Classical Editor: Rob Barnett Music Webmaster Len Mullenger: Len@musicweb.uk.net Galina Ustvolskaya and the Piano (Peter Grahame Woolf pays tribute to one of Russia's most creative yet little-known geniuses: composer Galina Ustvolskaya) my attention was drawn to what appeared (for her) some uncharacteristically simple piano scores scattered on the studio floor. She did not play on that occasion, but conveyed excitement about her latest enthusiasm, the recent discovery of the music of a hitherto unknown woman composer with an unpronounceable name. Not until 1994 did I experience the overwhelming impact of music by Galina Ustvolskaya (born June 17 1919), an extraordinary composer from the former Soviet Union. The memory of London Musici's British premiere of her 5 th symphony remains ineradicable. Galina Ustvolskaya lives quietly in St Petersburg and does not travel. In the last few years her fame has spread as fast as a forest fire to become legendary, and CDs of her music multiply apace. It says much for her impact upon the musical world that in celebration of her 80 th birthday this year, Ustvolskaya's music was the central feature of the annual festival which the Royal Academy of Music devotes each year to a leading living composer, despite there being no expectation that she might attend personally and take part in the teaching programme. She is also to be featured in November at this year's Huddersfield International Festival of Contemporary Music.

WRITING TO VERMEER Johannes Vermeer Waarschijnlijk had hij een eigen kunsthandel, waar hij een groot deel van zijn tijd aan besteedde; voor schilderen bleef weinig tijd over. Misschien dat er daarom maar 35 schilderijen van zijn hand (bekend) zijn. Een voordeel van het feit dat hij door zijn kunsthandel financieel onafhankelijk was, is dat Vermeer nooit voor opdrachtgevers heeft hoeven te werken, zoals de meeste collega's. In zijn schilderijen kon Vermeer zijn eigen smaak volgen. Heel bijzonder aan zijn schilderkunst is de bijna fotografische weergave en zijn grote beheersing van licht en kleur. Hij schilderde meestal interieurs, waarop een of twee vrouwen te zien zijn. Vrouwen die wat drinken, vrouwen die een instrument bespelen en vooral vrouwen die lezen of brieven schrijven. Hoewel hij leefde in de Gouden Eeuw, een tijd waarin het Nederland voor de wind ging, heeft hij veel problemen op financieel gebied gehad en toen hij op zijn 43e overleed, liet hij zijn gezin in grote schulden achter. Zijn weduwe schreef: "Tijdens de lange en verwoestende oorlog met Frankrijk was het mijn man niet alleen onmogelijk zijn werk te verkopen, maar bovendien was hij, tot zijn schade, blijven zitten met de schilderijen van andere meesters met wie hij handel dreef. Dientengevolge en ook vanwege de belasting van zijn kinderen, terwijl hij van zichzelf in het geheel niet over middelen beschikte, raakte hij zozeer in razernij en verval, dat hij in een of anderhalve dag van een gezonde toestand overging in de dood."

Bij het NIOD werken wetenschappers. Die komen altijd met aanbevelingen voor verder onderzoek. Anders zou het werk gedaan zijn. En dat kan de bedoeling van wetenschap niet zijn. Wie was bijvoorbeeld die "pianoplayer" waar overste Karremans in zijn smeekbede tot Mladic op doelde? Ik weet toevallig dat Jan Vayne, Wibi Soerjadi en Reinbert de Leeuw dat graag zouden willen weten. Ze vrezen dat het over hen gaat. En ja, als iemand die ten tijde van het drama wethouder in Amsterdam was zijn verantwoordelijkheid al moet nemen, dan toch zeker ook de pianist die in Srebrenica concerteerde. Al was het alleen in de gedachten van de commandant. Reden voor mij om Karremans terstond persoonlijk om opheldering te vragen. Welnu, de Nederlandse pianisten kunnen gerust zijn, het gaat niet om hen. Karremans doelde op de pianist uit de albums van Lucky Luke. Ingehuurd om het gezellig te houden in de saloon. Biertje op de piano, sigaartje in de mond, en spelen maar. Ook als er gasten zijn met ietwat andere opvattingen over gezelligheid. Vooral met de Daltons wil dat weleens het geval zijn. Dan vliegen de kogels in het rond. Maar daar laat de pianist zich niet door van de wijs brengen. Die bukt even als er een kogel in zijn richting komt. Of hij tilt zijn glas even op. Maar het gepingel houdt aan. Tot het werkelijk uit de klauwen loopt. Dan pakt hij zijn biertje en vlucht hij de kroeg uit. "I am just the pianoplayer. Don't shoot the pianoplayer."

And while the Brubeck family has a ways to go before matching the longevity of the Bachs, it already has two generations of musicians who continue to make their mark. Patriarch Dave Brubeck, 82, is still going strong as a composer and jazz pianist. Of his six children, four are professional musicians: Darius, Chris, Dan and Matthew. Darius, a pianist, runs the jazz department at the University of Natal in Durban, South Africa. Dan is a drummer. Matthew, a cellist who also plays piano and bass, toured this past summer with the Dixie Chicks. Lately, though, it's Chris, 51, who has become especially visible as a player and a composer. The St. Paul Chamber Orchestra will play a new work by Chris Brubeck Thursday night as part of three concerts at the Southern Theater in Minneapolis devoted to new and recent American music conducted by Reinbert de Leeuw.

[Bryars wrote at the time:] This article was written in 1979 for a monograph on Erik Satie, edited by Ornella Volta, in the series Les Cahiers de l'Herne; the book was intended for publication in 1980 but has been delayed and is now expected to appear shortly. The article as it is published here is a revised version of the original English text. [1] In 1971 Christopher Hobbs and I performed Satie's Vexations Vexations by others who had performed it, or who had been intimately acquainted with it, and to publish these as an anthology. The anthology was advertised in the Experimental Music Catalogue in 1975 as being 'in preparation', but it has not yet appeared. Vexations has had an enormous impact on recent music, partly because of its celebrated proportions (a sort of 'Ring des Nibelungen des pauvres'), and partly because of the effect it has had on those who have performed it. But it is clear from an examination of the details of the various performances that its executants have not all approached it in the same spirit, nor have they fixed anything like a common duration for the piece. In this respect the record of the performances provides a picture of the kinds of distortion to which Satie's work is prone, and the kinds of indulgence that its performers tend to perpetrate.
