World Concert Artist Directory Andrei Gavrilov Piano Andrei Gavrilov was born in Moscow in 1955. He won first prize in the 1974 International Tchaikovsky Competition and in the same year made a triumphant international debut at the Salzburg Festival. He has subsequently enjoyed a distinguished international career which has included performances with many of the world's greatest orchestras. Andrei Gavrilov made his London debut in 1976 with Paavo Berglund and the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra in the Royal Festival Hall. In 1978 he performed with the Berlin Philharmonic in a major European concert tour. By 1980 he had performed in all the major cultural centres in the world. Andrei Gavrilov made a triumphant return to the British concert platform in 1984, after a politically enforced absence, giving recitals at the Barbican and the Royal Festival Hall. He successfully petitioned Mikhail Gorbachev for his freedom, and became the first Soviet artist to be granted permission to stay in the West without having to file for political asylum. Following his Carnegie Hall debut in 1985, Andrei Gavrilov was proclaimed as a major artist by the New York Times' Donal Henahan. He has since performed with orchestras in New York, Chicago, Philadelphia and Montreal, London, Vienna, Paris, Berlin, Munich, Amsterdam and Tokyo, with conductors including Abbado, Haitink, Muti, Ozawa, Svetlanov and Tennstedt. Recent engagements include recitals in Warsaw, San Sebastian, Bilbao, Rome, Tallinn, Athens and Lisbon.

A little over two years have passed since Andrei Gavrilov, 1974 winner of the Tchaikovsky Competition, came to the West on a concert tour after a six-year hiatus. Following the invasion of Afghanistan in 1979, the Russian pianist was not allowed to appear outside his native land except for occasional forays to make recordings. In the relatively short time since his reemergence in the West in March 1985, Gavrilov has performed in Britain, West Germany, France, Italy, Switzerland, the United States, Japan, Canada, and other countries as well. He has taken part in some of the most prestigious summer festivals, such as the Salzburg and Ravinia '85 festivals, to name just two. New York Times music critic Donal Henahan wrote after Gavrilov's Carnegie Hall debut on April 28, 1985: "Was Mr. Gavrilov worth the wait? Decidedly yes....He...is a major artist of a special type."

Pianist Andrei Gavrilov A native of Moscow, Andrei Gavrilov is another of that group of pianists who were trained under the Soviet system but flourished outside it. His earliest musical instruction was from his mother, though he later studied with the legendary Lev Naumov. After winning the Tchaikovsky Competition in 1974, he set out on an international career that won him many plaudits. However, in 1979 Soviet authorities barred him from traveling. Five years later he petitioned Mikhail Gorbachev and became the first Soviet artist to be granted permission to stay in the West without having to file for political asylum. He has had an active career since. He is sometimes criticized for an aggressive style, but Rachmaninoff's Third Piano Concerto, which he will play with the DSO in Munich, is a specialty that has earned him much praise.
