(basklarinet en tape) Roderik de Man Hans Otte Harry Sparnaay studeerde bij Ru Otto aan het Conservatorium van Amsterdam, waar hij het vertolkersdiploma voor klarinet behaalde. Vervolgens specialiseerde hij zich in basklarinet, en behaalde hiermee de eerste prijs bij de Internationale Gaudeamuswedstrijd. Het was de eerste keer dat met dit instrument het prestigieuze concours gewonnen werd. Vandaag de dag is hij internationaal erkend als een van de meest eminente basklarinettisten. Als solist trad hij in talloze belangrijke muziekfestivals op: o.a. Warschau, New York, Los Angeles, Zagreb, het Holland Festival, diverse ISCM Festivals, Madrid, Parijs en Athene. Daarnaast speelde hij ook op de festivals van Witten, Aarhus, Como, Bolzano, Napels, Turijn, Bourges, Middelburg, Graz, Salzburg, Huddersfield, Saarbrucken, Royan, Huston en vele andere. Sparnaay gaf koncerten en maakte plaatopnamen in gans Europa, Noord- en Zuid-Amerika, Canada, Australië, Nieuw-Zeeland en Azië, en vertolkte daarbij veelal werken die voor hem werden geschreven, of aan hem werden opgedragen. Reeds meer dan 500 komposities werden voor hem geschreven door komponisten als Claudio Ambrosini, Luciano Berio, Gerard Brophy, Paul-Heinz Dittrich, Franco Donatoni, Morton Feldman, Brian Ferneyhough, Mary Finsterer, Andrew Ford, Jonathan Harvey, Maki Ishii, Suhki Kang, Tristan Keuris, Mark Kopytman, Helmut Lachenmann, Ton de Leeuw, Theo Loevendie, Roderik de Man, Michael Smetanin, Maurice Weddington, Iannis Xenakis, Isang Yun en vele, vele anderen.

Eerder zagen we daar programma's over Sviatoslav Richter en Glenn Gould. Gisteren (26 jan 2003) was er een reportage in verband met de enerverende compositie Kleines Requiem fur eine Polka van de pool Henryk Górecki Maar ik kom over zoiets te spreken niet natuurlijk omdat ik iets zou hebben bij te dragen aan de interpretatie van de muziek of van haar betekenis voor of zelfs maar functie in het culturele leven van de eenentwintigste eeuw. Het is heel iets anders. Op zeker moment komt in een interview met de componist de vraag aan de orde: waarom bent u gaan componeren? Hij valt zowat in zwijgen. Weet nog wel te vertellen dat hij lange tijd had gedacht pianist te worden. En dat dat componeren al teruggaat tot zijn derde levensjaar, toen hij nog maar net die eerste noten kon spelen. Toen kraste hij al muziek op papier. Maar hij schijnt zich te realiseren dat zulk verhaal de vraag onbeantwoord laat. En zich te verbazen over het feit dat het antwoord niet tevoorschijn te brengen is. En dan komt er weinig meer dan: Ja, waarom...?

He regularly conducts Holland's foremost ensembles, including the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra and New Sinfonietta Amsterdam, and is involved in organizing the 'contemporaries' series at the Concertgebouw. Cuarteto Latinoamericano Cuarteto Latinoamericano was formed in Mexico in 1981 and two years later was awarded the prize of the Music Critics Association in Mexico. Since its founding, Cuarteto Latinoamericano has become a unique voice in classical music, bringing the works of Latin American composers to the world. Highlights of the quartet's recent seasons include performances in New York, Teatro alla Scala Milano, Los Angeles, Toronto, Miami, Mexico City, Paris and London. The Cuarteto Latinoamericano has been described by The Times of London as "playing of a richness, a unanimity and an instinct that surely places it in the first division of string quartets." Despite a busy concert schedule, the quartet is credited with having taught an entire generation of Mexican string players, and presently holds two residencies: at the Centro Nacional de las Artes in Mexico City, and at Pittsburgh's Carnegie Mellon University, where they are celebrating their 15th season as Quartet in Residence. In addition, the quartet teaches seminars regularly at many conservatories and universities in the USA and Latin America.
