Frederic Chopin, 1810-1849 "Fryderyk Franciszek Chopin was not only one of the great composers of the 19th century, he was also its undisputed poet." Born on March 1 1810, in Zelazowa Wola, a small village outside of Warsaw, the finest years of his short life were spent in Louis-Phillipe's Paris at the height of the Romantic era. His friends and intimates included most outstanding musicians of the day; Berlioz and Liszt, Mendelssohn and Schumann, Delacroix and Mickiewicz, while his unprecedented affair with the novelist George Sand was the talking point of a decade. His ten year relationship with Mme Sand was an attraction of opposites: Chopin was conservative, middle-class and devoutly Catholic and Mme Sand was radical and liberal-minded. In 1848, after the revolution, he left for London in need of money. He performed concerts in Manchester, Glascow, Edinburgh and London and was presented to Queen Victoria. Chopin returned to Paris to die October 17, 1849. The Illustrated London News summed-up his public standing in one sentence: "One of the greatest celebrities of this musical epoch has just expired in Paris: Chopin is no more". As a composer he was unique in writing almost exclusively for the piano and his work in many ways expressed the whole ethos of his age, its emotionalism, its fierce patriotism and its turbulence. His life reached back to the Napoleonic campaigns and looked forward to the bloody revolutions of the late 1840's.

Frederic Chopin Biography Frédéric-François Chopin (March 1, 1810 - October 17, 1849) is widely seen as the greatest of Polish composers and an outstanding pianist as well. Born in Zelazowa Wola in central Poland to a French father and Polish mother, he started his musical education in 1816, composed his first work in 1817, and made his first appearance on stage in 1818. He studied music first with Joseph Elsner, and after 1826 in the Musical School in Warsaw. In 1830 he left Poland for France and lived the rest of his life in Paris, where he died of tuberculosis in 1849. He was companion to novelist George Sand for ten years, but she left him when he got tuberculosis, and he died soon after that. His friends were Franz Liszt and Vincenzo Bellini (beside whom he is buried in the Père Lachaise). Although Chopin is buried in Paris, his heart is entombed in a pillar in the Church of the Holy Cross in Warsaw, Poland. Chopin's music belongs to the Romantic period of classical music. Chopin spent most of the first twenty years of his life in Warsaw. The Polish capital was rather provincial; still he was able to hear many of the best artists of the time perform there. Italian opera and singing in general had an indelible effect on him, through the performances of such great singers as Angelica Catalani. For pianists and lovers of piano music, it is impossible to escape an acquaintance with the life and works of Fryderyk Chopin, who was perhaps the greatest composer of piano music during the Romantic era of the Nineteenth Century. In a relatively short lifetime, Chopin composed an amazing quantity of music, and his works are almost exclusively written for piano solo or piano with orchestral accompaniment. Chopin’s life has been the subject of many movies and books, not only because of his masterfully beautiful piano music, but also because of his rather unconventional relationship with the French novelist, Aurore Dudevant, who published her novels using the pseudonym, George Sand. While Chopin’s star is brighter than ever as a composer, the fame of George Sand as a writer has faded to a degree.
