conductor: Andrei Gavrilov Instrumentation: Piano Individual Works: Goldberg Variations, BWV Format: Compact Disc Record Label: Deutsche Grammophon Catalog Number: 435 436-2 GH Year Released/Recorded: Total Playing Time: Comments: Sam Lee said: I think that Andrei plays this with much feeling but not over indulging. This is the most interesting and lively recording I have ever heard Freddie Sng said: 4D Audio recording is a new concept in sound recording from DG. It promises to enhance clarity and realism in its recording. It is most fortunate that DG has released Bach's Goldberg Variations in 4D digital
sound, played by the Russian pianist Andrei Gavrilov. His rendition of Bach is most energetic and vivacious, exciting playing from the begining to the end. His notes are articulated and the ornamentations are executed with ease and clarity. Like Schiff, he retains the flavour of the instrument and observes all repeats. This recording is fresh, vivid and rhythmically alert. A recommended piano version. Bart Vanden Berghe said: As a pianist this recording of the Goldberg variations has been the most influencing piano work (and recording) in my life. It's to me the most intense performance without being too romantic. Everybody should have this recording !

What makes the European atmosphere so intense? What defines the European heritage? Where can you find the roots of European culture? Guided by these questions, we document major works of European music in live-recordings at one of the most authentic cisalpean places by our Edition Monastery Maulbronn. I've tasted myself physically the perfect acoustical and architectical beauty of this performing place and the exquisite musical staging - which deeply impressed me. An editor cannot but follow his intention to preserve those cultural values for the posterity. (Josef Stefan Kindler) The concerts at the Monastery Maulbronn
The concerts at the monastery Maulbronn are performed since 1968 and offer in the meantime a programme, which has not only international continuance, but also stands the comparison with bigger stages in the world. The performances take place between may and september in the historical rooms of the monastery (church, layical refectory, cloister garden). There are about 25 concerts annually. We publish a selection of the most beautiful works of religious and secular music by our edition. The monastery Maulbronn
„The also in the question of sound excellent recording supports an interesting and notable variant on the recordings of Harnoncourt, Gardiner, Marriner and Creed...“ (Dr. Karl-Georg Berg about "Jephtha"/ Die Rheinpfalz)

I see that you have no recording of Rach's Variations on a Theme of Corelli. Have you heard it? Would you rate Alicia deLarrocha and Ruth Laredo in your list of Good and Bad? Very nice website and informative. By the way! I have a snippet of piano music which no one can seem to identify. I recorded it from a classical radio station in 1980. Then it gathered dust. Recently, I sent a tape copy of it to the station nd they are a blank. Same for Capital University here in Columbus OH. Want to try? What's your mailing address? I'll send it. I want to buy the complete recording. Thanks. Dhruva Seshadri My Email: dhrugeese@myrealbox.com
