By Catherine Reese Newton
The Salt Lake Tribune
Benedetto Lupo is no stranger to Salt Lake City. Since his bronze-medal finish in the 1986 Gina Bachauer International Piano Competition, he has returned often as a recitalist and Bachauer juror. This week, however, marks his first appearance as featured concerto soloist with the Utah Symphony. Lupo will perform Brahms' Piano Concerto No. 1 with the orchestra and principal guest conductor Pavel Kogan.
The Brahms concertos are close to Lupo's heart, he said in a phone interview from his home in Acquaviva delle Fonti, an Italian town near Bari on the Adriatic coast. The First, in particular, has "so much struggle about it," he said. He noted that Brahms wrote the first theme of the concerto in response to a suicide attempt by his mentor, Robert Schumann; "it's so tragic, yet there is so much love." (The second and third movements were written after Schumann's death in 1856.) Brahms' conception of the work evolved from symphony to four-hands sonata to concerto. "Like a big symphony, it has so much to say with the piano," Lupo said.
Lupo, who recently performed both Brahms concertos on back-to-back subscription concerts in Denmark to celebrate his 40th birthday, said he discovers new things in them each time he plays them. He has been performing them for about 10 years.

Pianist who conceived the saga of Babar the elephant
April 15 2003 Cecile de Brunhoff, Pianist, 1903-2003 Cecile de Brunhoff, who has died in Paris aged 99, made up a story in 1930 about an orphaned elephant to tell her children at bedtime; they were so enchanted that they told her husband, who turned it into a picture book. It was published as The Story of Babar in 1933, soon to be followed by The Travels of Babar Babar and his Children , and so on. The latest in a series of more than 35 books was Babar's Yoga for Elephants , published by Cecile de Brunhoff's son, Laurent, last year, a departure from the established format of Babar and family encountering a problem, solving it, and living happily ever after. One of four children, Cecile de Brunhoff was born Cecile Sabouraud in Paris. Her father was a dermatologist, her mother a housewife who died when Cecile was very young. After graduating from the Ecole Normale de Musique in Paris, where she studied piano under Alfred Cortot, Cecile Sabouraud worked there as a piano teacher. In 1923 she married Jean de Brunhoff, a painter from Montparnasse. They set up home at Neuilly, near the Bois de Boulogne, and had three sons.

Mini-lecture #6: Shape of the Hand, Posture, and Ways to Touch the Keyboard

Open Seminar for Piano Dec. 5, 1999 (Sun.)
To begin with, this is a mini-talk. Yesterday I talked to you about urtexts and scores, and today I would like to talk to beginners, especially, about the shape of the hand you should use when playing the piano. I'm sure your teachers have already made a point to tell you about it. Anyway, there is the simple question of what the best hand shape is for playing the piano. However, since everyone has differently shaped hands some are long, others are short, while some people have strong, muscular hands, and others have delicate ones we can't make any generalities about it. When I was small, I was taught that children should play the piano as if they were holding an egg in each of their hands. When you grow up, then, the egg is replaced by an orange, or a Watson pomelo, or even a grapefruit anyway, something natural like that. I don't think that the hands should be kept in an angular form when playing the piano.
But that is not the whole story. Since the piano is a big instrument, as you can see, the hand spreads out sideways like this when you are performing, right? Also, even if you started out playing with rounded hands when your were small, as your body grow bigger and bigger, and you grow taller, it's a bit unnatural, actually, to curl up the hand too much when playing. So I don't think that this sort of thing should be enforced that much it's better to leave it up to each person.

He owns an authority that without doubts places him as one of the leading living pianists. Nearly 70 years he is very active as a performer - and you will often find his name on the bills in London and Wien. It is the music of the german classics this is his field. The world of Brendel is Haydn - four of his sonatas are on these records - Beethoven and Schubert. When Philips published their big Mozart-compilation some years ago they selected Brendel's recording of his piano concertoes. He is a musical personality impossible to come away from on today's scene - as well as concerning his frequent performances and many recordings. Kjell Moe

Customer Reviews: Avg. Customer Rating: A new way to look at Spanish music from a true artist:
The Albeniz sonata (opens Disc One) sounds amazingly like Bach, yet nothing like Bach, in de Larrocha's hands. Somehow, she brings the meditative astringency of Bach to this Spanish music. No wild fandangos and flashy dancing, this is a very cerebral interpretation of a composer who perhaps would not be so well known if it weren't for de Larrocha's lifelong championing of Spanish composers. Joy of joy, she also includes the rarely-heard Cansons i Dansas of Federico Monpou, a composer who has a lot in... more info Fiery jewelry by the supreme Hispanic pianist.:
