Friday May 2nd, 2003 Baldwin artist Dick Hyman covers all the stylistic bases and fan bases, too Baldwin artist Dick Hyman moves easily between George W. Bush's White House and Woody Allen's film studio. Both "W"'s are fans of the busy pianist, organist, educator, arranger, conductor and composer. Hyman has performed by invitation of the President and served as composer/arranger/conductor/pianist for the Woody Allen films Zelig The Purple Rose Of Cairo Broadway Danny Rose Stardust Memories Hannah and Her Sisters Radio Days , and most recently, Bullets Over Broadway and Mighty Aphrodite Count Garrison Keillor's Prairie Home Comapanion radio broadcasts as another venue for Hyman as well as numerous "gigs" around the world including his long-running Jazz in July series of summer concerts and master classes at New York City's 92nd Street Y. Hyman also has recorded more than 100 albums under his own name and many more with other artists. Says noted writer Bill Zinsser, "Computerized in Hyman's brain, instantly transferable to his fingers, is every popular piano and organ style that has ever been played in America, historically correct to the year when it was in vogue. He can also replicate note for note, the style of all the American giants of jazz piano in this century, from the intricate rags of Eubie and the galloping stride of James P. Johnson to the urgent bebop of Bud Powell and the introspective lyricism of Bill Evans." The culmination of Hyman's fifty years of study and performance is the interactive CD-ROM

Pianist Wally Rose was one of three sons born to Janet Pecansu and Manuel Rodrigues (The family changed its name to Rose before Wally's birth). He was born at home in Oakland, California, October 2, 1913. His parents were of Portuguese descent and natives of Hawaii, so the Rose family sailed to Honolulu many times during his childhood. Rose attended the first through third grades in Honolulu before settling with his family in San Francisco. His family's home was on the southwest corner of 20th and Diamond Streets in the Eureka Valley, not far from the schools of Mission Dolores and Most Holy Redeemer Church, which he also attended. Mr. Rose always gave credit to his mother for the encouragement to learn the piano. After attending Oakland's Lockwood Junior High School, Rose attended Castlemont High School. He first studied piano with Miss Alice Eggers, a distinguished music teacher at Castlemont High School. In the 1930s piano studies were continued with Miss Elizabeth Simpson, who had studios in Berkeley and San Francisco. After graduation from Castlemont High School he played in dance bands aboard ships around the world in the early 1930s, including a sea-

Hyman explores Thelonious Monk's (1917-1982) strange rhythms and challenging harmonies, which ushered in a revolution that forever changed the sound of jazz. The concert also features the music of Monk's contemporaries and students, including Dizzy Gillespie, Charlie Parker and Bud Powell. Guest pianist Barry Harris
was a close friend of Monk, and his style is often compared to the late bebop legend. Harris was asked to play the Monk segment on Columbia's 1978 "I Remember Bebop" album, and is one of the key links to Monk's legacy. Another Monk aficionado is pianist Ted Rosenthal , who has studied Monk and recorded his works extensively. One of Rosenthal's early claims to fame was his first-prize win at the Second Annual Thelonious Monk International Jazz Piano Competition 1998. Pianists

... Other Sites of Interest Ralph Ellison: Poet of Democratic Excellence
On Principle June 1996 by: James Seaton The publication of The Collected Essays of Ralph Ellison (with a preface by Saul Bellow, Modern Library) recalls the author of Invisible Man as one of the pre-eminent essayists of our time, and, furthermore, as author of some of the most searching reflections available on the implications of political democracy for culture. Today many argue that true democracy requires the leveling of hierarchies in culture as well as in society. The very notion of "literature" is rejected as inherently undemocratic and probably phallocentric. In his two earlier collections, Shadow and Act and Going to the Territory , (both included in The Collected Essays ) as well as in the other essays and addresses, some previously unpublished and collected in this volume for the first time, Ellison makes the case that high standards of artistic excellence are central to a truly democratic culture. Ellison’s affirmation of the importance of the "sacred documents" for writers in particular responds to Henry James’s famous lament about the difficulties that the lack of traditions and social hierarchies in American life presents for the novelist. Ellison argues that if life in the United States lacks the continuity and social coherence dramatized in European fiction, we have something else: "The moral imperatives of American life that are implicit in the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution and the Bill of Rights...form the ground of assumptions upon which our social values rest...they provide the broadest frame of reference for our most private dramas."
