Chopin: Polonaises No6 As my source of inspiration today, I have chosen Frederic Chopin's Nocturn in E flat major, Opus 9, No 2 , composed when he was barely out of his teens, and is perhaps my favourite. I say 'perhaps' advisedy because, as on many occasions, it seems so at the time of playing. It is a lovely piece of music. 'Nocturne' means 'night piece', or music that is quiet and pensive in mood. The long melody of this piece unfolds into a mood of dreamy contemplation. Towards the end Chopin adds some wonderfully decorative pieces which to me suggests the shimmer of moonlight; and then the piece ends as quietly and serenely as it began. This patriotic Polish composer was in fact half French and left Poland at the age of 20 never to return.. He composed most of his music in France, where he established his legendary reputation as a virtuoso performer. The second of four children of French born Nicholas Chopin and his Polish wife Justina, Frederic was born in Warsaw, Poland on the 1st March, 1810, and became a child prodigy. His Polonaise in G was published in 1817, and a year later, at the age of eight, his brilliant piano technique captivated Warsaw's society audiences.

Around that time, he developed a case of tuberculosis, which eventually killed him at age 39. Almost all of Chopin's works include piano. He wrote concertos and other works for piano and orchestra, but most of his work was for solo piano. His output included three sonatas, 27 etudes, 24 preludes, works in free form such as the ballades, scherzi, and fantasies, and character pieces such as the polonaises, mazurkas, and waltzes. A Psychoanalysis of Frederic Chopin Childhood and Society Tara Matthews Psychology 120 Final Paper November 10, 1999 To briefly introduce Frederic Chopin, one should comment on his amazing contribution to music. He composed almost entirely piano music and produced a wealth of music that forever changed the way we listen to and understand the piano. He naturally transferred his fervent emotion into music. Born in 1810 in the Duchy of Warsaw, he began playing the piano at age three and was composing at age seven. He was a passionate, energetic youth until the onset of tuberculosis in his early twenties. He continued to compose, teach piano lessons, and give small concerts throughout his life, despite his physical weakness. Slowly but painfully, his physical and mental health deteriorated until his death in 1849. In studying child development in his book Childhood and Society One of the most influential contributions to our understanding of human development is Erikson’s theory of the eight stages of development. At each stage there is a crisis, which is actually the psychosocial development of critical steps-"‘critical’ being a characteristic of turning points, of moments of decision between progress and regression." Erikson explained that at each stage a new conflict adds a new ego quality. Chopin presents an interesting subject for analysis using the eight stages. The fact that generativity didn’t bring Chopin satisfaction or happiness tends to go against Erikson’s model for the generativity versus stagnation. Erikson claimed that generativity will bring "enrichment," which implies that Chopin would become better or more fulfilled by such acts. Despite his contributions to the world, Chopin continued to feel emotionally unsatisfied. In addition, the fact that Chopin reached this stage and experienced generativity after failing to accomplish intimacy shows another anomaly to Erikson’s stages. Thus, even though Erikson’s eight stages of development are a valuable model for studying the development of a person, they will not always progress in order or in the same way for everybody, and a failure at one step does not necessarily cause a halt in one’s development.
