Cliburn, Van (b. 1934)
page: The young American pianist Van Cliburn gained sudden worldwide fame in 1958, when, at the height of the Cold War, he won the inaugural International Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow. Critics praised his technique and virtuosity, and Americans hailed him as a hero. Cliburn embarked on an ambitious performing and recording career, and began sponsoring a quadrennial International Piano Competition in 1962, but retired from the stage in 1978. He resumed limited concert appearances in 1989. Harvey Lavan Cliburn, Jr. was born on July 12, 1934, in Shreveport, Louisiana, where his father, Harvey Lavan Cliburn, was working as a purchase and sales representative for an oil company. His mother, Rildia Bee O'Bryan Cliburn, was a piano teacher. She was to exert a major influence on the life and career of her only child. Sponsor Message.

Musical Phenomenon in the Midst of Cold War by Betty Blair
Van Cliburn, 25, arrives in Baku for Concert. June 1960. Courtesy: Azerbaijan National Archives.
It was 35 years ago, on June 28, 1960, that a tall, lanky, youthful Texan gave a singular piano performance in Baku's Philharmonia. Two years earlier, he had caused a sensation both in the USSR and the U.S. by winning the coveted First Tchaikovsky International Piano Competition in Moscow.
To this day, Van Cliburn's concert in Baku is remembered as one of the most extraordinary foreign performances ever given in Azerbaijan. Those who were fortunate enough to gain admittance (approximately 1,500 people) still remember it vividly.
This past June, Nina Fischeva, Director of the Photo and Cinema Materials at Azerbaijan's National State Archives, along with Fuad Akhundov, author of our series, "Legacy of the Oil Barons", prepared an album of Van Cliburn's visit to Baku from photos they found buried in the archive's files. Cliburn's birthday was coming up on July 12th; he would be 61. Would it be possible to find him and pass on a little album as a gesture of the admiration that Azerbaijanis still hold for him? Nina had attended Van Cliburn's concert; Fuad had not yet been born although his mother had been one of the lucky few who managed to find a ticket.

Perhaps you've learned about Beethoven and Bach, Mozart or Tchaikovsky and enjoyed their great contributions to our world's history of music. You can thank your interest in classical music to people like Mr. Van Cliburn, who shares his love of classical music by giving attention and support to it. Mr. Van Cliburn is a classical pianist who brought honor to our country in 1958 when he won the 1st Tchaikovsky International Piano Competition in Moscow. Americans beamed with pride to see a young performer from our country play with such skill and style in front of an international audience. His dedication and talent drew admiration for classical music at a time when the space rocket Sputnik had focused many on science and competition between the United States and the Soviet Union was strong. How did such a young man become such an skillful musician? Van Cliburn was born in Shreveport, Louisiana on July 12, 1934, the son of Harvey Lavan Cliburn and Rildia (Ril-da) Bee O'Bryan Cliburn. He began studying piano with his mother at age three. She had studied under Arthur Friedheim, a student of Franz Liszt, teachers well known for their talent and skill. Mr. Cliburn moved to Texas when he was six years old, and won a Texas competition when he was twelve. In 1948 he played in the prestigious Carnegie Hall as the winner of the National Music Festival Award.
