Janina Fialkowska
JANINA FIALKOWSKA, Pianist Born in Montreal to a Canadian mother and a Polish father, Janina Fialkowska began piano studies at the age of five. She entered the Ecole de Musique Vincent d'Indy, Montreal and studied privately in Paris. After pursuing advanced studies at New York's Juilliard School of Music, Janina Fialkowska was a top prize winner at the First International Arthur Rubinstein Master Piano Competition in Israel. It was Rubinstein himself who brought the music of Szymanowski to her attention. In 1992, the CBC produced a sixty-minute television documentary, "The World of Janina Fialkowska," that aired to great acclaim throughout Canada. This program was awarded a Special Jury Prize at the 1992 San Francisco International Film Festival. Janina Fialkowska's discography includes works by Chopin (RCA), Liszt, Moszkowski, Chopin and Peter Paul Koprowski (CBC SM5000) and Schubert's Schwanengesang, with bass-baritone Daniel Lichti, for Opening Day Recordings (ODR 9302). Piano Six is a not-for-profit project dedicated to...

For many years Pianist Janina Fialkowksa has been a familiar presence at the Carmel Bach Festival. Her annual contribution to the Festival was a solo recital and a concerto appearance that won her the loyalty of many fans. However, in recent years the influence of concert-mistress/violinist Elizabeth Wallfisch seemed to propel Bach Festival recitals ever more firmly in the direction of period instruments, and the inevitable finally happened - the modern piano was banished from the Festival. In its place we have the modern piano's period equivalent, the "fortepiano" (the lightly strung precursor to the modern Steinway) that now plays a small, subordinate role in the Festival.
Therefore, to the delight of her fans Janina Fialkowska returned for a recital engagement on Sunday afternoon, October 4th at Sunset Center in Carmel. This event was a fundraiser for the Carmel Bach Festival and was presented as one of the events of the Carmel Performing Arts Festival that dominates the month of October on the Monterey Peninsula. The fact that there were other Festival events taking place during the weekend may explain why only a small audience of approximately 200 people attended the concert.

"Hello, Guinness Book of Records, I think we have a new speed record for a performance of classical piano music, maybe even faster than Volodos." This event took place on Saturday, January 6, at Sunset Center in Carmel, and was a piano recital by perennial Carmel Bach Festival favorite, Janina Fialkowska.
Celebrating the first concert event on the Monterey Peninsula of the new millennium (the true one, not the much heralded fizzle that gave us all a Y2K scare a year ago), this concert was a part of the Bach Festival's off-season series called Bravissima that has been providing an interesting group of concerts at Sunset Center in Carmel. Navigating her way through a challenging program, Ms. Fialkowska began with the Bach Partita No. 1 in B-flat Major, and to this well-known work she brought her own robust, high velocity style of piano playing. The slower sections of the Partita, the

Welcome back, Janina. On a rational level, I had understood the extraordinary musical-medical odyssey that led Janina Fialkowska to the stage of the George Weston Recital Hall on Thursday night – the virtuoso pianist’s discovery of an aggressive tumour on her upper left arm two years ago; radiation; surgery that left her unable to raise that arm to the keyboard; reconstructive surgery nine months later that rerouted a rarely-used muscle from her upper back into the arm; endless physiotherapy; a triumphant “try-out” recital in Germany before an invited audience, and finally, on Thursday, her first professional performance with two hands since the ordeal began.

I t was business as usual when pianist Janina Fialkowska walked onto the stage of the George Weston Recital Hall in Toronto a few months ago and played the serene G-major chords that open Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 4 But business as usual, for Fialkowska, is a very fine thing. The flowing musicality, emotional generosity and spontaneity of her playing have earned the Montreal-born pianist the affection of audiences around the world. And after the finale of the Beethoven romped to its conclusionFialkowska having brought out the Slavic soul of the dancethe pianist acknowledged the huge ovation with her usual "aw shucks" humility, as if surprised to find herself the centre of attention. Fialkowska is one of the few female pianists associated with the top-flight virtuoso repertoire of Chopin, Liszt, Szymanowsky, and so on. Despite this she hasn't always had the recognition that she deserves. It was scandalous, for instance, that her poetic 1997 recording of the complete Chopin Études (on Opening Day Records), brimming with subtlety and imagination, wasn't even nominated for a Juno. And the poetry that she brings out in Liszt convinces even those of us who can't bear the composer that there's more than machismo and histrionics in even his flashiest works.

(music critic, The Gazette, Montreal) Past: Were there pianists of substance before Glenn Gould? The discography is silent on this subject. There were some prodigiesEllen Ballon in Montreal and Mona Bates in Torontowho turned into patrons or pedagogues. André Mathieu, alas, became a drunk. It is interesting to note that the multi talented Sir Ernest MacMillan, who trained as an organist and busied himself mainly as a conductor, visited Rudolf Serkin in Vermont and was told by the master that he played piano "like a very good pianist who hasn't kept up his practice." Still, Gould is obviously in a league of his own. I like his interpretations of Scriabin, which sound emotionally spontaneous as well as brilliant in the usual Gould ways.
