(including all items announced in record catalogues but never released and an appendix of LPs published under pseudonyms) compiled by Ernst A. Lumpe Preface T he Italian pianist Sergio Fiorentino was born in Naples on December 22, 1927. His exceptional talent showed at an early age. Being granted a scholarship by the Ministery of Education in 1938, he studied at the Conservatorio "San Pietro a Majella" under Luigi Finizio and Paolo Denza, earning his diploma in 1946. In 1948 he attended a master class of Carlo Zecchi in Salzburg. By that time he had already begun his career as a solo and trio player in his native country, and had won several national and international piano competitions.
H
A
new start was made in the late fifties in England. He played frequently in Wigmore Hall and Royal Festival Hall in London and in other cities in Britain. The London Philharmonic, London Symphony and Philharmonia Orchestras accompanied him in performances of works by Mozart, Beethoven, Tchaikovsky, Rachmaninoff, de Falla and Gershwin. Most of his recordings were made during those years. V arious circumstances, among these a growing unease with the strenuous life of being an itinerant musician and teacher simultaneously, prompted him to withdraw again from an extensive concert life. He limited his rare appearances in public to his native country and started to give regular master classes, working also occasionally for Italian radio RAI.

Vladimir Horowitz
(during a conversation with Italian pianist Rodolfo Caporali in his home in New York City in 1963)
T hese short statements by two pianists, considered by many as belonging to the league of the very greatest, will come as a major surprise to all those interested in the art of playing the piano. One can safely assume that both men did know what they were talking about. Contrary to their knowledge, until recent years, the name of Sergio Fiorentino was virtually unknown to a wider public. After tremendous success on concert stages of many European countries and through appearances in New York City and in South America in the late forties and early fifties, a chain of events caused Fiorentino to retreat from international concert life, dedicating most of his time to teaching at the Conservatory "San Pietro a Majella" in his native city and giving only the occasional concert and radio appearance in Italy.

Concert Artist/Fidelio Recordings Royston, Hertfordshire, SG8 7EG, England Featured Artists Sergio Fiorentino Born in Naples on December 22nd 1927 Sergio Fiorentino showed an early talent for the piano. He was barely 11 years of age when he was awarded a scholarship and entered the San Pietro a Majella Conservatoire in 1938 and was placed under the guidance of Luigi Finizio and Paolo Denza. He was awarded his diploma in 1946. He repaid those who had shown such confidence in his prodigious talent by winning first prizes in every European Piano Competition of note before he was barely twenty years old! During those years as a student he developed a significant and remarkable affinity for the music of Rachmaninov. In 1947 he played the composers third piano concerto for the first time and he retained a firm affection for the work throughout his life. In fact he chose to play the concerto in a series of orchestral concerts in Germany not many months before he died. Fiorentino was one of the few top-ranking pianists to play the complete works of the great Russian composer and maintain them in his constant performing repertoire. In 1987 he gave a series of recitals in which he played Rachmaninov’s complete piano works in four programmes spread over a few days.

CONCERT ARTIST CACD 9201-2
I recently reviewed the latest release in APR’s Fiorentino series, a finely controlled and deeply poetic Liszt recital to which I would direct readers interested in this still contentious musician. Concert Artist/Fidelio Recordings, who recorded much of Fiorentino in the 1950s and 1960s and whose devotion to him was notable has now released a sheaf of his recordings, newly remastered, some live, several from newly discovered master tapes, many previously unissued, to increase yet further ones knowledge and experience of the young pianist – he was twenty seven when he set down this set of the awesome Transcendental Etudes. In fact going through the catalogues I haven’t been able to discover an earlier complete set than this February 1955 traversal – with the caveat that it was never issued at the time. The Etudes were recorded the day after his London debut, at Wigmore Hall, and the masters then sent to America where they were stored and subsequently believed to be lost. I believe that a selection of them, Nos 3, 4, 5, 6, 10 and 11 was announced for issue, on Concert Artist CALP 1062, and is so listed in a supplementary volume of The World’s Encyclopaedia of Recorded Music. Many years later, in 1966 Fiorentino was recording for Concert Artist in Guildford and warmed up with some of the Etudes – these performances were recorded and some patching has been done using these performances to cover the storage damage to the original tapes.

A series of discs displayed remarkable qualities in a musician whose public profile was deliberately circumscribed – he was Professor of Piano at the Naples Conservatoire from 1974-93, playing concerts only intermittently. Fiorentino had made his American debut in 1953 and his career, despite devastating injuries sustained in a 1954 plane crash, was to flourish in the 1960s, precisely the time he made these Concert Artist LPs. As Justin Thyme’s notes make clear the trajectory of the career meant that Fiorentino was much less well known than his status deserved and this continuing series has triumphantly succeeded in bringing his name to wide attention.

Two popular traditions that continued in 1998 were the midnight concerts at Marble House and the concert cruises on Narragansett Bay with champagne brunch. The cruises included a program of popular songs by Cantus and a piano program of Chopin. The midnight concerts featured five offerings, including Haydn's chamber masterpiece "The Last Seven Words," Schubert's "Die schone Magelone," Schubert/Liszt's "Schwanengesang," and a program entitled "Midnight Melodrama," featuring Richard Strauss' "Enoch Arden." The 250th anniversary of the Redwood Library, America's first library, was celebrated in a special concert at this year's Festival. 29TH NEWPORT MUSIC FESTIVAL
HAILED AS "BANNER YEAR"
he 1997 Newport Music Festival celebrated its 29th season last summer, continuing its tradition of unique chamber music programs, American debuts, world class artists and special events in the grand "summer cottages" of Newport, RI. Having begun his 23rd season, General Director Dr. Mark P. Malkovich, III re-searched and selected works from the 19th century chamber music, vocal repertoire and the Romantic era piano literature to create what critics have described as "concerts built around ingenious themes" (New York Magazine), "a magnificent summer event" (Newport This Week), and "the most elegant and pleasurable event of its type in North America" (American Record Guide). Continuing its support as major Festival sponsor, Yamaha provided a number of CFIIIS concert grand pianos Disklaviers ® and rehearsal instruments for the series of 57 concerts spread over the two week period-described by Malkovich as "keyboards from heaven!" Among the highlights of the 1997 season program were 16 afternoon programs devoted to the complete chamber music, piano works and songs of Beethoven. The
