From the very beginning, the uncouth young genius from northern Germany had the Viennese aristocracy eating out of his hand, compelling their admiration with his blazing keyboard skills and his utterly original gifts as a composer. Beethoven was at his most innovative and engaging when writing for the piano. He was particularly fascinated by the challenge of sonata form, and throughout the course of his life he took the sonata in directions old Haydn had never dreamt of. Indeed, the F-major Sonata , like Beethoven’s other early piano music, bears the unmistakable imprint of a young composer experimenting boldly with form and language, one who had already found his own distinctive voice. Although the buoyancy and graceful charm of this music, with its occasional flickers of mischief, is enjoyable on its own terms, it is also a poignant reminder that Beethoven was not always the irascible, tormented soul he came to be later in life.

Mount Allison's Independent Student Journal Online Arts and Literature Back to contents file photo The Nova Scotia Symphony Orchestra Last Thursday evening , Sackville music lovers were treated to a wonderful program of Brahms and Beethoven on the first concert of what promises to be an exciting Performing Arts Series. Featured artists for the recent concert included native Montreal pianist Janina Fialkowska, Symphony Nova Scotia, under the baton of Simon Streatfield, and guest concertmaster Isabelle Fournier, who joined us from England, where she is a member of the illustrious St. Martin-in-the-Fields Orchestra. (Ms. Fournier, who is from Moncton, undoubtedly brought back many pleasant musical memories to many local residents who remembered her.) The program consisted of only two works, but what works those were: in the first half, Brahms' Piano Concerto in d minor, Op. 15, and in the second, Beethoven's Symphony No. 7 in A major, Op. 92! The Brahms concerto, a work in three movements or sections, is a monumental pillar of the keyboard-and-orchestra literature. The first movement, nearly twenty minutes in length, is emotionally charged, and journeys through passages of intense drama and fire as well as great awe and revelation. The second movement, a slow and reflective one, expresses beautifully feelings of intense longing and unfulfilled desire, and represents, for me, Romantic music at its best. What ends this work is an exciting and titanic gallop with fantastic rhythms, dialogue-like interactions between piano and orchestra, and dazzling displays of pianistic virtuosity.

Ottawa Citizen, Saturday, March 4, 2000 LOCAL Saturday 4 March 2000 In honour of Robertson Davies Kingston composer's memorial concerto can be heard March 12 on CBC Radio. Paul Gessell The Ottawa Citizen KINGSTON - Surely it was inevitable that Marjan Mozetich would one day compose a piano concerto in honour of Robertson Davies. "Robertson Davies gave me courage," the wiry Kingston composer says of the celebrated Canadian author who died in 1995. The story goes back to the 1970s when Mozetich was living in Toronto and growing increasingly dissatisfied with the avant-garde music in which he was immersed. Suddenly, he discovered the books of Robertson Davies. They changed his life. They certainly changed his music. Now, move ahead to 1993 when Kingston philanthropist-businessman Michael Davies, a nephew of Robertson, first heard one of Mozetich's compositions and decided he must meet the creator of such a masterpiece. Of course, Michael Davies had no clue at the time that his uncle had played such a crucial role in shaping Mozetich's music. The two met, hit it off and two years later, when Robertson Davies died, Michael Davies contacted Mozetich again and offered him a commission from the Kingston-based Davies Foundation to produce a piece of music in honour of the celebrated writer.
