Computerized in Hyman's brain, instantly transferable to his fingers, is every popular piano and organ style that has ever been played in America, historically correct to the year when it was in vogue. He can also replicate note for note, the style of all the American giants of jazz piano in this century. from the intricate rags of Eubie and the galloping stride of James P. Johnson to the urgent bebop of Bud Powell and the introspective lyricism of Bill Evans.

About Us Festival Hill Calendar Services ... MISSION - HISTORY - CONTACTS Concert pianist James Dick In 2003, James Dick is Texas State Musician appointee. The 1971 Festival, a ten-day session with ten piano students, included two concerts. During its first five years, the Festival-Institute leased facilities, but a master plan of development was soon established for programs and the future of the permanent campus. The first major facility, the Mary Moody Northen Pavilion, was acquired in 1973. It was the largest transportable stage in the world and was used for open-air concerts until 1983. Later, it was housed in the 1,000-seat Festival Concert Hall , on which construction began in 1981, until the permanent stage was completed in the Concert Hall in 1993. An abandoned school building and six acres of land North of Round Top were acquired in 1973 for a future campus to be named Festival Hill.

ABOUT US / MISSION HISTORY CONTACTS Located in historic Round Top, Texas, The James Dick Foundation for the Performing Arts and its sole project, The International Festival-Institute at Round Top, were founded in 1972 by world-renowned concert pianist James Dick . Begun with a handful of gifted young pianists in rented space on the town square, the project is now an internationally acclaimed European-styled music institute for aspiring young musicians and distinguished faculty. Over a thirty year period and with the help of its patrons and friends, The James Dick Foundation for the Performing Arts has developed superb year round education and performance programs. It has created also an unique 200-acre campus - Festival Hill - containing major performance facilities, historic houses, extensive gardens, parks and nature preserves. Through its singular collection of rare books, manuscripts, archival material, music and historic recordings, photographs and objects, the Festival-Institute is also known as an important center for research and scholarly study. The S targazers were a very popular vocal group on BBC radio throughout the 1950s. They could be described as novelty choralists having a style not dissimilar to the US group 'The New Christie Minstrels' of a decade later. Although the group seem to have ceased recording in about 1960, they had by then spawned other outfits that would carry the genre into the future. They will be more familiar to those of us who remember listening to radio shows like 'Take It From Here' in the mid to late 1950s, rather than those with an eye to the record charts. The EP shown here was published during 1956, but contained numbers that had been on a chart hit from almost two years previous. This is fortunate because it is very much more difficult to find "I See The Moon" on its original 45rpm single than it is on this EP. However, none of the Stargazers early material is easy to find on original vinyl- nearly all of it was sold on the 78rpm format. The Stargazers created several very successful records during the early 1950s including two #1s. These were produced with a number of different orchestras, most notably with that of Cyril Stapleton who also had close associations with BBC radio. They became the resident singers with Cyril Stapleton's Show Band- a radio programme that ran for many years from January 1953. Besides their own hits, they were also regularly used as backing singers on the records of a number of UK artists. These included Roy Smith, Dennis Lotis, Dickie Valentine, and Lita Roza.

Brackett remembers Dean made quite a stir striding through the lobby of the expensive hotel dressed in blue jeans, and carrying his bullfighter's cape slung over his shoulder. After about a week in the Windy City, Dean visited the Reverend DeWeerd for a few days at his new home in Indianapolis and paid a visit to the farm to see his aunt and uncle. Then he proceeded on his journey. In New York, Dean took a room at the Iroquois Hotel on West 44th Street, several blocks from Times Square. It was October 195 1. "New York frightened and overwhelmed me," Dean said afterward. "For the first few weeks I barely strayed from my hotel. I would see three movies a day to ease the loneliness I felt." Gradually, as his fears subsided, he began to explore the city around him.

This joins the acclaimed Naxos recording of the Symphony No. 4 "Memorial Candles", performed by mezzo Kimball Wheeler, violinist James Buswell and the National Symphony Orchestra of Ukraine, Theodore Kuchar conducting (Naxos 8.559002). The Albany Records new release catalog for February said the following about the 2-CD set, "Three symphonies and a work for piano and orchestra from one of the great American composers." It is especially appropriate that Stephen Gunzenhauser has recorded these three works, as he has been a strong advocate of Mr. Lees¹ symphonies, and it was the conductor¹s Delaware Symphony that commissioned

, later on in his career. Jackson's parents convinced him to study the violin, but after awhile, he took up the alto sax and proved more accomplished with that instrument playing Jazz. In 1944, he became part of Lucky Millinder's band working as both a vocalist and saxist. While he was still in high school, Jackson and his friend Freddie Webster, formed a band - The Harlem Hotshots, who, in 1943, enjoyed a brief stint in a Buffalo (NY) club before returning to Cleveland. At that time, Jackson caught the eye of bandleader Lucky Millinder, whose sidemen gave him the unforgettable name "Bull Moose", and the colorful monicker stuck. One night while on tour in Texas, Wynonie Harris, the scheduled singer, didn't show up. Jackson was pulled out of the sax section to croon the song "Hurry, Hurry," and a new career was born. In 1949, he had hits with "Little Girl, Don't Cry" and "Why Don't You Haul Off and Love Me" (a "cover" of Wayne Raney's hillbilly hit, a cross-fertilizing practice at King).

    b. Dec. 31, 1914, Mapperley, Nottingham, England. d. Feb. 25, 1974, England.
At age seven, Cyril began studying the violin, and, at age 12, made his first broadcast from 5NG, the local radio station in Nottingham. He was often heard on broadcasts from the BBC Studios in Birmingham, but while still very young, he went to Czechoslovakia in order to study under Sevcik, the famous Czech violin teacher. While still a teenager, he found work playing in cinema 'pit orchestras' accompanying silent films. At age 17, he won a Trinity College of Music (London) scholarship. While still a student, he found work playing in the Henry Hall Dance Band, just formed for BBC broadcasts. He was with the band on their first ever broadcast, and can be heard playing on some of Hall's early Columbia 78s recorded in 1932. At some point, Cyril left Hall and he returned to Nottingham, and again found work in the local cinemas. He next joined the Jack Payne Orchestra, and was a member when the band toured to South Africa. And, again was heard on some of Payne's 1936 Rex label recordings (78rpm). When that job ended, Cyril formed his own band in London, where he found work at The Casino (Compton Street), and also at Fisher's Restaurant (New Bond Street). In 1939, he made his very first broadcast with his own band. He also played briefly with the Jack Hylton Orchestra, under Billy Ternent.
