A ragtime pianist is someone with a distinct style that not only colors the way he or she plays rags, but also the way they apply that style to non-ragtime material and convert it to ragtime. Dick Zimmerman is the only pianist on this list that has a firm grasp of this concept. After You've Gone (Creamer/Layton; Art Tatum, arranger) Listen to the rhythmic patterns and the subtle half-tone modulations that only Tatum could do. Alligator Crawl (Fats Waller) The piece begins with a strong left-hand statement and then moves into a series of wonderful "Wallerisms." From the original sheet music. As Time Goes By (Herman Hupfeld; Donald Lambert, arranger) Lambert, nicknamed "Muffin," "The Lamb" and "Jersey Rocket," was a great pianist who hasn't gotten the credit he deserves for some outstanding work. P E R S P E C T I V E The Music of Benjamin Lees Winter/Spring 2003 Lees Complete Symphonies on CD - Albany Releases Important 2-CD Set Albany Music has released the most important recordings of the music of Benjamin Lees in many years - the first integral recordings of the composer's masterful Symphonies No. 2, 3 and 5 ("Kalmar Nyckel"), performed by Staatsphilharmonic Rheinland-Pfalz, conducted by the composers longtime musical interpreter and close associate, Stephen Gunzenhauser. This joins the acclaimed Naxos recording of the Symphony No. 4 "Memorial Candles", performed by mezzo Kimball Wheeler, violinist James Buswell and the National Symphony Orchestra of Ukraine, Theodore Kuchar conducting (Naxos 8.559002). The Albany Records new release catalog for February said the following about the 2-CD set, "Three symphonies and a work for piano and orchestra from one of the great American composers." J Is For James James Clarke - one of library music's unsung heroes and a man of many talents. 70s Kid focuses the spotlight on a magnificent composer who, until now has remained in the background, and speaks to him about his work. You might not be familiar with the name, but if you have seen the GAP clothing stores famous Khaki A-Go Go television adverts, or if you have caught an episode of Channel 4's current youth oriented game show Boys and Girls then you will be familiar with at least one piece of music by James Clarke. The piece in question is 'Wild Elephants', something he composed in 1973 for the Amphonic music library and originally issued on the first LP in the companies 'Moodsetter/Pacesetter' series of albums. During the 1960s, 70s and 80s he contributed many scores to the libraries of Amphonic, Bruton, Chappell, KPM, Standard and Themes International - a rich, diverse body of work that includes many glorious examples of his innate gifts for melody, harmony and arrangement. A composer blessed with a highly developed sense of beauty, elegance, colour and romance - these qualities define his work and are fundamental to his most beautiful, emotional compositions. One such example is 'Summer Dreams', written for the KPM library in 1976 - a breathtakingly gorgeous piece for orchestra and rhythm section featuring some sublime harmonies, a soaring string melody and graceful, lyrical flugelhorn and electric piano solos. Another is 'Tenderly Yours', also published by KPM, with its arcing alto flute lines and rich, colourful string writing. These pieces are wonderful showcases for the refinement, charm and good taste that are James' musical trademarks, demonstrating his light touch and mastery of orchestration.

A Tribute to Sir George Martin No one has any better claim to the title of Fifth Beatle than Sir George Martin. Without him, there would have been no Fab Four, at least as we know it. So here is a collection of information about him, including a look at some of his recording projects outside the Beatles (because everyone knows what those are, right?). Sir George, thank you! George Martin and Abbey Road George Martin first joined the Abbey Road studios in 1950. He had hopes of being a classical pianist, but abandoned those plans soon after to try and help build up the Parlophone label. It was shortly after joining the label that he met the woman soon to be his wife, the former Judith Lockhart-Smith, who was working as a secretary there. Despite the label's original emphasis on classical music, Martin cultivated work with comedians, first Peter Ustinov, and later, Peter Sellers and Spike Milligan. He branched off into jazz bands. One of the singers he recorded during this period was probably his earliest link to the Fab Four. He was young Dick James, who recorded the theme from "Robin Hood", which became a British hit in 1956. James later headed the publishing company that would handle the Beatles' early hits. In 1960, a record by Martin discovery the Temperance Seven, "You're Driving Me Crazy," became the first record Martin produced to hit number one in Britain. The Seven gave him a second top 10 record the same year.

1949 started out with a brief charter "Bouquet Of Roses" with The Troubadours (#24506), but the next three Decca record releases were huge national hits. "Roomful Of Roses" (#24632)spent five months on the top seller charts, "Maybe It's Because" (#24650) sold almost as well, and "The Old Master Painter" recorded with Sonny Burke's band on #24801. While Haymes starred on record, he also did plenty of network radio. One popular program was "Here's To Romance" with Helen Forrest for CBS, followed by The Dick Haymes Show (also called Everything For The Boys) for Autolite on both CBS and NBC from 1944-1947, The Chesterfield Supper Club for NBC, a stint on Your Hit Parade, and finally a non-singing drama called "I Fly Anything" in 1950. There were still the movie musicals such as "Carnival in Costa Rica", "One Touch of Venus", "Up in Central Park", "All Ashore" and "Cruising Down The River". Although he is now gone, Dick Haymes possessed one of the finest singing voices in the history of American popular music. Many people still marvel at that "great set of pipes" owned by Haymes. Anybody doubting his talent and appeal, just has to give a listen to "I'll Get By" recorded with Harry James on Columbia (#36698) in 1941 and released in 1944. Part One: Part Two: Becoming Turk Murphy Part Three: Mister Leader Man The school year of 1957-58, doing graduate work at Stanford, I was happy to be offered a place in trumpeter Robin Hodes' new band in San Francisco. On piano would be Don Ewell, on clarinet Bob Helm; Bill Dart would play drums, and, from the Kid Ory band, Charles Odin on string bass. After warm-up gigs in a couple of small clubs, Robin hustled us a stand at Peggy Tolk-Watkins’ Tin Angel on the Embarcadero, where I had often gone to hear bands led by Turk or Kid Ory: six nights a week, 9 to 2, union scale. For me this was the big time, for sure, with none of the grief of being leader. Hodes favored black suits, so that was our uniform: ties and jackets at all times. My only black suit would have served me well above the Arctic Circle. I began coming home from the gig three or four pounds lighter than at supper time, and had to start having the suit rush-cleaned every second or third day. Never mind, I was living the life, even if it left me comatose in morning classes. As an undergraduate I had learned to look wide-awake while brain-dead.

Havelock Jerome, the boss there, was said to have been a bookie in a previous life: he certainly gave off powerful intimations of what used to be called "the sporting world." I don’t know when he began operating the Pier, or when Burt Bales started playing solo piano there. Before long I was among those being asked to sit in. A fine band pianist, Burt loved to play with other musicians. He drank a lot, but in the years when I knew him it rarely seemed to harm his playing much. He had a drinker’s temperament: morose one minute, cheery the next, bitingly critical the one after that.
