I was intrigued by Deborah Tannen's column in the Post Outlook section (January 5) on the rapid pace at which the younger generation are speaking, and the surfacing of this characteristic on television as well. A few years ago, a listener wrote me that one could compose a movement of a symphony between my pauses. (The listener attributed this comment to a friend of his, but I knew better.) Of course, the kind of rapid patter that Dr. Tannen is noting is not a desirable goal, but I'm wondering if others feel as this one listener did: Do I talk too slowly on the air? Clarence Williams delivered "Pretty Baby, Is It Yes Or No?" included in one of two 2-CD sets released by Timeless Records that pulls together the many Williams' sessions from this period. This particular titles, from January 1934, is on the first of these sets, Timeless CBC-056 . Famous Friends of Shawn Phillips Throughout all these years in the music business, Shawn has met and maintained friendships at different levels with many other great artists. Here are some of them. T he musician Shawn has collaborated with the most is Peter Robinson . He is a brilliant pianist, composer and arranger. They have played together on numerous Shawn Phillips albums (and tours). Today, Peter's work can be heard on TV shows, movie soundtracks, and several other artists' and groups' recordings. C omposer/Cellist Paul Buckmaster has worked a lot with Shawn also. He has arranged some of the most beautiful string orchestration on Shawn's albums. Today, Paul's work can also be heard on movie soundtracks and several other artists' and groups' recordings. S hawn gave Joni Mitchell some early guitar lessons, when she was a waitress, at the Louis Riel Coffee House, in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. She was already fairly comfortable with the instrument, but wanted to learn more about Shawn's 12 string technique, and playing in general. Shawn was booked there for almost a whole week, so they did have time to get to know each other. S hawn was invited a couple of times to Paul McCartney's and George Harrison's house. They were on a very friendly basis. Paul invited Shawn to a session, and he ended up singing background vocals on "Lovely Rita Meter Maid", and they saw each other socially many times after that, at the Moody Blues house, and various clubs around London. Shawn gave George some basic lessons on sitar, before he ever actually met Ravi Shankar. It was basically the same with John and Ritchie (Ringo). Although, Shawn never went to their houses.

His original name was Reginald Kenneth Dwight. His father was a squadron leader in the RAF, and he also played trumpet with Bob Miller and the Millermen. He left the family when Reg Dwight was a teenager. Reg Dwight started playing the piano at the age of four. He studied at the Royal Academy of Music. In 1961, at the age of 14, he joined the local rhythm and blues band Bluesology. He turned professional in 1965 when the group toured the USA backing soul artists. Their first single was Come Back Baby written by Reg Dwight. The group included Elton Dean on saxaphone and Caleb Quaye on lead guitar. Long John Baldry joined the group in 1966. Reg Dwight became disatisfied with the type of work he was doing and began discussing a music publishing contract with Dick James Music. In 1967 he met Bernie Taupin, an unknown writer from Lincolnshire. They realised that they had similar musical tastes and produced, Scarecrow , their first composition together.

John Steiner John Steiner is best-known as the man who bought, operated, and later sold Paramount Records, the Wisconsin-based record company that issued more "race" records than any other company in the 1921-1932 period. More than 1,150 couplings of great jazz by Jelly Roll Morton, King Oliver, Clarence Williams, Mugsy Spanier and Frank Teschemaker, Fletcher Henderson, Johnny Dodds, Jimmy Blythe, plus blues that included all the recordings of Ma Rainey, Ida Cox, Skip James, Papa Charlie Jackson, and Charlie Spand as well as the earliest recordings of Charley Patton, Blind Lemon Jefferson, Alberta Hunter, Tampa Red, Big Bill Broonzy plus hundreds of others. There was a sizable catalog of black religious, country and pop music of that era, too. The John Steiner story goes back the twenties to a young jazz fan from Milwaukee (born July 21, 1908) working toward his Ph.D in Chemistry at the University of Wisconsin, Madison. By 1935 he was involved with Helen Oakley (Down Beat reporter and Okeh record producer) and Harry Lim (later of Keynote Records) in the formation of the country's first jazz support organization, The Hot Club of Chicago (named after the French org.). The first HCC concert presented Benny Goodman (then in his historic stand at the Congress Hotel) in a trio format with the band's drummer, Gene Krupa and a local pianist named Teddy Wilson. ARTIST BIOS Debussy String Quartet Igor Begelman Return to concert information The Debussy String Quartet Christophe Collette and Anne Menier, violins Vincent Deprecq, viola; Yannick Callier, cello The Debussy Quartet has built a reputation graced with international acclaim through their many recordings and live performances. From the Salle Moliere in Lyon, France to the Kaufman Concert Hall at the 92nd Street Y in New York City, the quartet has enlivened the chamber music world with performances of distinction: lush with detail and atmosphere, stylish, technically exciting, and musically thoughtful. Based in Lyon, France, and honored as Winners of the Evian International String Quartet Competition, the quartet perform some 80 concerts a year in Europe, Asia, and North America. Their recent U.S. tours have included concerts in Washington, DC, New York, San Diego, St. Louis, Austin, Detroit, Palm Beach and many other communities from coast to coast. They have built a special connection to the audiences at the Round Top Festival in Round Top, Texas, where they have continued their collaboration with distinguished American pianist James Dick. The group's expansive repertoire is enhanced by their special commitment to bring distinguished works of French composers to the stage and the recording studio. Through their particular acclaim for their interpretations of the Debussy and Ravel quartet, they have introduced audiences to other French works such as those of Lalo, Lekeu, and the late romantic composer Ermend Bonnal. Currently touring the quartets of Shostakovitch, all of which they have recorded for the Arion label, they also offer works of Janacek, Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven, Brahms, and more. Noted for their collaborative performances both with James Dick and with French pianist Jean-Efflam Bavouzet, the artists together offer the major piano quintet repertoire on tour as well.
