ROGER WRIGHT (USA), age 27
As the saying goes, either you have it or you don't. From the opening seventh chord of Schumann's gentle , Roger Wright, whose entry to the Cliburn competition was only confirmed a week ago, demonstrated just what 'it' is. Rarely has a pianist communicated the spirit of a work with such poignance and immediacy, which was abundantly evident, even over the airwaves, from the hushed reaction of the audience. My admiration for Roger Wright is no secret; I have reviewed him in concert and on disc on several occasions. As he proved again today, he is without question the greatest pianist that America has produced since William Kapell. His playing seems to grow exponentially with each performance, blossoming into something deeper and more complex. Abundantly detailed and passionate, intelligent yet unafraid of risks, here is a pianist who simply has it all, and then some. There is an edge to his music making that rivets for its vivid dynamic intensity and dramatic audacity, informed by a firm rhythmic spine that refuses to compromise musical values for cheap effect. In Chopin's august evergreen, the B flat minor Sonata, Mr Wright, a native Texan and one of only two Americans competing, pulled out all the stops, exploiting it for its cumulative energy while cultivating its

2 John Bell Young ON WATCH The hall is revealing in a way the broadcasts are not. For one thing, it is possible to hear how each competitor really sounds as opposed to how he makes music. So, as it turns out, the young Russian Primakov has a tiny sound one that barely projects beyond the footlights. His colleague, Koltakov sports a watery tone, which only enhances his flashy and relatively insubstantial playing that overstayed its welcome after five minutes. His glib reading of the Liszt sonata was grotesquely cavalier, turning it as he did into the kind of cocktail music you might hear in a cruise ship lounge. For this pianist rushing and slowing down in the cantabile sections while drawing attention to the downbeats over the barlines is a measure of profound expression. It was a distasteful performance, though the audience went wild after his even more vulgar reading of Liszt's 2nd Hungarian Rhapsody in the Horowitz paraphrase. Diabelli or every affective nuance in a Bach suite, any judgement he renders beyond the merely obvious or superficial is already suspect. What's New A Grammy caps Van Cliburn's resonant and rocky career February 9, 2004 By SCOTT CANTRELL / The Dallas Morning News The year was 1958, in the middle of the Cold War. Just months before, the Soviet Union had hurled the first satellite into space. Nuclear-tipped missiles were feared to be not far behind. Cliburn Foundation Van Cliburn performs in Moscow in 1958. The Russians agreed he played Tchailkowsky better than they did.
On Sunday, Mr. Cliburn, who has lived in Fort Worth since 1986, will receive a lifetime achievement award at the 46th annual Grammy Awards in Los Angeles. Mr. Cliburn, who probably defined the image of the classical musician for the baby-boom generation heavily represented at the Grammys, is the only classical artist thus honored this year. But previous honorees have included Leonard Bernstein, Enrico Caruso, Pablo Casals, Jascha Heifetz, Leontyne Price, Arthur Rubinstein and Arturo Toscanini. The Grammy award comes only seven months after Mr. Cliburn received the Presidential Medal of Freedom from President Bush. The citation praised the pianist for helping to "shatter cultural barriers at the height of the Cold War." Mr. Cliburn received one of the Kennedy Center Honors in 2001. With the pianist's 70th birthday coming up in July, his career is ripe for honors – and reconsideration.

First APA to win Van Cliburn competition Nakamatsu: "If they choose to market me as a role model for the Asian community, I would be very happy." by Sam Chu Lin Many of the spectators in the concert hall in Fort Worth, Texas, applauded and chanted "U.S.A! U.S.A.!" as the emcee was about to announce the winner of the 10th Van Cliburn International Piano Competition, one of the music world's premier events. Last Sunday, America'sand Asian America'sgreat hope was 28-year-old Jon Nakamatsu of Sunnyvale, Calif. In a popular victory, Nakamatsu was indeed named the first-place winner, beating out five finalists from Russia, Italy, Israel, and Germany. He is the first American in 16 years to win the competition (which has been held every four years, with one exception) and the first Asian Pacific American to win since its inception in 1962. "It was an incredible evening," Nakamatsu exclaimed. "That night, it seemed that everything with the orchestra clicked, and I had a great time out there with the conductor. The ovation was tremendous. I don't think I'll ever forget that." Many people, including legendary pianist and competition founder Van Cliburn, thought Nakamatsu had performed Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto No. 3 with relative ease and with a unique flair.

CLIBURN, RILDIA BEE O'BRYAN qv benefactor Kay Kimbell qv in the Westover Hills neighborhood of Fort Worth. There she lived her final years, lionized as the mother of an international concert star and musical celebrity. As long as her health permitted, well into her nineties, she circulated prominently in Fort Worth society at her son's side at cultural and church events (she was a lifelong, devoted Southern Baptist) and frequently entertained visiting musical artists. She died at the age of ninety-seven in Fort Worth on August 3, 1994, five days after suffering a stroke. At that time, construction had begun on the Rildia Bee O'Bryan Organ at Broadway Baptist Church in Fort Worth; it was projected that the instrument would be the largest organ in Texas at the time of its completion in October 1996.
