and the second from Op.55). Mozart was a favourite, Beethoven less so. His attitude towards his contemporaries was ambiguous at best. He was cool towards Schumann, never reciprocating the latter’s enthusiasm for his own music. And his admiration for Liszt was tinged with jealousy. But perhaps the most important aspects of his personality were his insecurity and his indecisiveness (many letters to his parents in which he expresses his hesitation between going back to Poland to fight alongside his countrymen or staying in his new adopted home attest to this trait). This "folie du doute," his inability to make up his mind, actually permeates many of his works and is even reflected in his harmonic language, making him by far one of the most original harmonists of his time. The second Prelude Op.28 in A minor

Vol. 6, No. 6 March 2001
C onsidering the phenomenal number of articles written about Alfred Brendel, it might seem futile — or at least not particularly useful — to take yet another look at this incomparable pianist. He is an artist whose peers hold him in the highest regard. He is a perfectionist when it comes to technique, and a musical interpreter of profound sensitivity. In fact, he challenges the standards, expectations, and unspoken laws of the classical music jungle and emerges greater than ever, yet able to maintain a disconcerting frankness and modesty. Brendel has a remarkably fine-tuned “ear,” not only when performing but with regard to life in general, and he leads parallel lives that are mutually enriching. He is a chamber player (he recently joined with baritone Matthias Goerne, to the delight of fans of the vocal art); he performs with orchestra (in April he will perform all of Beethoven’s concertos with Seiji Osawa and the Boston Symphony Orchestra) and as a soloist (recitals in Montreal and Ottawa are scheduled for March and April). Brendel is also an essayist ( Thoughts and Afterthoughts has been providing absorbing reading for musicians and music-lovers for over thirty years); a new-fledged poet (his collection

DINU LIPATTI
THE LEGENDARY ROMANIAN PIANIST

DINU LIPATTI
(1917 Bucarest (Romania)- 1950 Geneve)
THE DISTANT SOUND OF DINU LIPATTI'S NAME
The Roumanian Dinu Lipatti is a myth among pianists, a cult figure ringed by the aureole of a reputation. The recording of Robert Schumann's Piano Concerto is one of those of which words like "imperishable" and "unsurpassable" are used, and it is the epitome of supple elegance; some of his Chopin performances exert the spell of "Romantic Schwarmerei" ; his interpretations of Bach are heard with respect but the listeners shake their heads over the perpetuation of 19th-century taste. And they lament Lipatti's Schubertian fate, his early death at only 33. The very sound of Dinu Lipatti's name is a distant, oh so distant sound from a remote age in the history of piano-playing. Where does the key to Lipatti's art lie? Not in the fluency, accuracy and high technical standard, for every aspiring pianist has those today, as a matter of course. In the breadth of his repertory (even if it excludes Beethoven)? It's not uncommon. In the poetry and expressiveness of his attack7 A large number of presentday pianists equal him in that. I never had the good fortune to hear Lipatti in the concert hall; I know him only through his recordings. Yet I will venture the theory that the key to Lipatti's art lies in something that reference books pass over: in the fact that he was a composer and also a conductor, just as his compatriot and godfather George Enescu was a violinist and a composer.

he following are sketches of the great pianists. By and large, they are pianists of the "Golden Age" of pianism. In all honesty, I spent more time studying about these pianists and listening to their recordings than I should have...but what great memories! I did these sketches when I was in High School. My method was to listen to the recordings of whichever artist I as sketching, and by so doing get a clue into their general aura. That is to say, when I listen to Friedman play, I see fire and orange...hence, Friedman is drawn in orange. Rachmaninoff could hardly be any color but brown, Godowski blue, and so on. Customer Reviews: Avg. Customer Rating: Six Stars:
If you play piano, or if you like concerts of piano, buy it! It's really fantastic. The liszt's totentanz it's simply uncredible. He played another "metamorphosis" of a valse by Johann Strauss. I've never seen nothing similar, it's really "animal". Another point is that I know Mr. Freire and, I don't know why, he doesn't like recording. The few freire's recordings is saved in concert. So, this is unique, fabulous recording. I repeat: just buy it! Rare vintage Freire: Aren't those people in Paris lucky. Not only do they live in the most beautiful city on earth, but they are also about the only ones that can catch a glimpse of this great pianist nowadays. Fortunately, there is this disc set. Both in repertoire, technique and artistry Freire belongs to a small and highly select group of musicians. Mozart in refined perfection. Liszt performed in a way that makes you fear that the end of times will soon be upon us. Schumann and Chopin served equally well. Last but not least... more info A Pianist's Pianist:

54. Paul Cadmus
most interesting documents in this collection is a letter which Cadmus wrote to Aitkin on a program for a recital given by the French pianist alfred cortot.
http://archivesofamericanart.si.edu/exhibits/piano/cadmus.htm
Paul Cadmus (1904-1999) The fondness Paul Cadmus felt for for his friend Webster Aitkin, the concert pianist, is evident in his letters. Cadmus often discusses mutual friends, painting and music, and expresses his admiration of Aitkin's musicianship. In a 1947 letter Cadmus muses, "I keep wishing: if only I were rich! Not for the money; just so that I could commission you to do K. 503 and a Weber concertoit mightn't be good, but I would like to hear itfor an invited audience: yours & mine." Aside from how he felt about Weber's concertos, Cadmus certainly had confidence in Aitkin's pianistic skills (developed through study at the Curtis Institute in Philadelphia, and with Emil van Sauer and Artur Schnable in Vienna) and an appreciation for piano literature. As he asks Aitkin in one letter, "So are you breaking, or by this time have broken the back of Eliot's sonata: How pleased I am; it implies a back and a bone to break. How rare! In these days when the anatomy of the worm is body enough for most composers."
Postcard to Webster Aitkin from Paul Cadmus, August 19, 1946

http://www.webcom.com/cyteen/links/lipatti.html
From 1936 on, Lipatti's reputation as a pianist, and then as a teacher, continued to grow. In 1944, he was made a professor at the conservatory in Geneva, where he remained until 1948. During this time, he began preparations for a concert tour of America; but it became apparent that he was suffering from leukemia, and the tour was canceled.
Hopes for his recovery rose when he received expensive cortisone treatments for which Igor Stravinsky, Charles Munch and Yehudi Menuhin to name only a few, contributed large amounts of money but the improvement in his condition proved temporary. In the fall of 1950, at the age of thirty-three, Dinu Lipatti played his final concert.
After Lipatti's death, on December 2, 1950, the great German pianist Wilhelm Backhaus said, "All that is left for us is to remember the beauty of what he gave us, and to mourn."
