EDWIN FISCHER Public Performances and Broadcasts, 1943-1953
The program essay by Farhan Malik that accompanies these six discs (for the price of four) states straightaway that "the 1880s saw the birth of three pianists who were to become indelibly associated with the core German piano literature: Wilhelm Backhaus (1882), Artur Schnabel (1884) and Edwin Fischer, who was born in Basel [Switzerland] on 6 October 1886." No mention, though, of their stellar colleague, Artur Rubinstein seven months older than Fischer - who was one of of the great"Chopianists" of all time, yet played much of the same repertoire, often as well and sometimes better. The lone exception in his case was Bach der Vater, but then neither Backhaus nor Schnabel were Bach-specialists. The Cantor of Leipzig was Fischer's specialty, both as a pianist and as a conductor, here of the Lausanne Chamber Orchestra. But this is 19th-century Bach, be cautioned, on a grand piano, recurringly with a heavy touch and sometimes a sobriety verging on didacticism. Fischer also led the Berlin Philharmonic in a 1943 performance of Beethoven's C major Concerto (officially No. 1, actually No. 2) but disfigured it with his outrÈ After the war, on a distinguished but short-lived series of HMV LPs issued in the U.S. by RCA, Fischer was soloist in a powerfully solemn "Emperor" Concerto with Furtw”ngler and the Philharmonia Orchestra, as well as soloist on two LPs of Mozart Concertos conducting "his" orchestra: Nos, 17, 20, 22, 24 and 25. There were also Schubert's

BEETHOVEN: PIANO CONCERTO NO. 5, PIANO SONATAS NOS. 8 AND 23
(EMI)
This 1952 recording of Beethoven’s Emperor The sonatas that fill out the CD are not quite on the same transcendental level. That magically warm sound is the principal attraction, and there’s some transparent playing in the Appassionata that’s a far cry from the hellbent virtuosity one expects in this work. But there are also numerous finger slips, and Fischer seems less sure of the structure, especially in the early . These performances are never less than involving, though, and they provide decent filler for what should be considered absolutely essential Beethoven listening.

Paul Badura-Skoda is one of the most important pianists of our time: a legendary artist who has played in all the world's greatest concert halls and for years the pianist with the largest number of commercial recordings available in the market. His musical personality is characterized by complete immersion in music, a passionate search for its essence, and a sense of artistic responsibility.
In 1945 Badura-Skoda entered the Vienna Conservatory and two years later won first prize in the Austrian Music Competition and a scholarship which allowed him to study with Edwin Fischer. These years laid the foundation for Badura-Skoda's artistic future. In 1949 Wilhelm Furtwängler and Herbert von Karajan became aware of Badura-Skoda's outstanding talent and invited him to perform. Practically overnight the young Viennese pianist became a world-famous artist. Since then Badura-Skoda has been a regular and celebrated guest at the most important music festivals and a soloist with the world's most prestigious orchestras. In addition to Furtwängler and von Karajan, he has collaborated with such renowned conductors as George Szell, Karl Böhm, Zubin Mehta, Sir Georg Solti, and Lorin Maazel, among others.

  • So a composite video such as this one is for me a veritable treasure trove, a true legacy of a large proportion of the great piano playing of the 20 th th . The video available for purchase is narrated by John Tusa, but the same program as seen on PBS several months ago was narrated by John Rubinstein, son of Arthur. I was told by the producers that since the film involved many studios from many countries, the video exists with various narrations in different languages. The small booklet enclosed with the video has a text that follows to a large extent the line of the film; it has been translated into English from an article in French.
There are also commentaries by a number of pianists, conductors and managers, including Piotr Anderszewski, Daniel Barenboim, and Colin Davis. Some of these are enormously sympathetic, such as Anderszewski, or very insightful, such as Daniel Barenboim, who describes each artist in a particularly characteristic way. Cortot, for example, he describes as follows: "I think Cortot looked for the opium in music. He looked for anything that was extraordinary; he always looked for something, not sickly, but something abnormal, totally removed from reality, and far from anything that could be construed as smelling of normality."

Principal Emeritus, Victoria Conservatory of Music
    VCM Home
Although he used to boast, I've never worked a day in my life , Robin Wood accomplished more professionally and personally than most people ever dream of.
A consummate pianist, an inspiring and compassionate teacher, and a globe-trotting adjudicator, he was also a perceptive mentor and the kindest of friends. In his four decades at the Victoria Conservatory of Music, he embodied the best that the Conservatory aspires to: high musical standards, along with a deep commitment to encouraging students to grow as both musicians and as persons.
Robin Wood was loved and respected, not only for his immense skill as a musician and his gifted teaching, but for his irrepressible sense of humour, his ability to play the violin with an orange, his love of cats, hockey, and Beethoven, and above all, his generous spirit.
His pupils marvelled at his ability to play any piece of music from memory. They tell affectionate stories of his cats, Boris and Dolce, of his fascination with computers and the latest electronic gadgets, his pride in his "perfect Cantonese," his outrageous puns, and his devotion to the Vancouver Canucks. If it came to a choice between a student recital and a hockey game, he would bring his walkman to the recital and enjoy both.
To his students he dispensed nicknames, hugs, dinners out, rides home, bad jokes, and always, the music. His teaching tool-kit included scribbled caricatures of cats, hockey analogies, endless patience, laughter, the highest of standards, and the admonishment to always play from the heart.
