Written for piano soloist, six boy sopranos and full orchestra, Aporias is John Zorn's most accomplished composition to date. Performed in Cologne, Vienna and at Carnegie Hall, this monumental piece, part piano concerto, part Requiem has been universally hailed by performers, composers and audience alike as a new vision of modern orchestral music. Performed here by pianist Stephen Drury, the Hungarian Radio Children's Choir and the American Composers Orchestra under the direction of Dennis Russell Davies, this premiere recording made under the supervision of the composer is an exhilarating experience filled with subtle detail, unusual instrumental colors and emotional power. http://www.racheljimenez.com/bio.php
:: Biography :: Like many other pianists, I began taking piano lessons at the ideal age of five. Today, I particularly enjoy playing new music that is often unfamiliar to audiences. However, I find equal fulfillment in studying and performing the music of the traditional masters. It is an endeavor which I approach with respect and wonder. I am also very passionate about teaching the piano to others. I've found that it requires more than just the ability to play well; it requires a sensitivity to seeing the potential in a student and then using my training, skills, and instinct to bring out the best within them. I have devoted many years to this effort, and many of the lessons I teach are taught with piano material that I have developed myself and refined over the years. I find genuine enjoyment in teaching the valuable concepts that I have learned from others and also in finding new ways to communicate them. I'm fortunate to have been taught by some great artists. Stephen Drury of the New England Conservatory is one person who has shaped my playing immensely. He helped me to polish my technique a great deal, and I credit my interest in new music entirely to his influence. After graduating from NEC with two piano performance degrees, both with distinction, I went on to get a master's degree in piano performance at Yale University. Boris Berman was my principle instructor there, and it was while in his studio that I studied some repertoire that I had wanted to play for many years. The music of Prokofiev is a particular specialty of Prof. Berman's, and studying the 6th sonata with him was an opportunity I could not pass up. I am a better pianist today because of the time I spent at Yale. Berman's proficiency at teaching the art of the piano helped me to focus and capitalize on my distinctive strengths.

Best concert
For the first time since I started doing year-end Top 10 lists, Seiji Ozawa and the BSO top the 10, with a program consisting of the overture to one children's opera (Humperdinck's ) and an entire children's opera (Ravel's ) surrounding a work of spiritual and artistic maturity (Mahler's five
Most welcome guest
Music for Strings, Percussion, and Celesta (outclassing Ozawa on his own musical turf), Brahms First Piano Concerto in an extraordinary collaboration with the elegant (but astounding) Krystian Zimerman), and symphonies by Bruckner and Haydn might have topped the Top 10 in any other year.
Best choral event
Craig Smith's Emmanuel Music the Boston group most dedicated to Bach waited for its 25th anniversary to do the greatest of all choral works, Bach's St. Matthew Passion . Smith's flexible and heartfelt conducting, the amazing orchestral ensemble (with notable solo playing by concertmaster Danielle Madden and oboist Peggy Pearson), the magnificent chorus, and especially thrilling performances by young Stephen Salters, Frank Kelley, and the glowing Sanford Sylvan as Jesus made it all worth the wait.
Best opera production
Stephen Wadsworth's bourgeois-tization of Handel's heroic Xerxes (Boston Lyric Opera) may not have been the most profound realization of the score, but Lorraine Hunt's singing and Craig Smith's conducting certainly were, and countertenor David Daniels made another outstanding impression. In production values, this handsome borrowed production also rose above the checkered record of our only continuing opera company.

by Lloyd Schwartz
Main event. "The future isn't what it used to be," composer Elliott Carter quipped to a benefit audience for the Boston Musica Viva at a superb concert of his music a few weeks before his 92nd birthday, which fell on December 11. At least as far as Carter is concerned, we have a long past to be grateful for. Not to mention a recent past. He's been working like a dynamo, and his latest pieces are among his most exciting and youthful. His first opera, What Next? , had its first American performances in Chicago and New York this millennial year, and one of the great events of 2000 was this past summer's Festival of Contemporary Music at Tanglewood, at which Carter was composer in residence. The BSO played its first performance in 36 years of Carter's seminal Variations for Orchestra , under the illuminating baton of Robert Spano. And there were a number of American premieres played by the Tanglewood fellows, especially a dazzling and moving new chamber-orchestra piece called the ASKO Concerto that was led by Stefan Asbury.

UNIVERSITY OF SOUTHAMPTON
Example 1
shows the opening of the American composer John Zorn's Carny for solo piano, written in 1989 for the American pianist Stephen Drury, and revised on 'Tue, Feb 6, 1996', as the bottom left-hand corner of the first page reveals. FN It is this feature of the piece which poses a challenge to ideologies of the musical work, and techniques of analysis and close-reading. Carny 's fragmentation subverts conventional notions of individual authorship. Bars 13-19 in Example 1 (from the last bar on the first page) have been described by Stephen Drury in an article in Perspectives of New Music as 'a jazzy dominant ninth chord [bar 13]... through a bebop phrase (coloured with Xenakis) [bar 18] into out-and-out cocktail music at bar 19'. Carny FN If defining Zorn as the individual author of Carny is problematic, it is also debatable whether the piece can be characterized as an individual or autonomous entity. Derived from (not to say parasitic upon) many other kinds of music and the work of many different composers, Carny appears to be a collection of fragments rather than a single 'work', and seems to be wilfully subversive of the ideals of the monolithic masterpiece. So if Zorn's creative ego is shattered into so many shards by his creative practices in

** Ugly Beauty
SWEETNESS
(Atlantic)
The NYC-based trio Ugly Beauty, who feature former Cell guitarist Jerry DiRenzo, are still in the process of discovering their own sound on Sweetness, their debut for Atlantic. Their goal seems to be a kind of organic, fluid, jangly rock with a dream-pop center, something they achieve on "The Only Heroine." Elsewhere, singer Christy Schnabel's voice is the group's defining feature, and it wanders from sexy Debbie Harry belting ("Bring Me Flowers") to heavy, narcotic refrains ("Seven Days") to an almost giddy B-52's-like chorus on "Endless Stream." She pours out vain, bittersweet lyrics with an authority alluring enough to make you forgive Ugly Beauty's growing pains, which amount to getting stuck too often in the mid-tempo doldrums and never really settling into a style they can call their own. Sweetness is a promising enough introduction to a band who seem to be on the right path. Cathy Miner

Hard to tell whether former Guided by Voices guy Tobin Sprout just got tired of being second in command to Robert Pollard or whether newborn twins had something to do with his departure from the best damn Merseybeat group ever to come out of Dayton, Ohio. Epic Music, Powerhouse Pianism By Sarah Cahill
If Thomas Schultz had advertised his concert on Friday
night as "protest music," he would have packed Old First
Church to the rafters. And he wouldn't have been
deceiving anyone. Activists, radicals, and any
politically-minded person would have found satisfaction
and even a cathartic release in Schultz's ingenious
program combining Yuji Takahashi's Kwangju, May
1980, about the horrific oppression of an uprising in the
South Korean city, and Frederic Rzewski's The People
United Will Never Be Defeated, 36 variations on a Chilean anthem from the Allende regime. But Schultz just isn't the kind of pianist who markets the music or himself. Like many pianists in the Bay Area, he often attracts larger audiences in New York or Seoul or Berlin than he does in his own home town.
