Down the years, since its foundation 52 years ago, it has brought enormous pleasure to opera and classical music lovers, and has achieved an international reputation built on solid and sometimes spectacular achievement. Those who look upon the Wexford Festival as the pinnacle of the operatic year and make the pilgrimage year after year can rattle off the names of the great andthegoodwhoappeared there before fame and fortune descended on them - most noticeably Luciano Pavarotti. All this has been done through hard work locally and more than a little help from their friends. Diageo, formerly Guinness, has sustained its sponsorship for an amazing 30 years, which must be some kind of a record that Guinness could include in its own book. Other sponsors such as Unilever and Merrill Lynch have also been long-term supporters. And the fact that the festival has been a sell-out for the past seven years might not be too far away from a record either. This year, like many other arts organisations, but particularly ballet and opera,Wexford has felt the pain of having a cut in its Arts Council grant. Nevertheless, it has an outstanding series of events in addition to the three operas being produced - Die Drei Pintos by Mahler and von Weber, Maria Del Carmen by Granados and Svanda Dudak by Weinberger.

TCM Archives Sunday Business Post Sunday, November 11, 2001 : Classical Sunday, November 11, 2001 By Dick O'Riordan Bryden Thomson Memorial Concerts National Concert Hall November 7 This concert was the perfect antidote to what felt, and looked, like the first day of real winter. There is a definite glow about the works of Schubert and Mendelssohn. Both may lack the depth and profundity of Beethoven, their contemporary, but their ever-circling melodies and innovation have real zest. The programme chosen was Schubert's second and fourth symphonies and Mendelssohn's first piano concerto. These are not among the composers' most popular works, yet they provided a most beautiful night's entertainment and a fitting beginning to the tenth anniversary tribute to the memory of the conductor Bryden Thompson whose contribution to classical music on all of this island is well remembered and still very much appreciated. The success of the concert was in no small part due to the exhilarating playing of the Orchestra of St Cecilia under the British conductor Howard Shelley, a personal friend of Thompson's. Schubert was not one to underwork his string sections and the orchestra, playing flat out for sustained periods, was most impressive. Pianist Finghin Collins was the soloist on Mendelssohn's concerto. This young man has recently been lauded to the skies in performances in the United States and has an upcoming touring schedule in Europe that would make even Tony Blair blanch. Collins played the concerto with elegance and great confidence: it is a work of exquisite passages peppered with many twists and turns but he handled it all with striking confidence. It is hard to believe that barely two years ago he played on the same stage as an award-winning student. His progress is most impressive.

C A T H E R I N E L E O N A R D completed her studies with Herman Krebbers in Amsterdam two years ago and is developing a distinguished international career. Awards include the Heineken Violin and bow, the Ulster Bank Bursary, the Ford "Ka" Classical Musician of the Year, first prize winner in the Friends of the Concertgebouw "Concours" in the Netherlands, third prize in both the Kulenkampff and the Scheveningen International Violin Competitions, several Arts Council Bursaries and a Fulbright Award for studies in America. Described by Michael Dervan of the Irish Times as "quite simply the leading Irish violinist of her generation .....a musician whose playing is typically both thoughtful and touching .... Ms Leonard managed to retain that natural directness of statement and sentiment which is her particular musical gift." She has performed extensively in Europe, including the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam and a performance for the Finnish President at Finlandia Hall in Helsinki. She has played in the US, Canada and Australia, both as soloist and chamber musician. For the past six years she has been invited to perform with leading musicians from around the world in the Prussia Cove Open Chamber Music Seminar. The Royal Irish Academy of Music Symphony Orchestra is a group comprising eighty of the Academy's finest musicians from North and South of the Border. Under the baton of James Cavanagh, this group makes several annual appearances at the National Concert Hall. The group meets weekly at the Academy to rehearse a wide variety of repertoire, which they perform regularly in concert in Dublin and around the country. They have made several radio and television appearances on such programmes as the Gay Byrne Show and BBC's Songs of Praise. In 1998 members of the Orchestra appeared in Symphony Hall Birmingham as part of a collaboration with Birmingham Conservatoire. Most recently the Orchestra performed to critical acclaim under the baton of Gerhard Markson, Principal Conductor of the National Symphony Orchestra in All Hallows College, Dublin. In November 2002 members of the Orchestra travelled to the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama in Glasgow to work with the distinguished conductor Richard Armstrong CBE in a concert tour of Glasgow, Dublin Belfast and Kendal.

Regarded as one of Ireland's most exciting young chamber ensembles, the Royal Irish Academy of Music Chamber Orchestra was founded in 1997 by Elizabeth Csibi. What's On Day-by-day account April Wednesday, April 28 Derry Nice I made my way to Derry today, on the trusty Ulsterbus. The journey takes 1¾ hours, through winding roads in fields and sunshine. The intention was to go to the Christ Church to review a concert by Finghin Collins , an Irish pianist, and the youngest in this series of lunchtime concerts, broadcast on Radio 3. The concert was Romantic and virtuosic, including Brahms and Schumann, Liszt and Prokofiev. Sadly it was a concert where I didn't really connect, partly because someone very important sat next to me, which prompted a voice inside to say "Don't cough! Whatever you do!" This prompted an inevitable need, and an hour of non-coughing, particularly in the quiet places, which almost killed me. So I apologise, but this is not a concert I can now guiltlessly review. Derry is a city built on a hill-side, with a mixture of large, modern department stores, and smaller roads with plenty of older shops and churches.

Symphony Orchestra At Easter 1999, the orchestra went on tour to Munich with soloist Charles Cavanagh, trumpet, to perform in Garmering and at the University of Munich. A two-day visit to Vienna followed before the orchestra returned home. They were proud to accept a second IAYO/Penneys Youth Orchestra Achievement Award for the tour. John Finucane - Conductor John Finucane studied at Trinity College Dublin before embarking on a career that has seen him excel as an orchestral musician, chamber musician, soloist and conductor. He has performed all the major clarinet concerti with the National Symphony Orchestra of Ireland and the R.T.E. Concert Orchestra in Ireland and on tour in Britain. He is now regarded as one of the most gifted and versatile musicians working in Ireland today. As a conductor, John has worked with the National Symphony Orchestra of Ireland, the RTE Concert Orchestra, the Ulster Orchestra and the Orchestra of St. Cecilia. He has worked on many occasions with the Surrey Sinfonietta, London and conducted the Opera Theatre Company on tour in Ireland and at the Covent Garden Festival. He is currently musical director of the Dublin Youth Symphony Orchestra and the Hibernian Chamber Orchestra. In 1995 he was appointed principal clarinet with the National Symphony Orchestra of Ireland and in the same year joined the teaching faculty of the Royal Irish Academy of Music in Dublin.
