Ronald E. Moore
Composer and Poet
Moore's first recordings were of a different nature from the refined classical style which graces his current work. Back in the early '60s, he had a number one rock'n'roll hit and several other popular tunes, such as When the Dance is Over, Your Turn to Cry, When you Lose your Love and others. In those days, he thrilled audiences by playing piano, guitar, tenor sax and upright bass by turn while he sang. When away from the piano, Moore is a health care executive , serves on numerous business and non-profit boards and is a human rights activist involved in Amnesty International International Campaign for Tibet Texas Christian University and other venues.

Pianist Angelina Gadeliya is the first of six winners of the Oberlin Concerto Competition to be featured in Con Portraits this year. She recently performed Beethoven's Concerto No. 4 with the Oberlin Chamber Orchestra in Finney Chapel.
Angelina Gadeliya, 22, calls Colorado Springs, Colorado, home. When she visits her family, she often joins her four younger sisters for impromptu concerts. But her first home was the town where she was born, Sukhumi, Georgia, and where she began piano lessons, at the age of six, with Alla Golovco. When she was seven, her family moved to the Ukraine, and she continued her lessons with Elena Chebrova until her family immigrated to the United States in 1990. The Gadeliyas settled first in South Dakota, and Angelina began piano studies with Arlene Krueger. Now, in her senior year at Oberlin, she studies with Associate Professor of Piano Angela Cheng. The two have worked together for five years; Angelina followed Cheng to Oberlin from the University of Colorado in 1998.

American-born pianist Christine Menedis has been heralded as possessing "an all-encompassing technique, musical perception, individuality and a security that projects to the audience." Recent engagements have included an invitation by Steinway to perform for former President Jimmy Carter in his hometown of Americus, GA., as well as performances in Florida, Massachusetts, South Carolina, Georgia, New York, and Texas. In 1999, she performed with the Fort Worth Chamber Orchestra, under the baton of Leon Fleisher. The Fort Worth Star Telegram reported that Beethoven's music "flowed like honey." Recent performances at summer festivals include the Meadowmount School of Music, Pianofest in the Hamptons, the TCU/Van Cliburn Institute, and the Académie Internationale d'Été de Nice. Menedis gave her first solo performance in North Carolina at the age of seven, and has since performed throughout the United States. She made her international debut, in March 1997 appearing with the Orquesta Sinfonica del Valle in Cali, Colombia under the direction of Germán Gutiérrez. Menedis attended the North Carolina School of the Arts, and upon her graduation from high-school at age 15 was the youngest person ever accepted into the Texas Christian University Artist Diploma Program. Graduating in only 18 months, she received her Diploma in piano performance in 1998. At TCU, Christine studied under Mr. Jose Feghali, Artist-in-Residence, and gold medallist of the 1985 Van Cliburn International Piano Competition.

UH President Evan Dobelle will be one of seven judges who pick the next Miss America. Advertiser library photo So he sought out Hawai'i's own 2001 Miss America, Angela Baraquio, for advice and she convinced him it was a worthwhile American institution that touches the lives of thousands of women every year while offering more than $40 million annually in college scholarships. Baraquio won $100,000 in scholarships over three years in the Miss America and preliminary pageants, enabling her to pay off college loans.

during the preliminary round
Arriving in Fort Worth, Texas after a week of listening via Internet to the Eleventh Van Cliburn International Piano Competition put me in mind of an old Twilight Zone the players to perform a lieder recital with a singer. “Can you imagine,” he said with a touch of urbane diffidence, “how much we could learn about the interpretive powers of the pianist compelled to collaborate in Schubert’s Schwanengesang Even from the shrewdest professional, that’s smart thinking. Still, his comments offered a foretaste of life inside one of the most extraordinary musical institutions of all time.

4 John Bell Young ON WATCH On Monday morning Roger Wright and I had breakfast at Fort Worth's Worthington Hotel with Lowell Liebermann, the distinguished composer whose work was performed at this year's contest. He told us something rather interesting, which the Cliburn has not disclosed fully. This year the Cliburn, in its customary effort to include a contemporary work, held an invitational competition for composers. More than 30 of them contributed a work for consideration for performance at the competition. Out of some 32 anonymous submissions (the names of the composers were, for a time, kept anonymous), only a few were successful. One of them was Liebermann, whose Three Impromptus proved a most effective and haunting work. In any case, the work was not commissioned by the competition. In fact, the participating composers were asked to submit any work, even if already published, providing only that it had not been awarded a prize previously. The Cliburn awarded the winning entries cash prizes Lowell's was the most frequently performed, so he won the grand prize of $5000. Of course, it is odd, and potentially unfair that the Cliburn competition would have sanctioned a published work; as Lowell pointed out, he could just as easily have submitted
