Frederic Francois Chopin Chopin, Frederic
Frederic Francois Chopin was one of the most eminent composers of piano music. He was born on Mar. 1, 1810, in Zelazowa Wola, near Warsaw, Poland. His father was French, and his mother Polish.
CAREER
Chopin gave his first public piano recital at the age of eight and began concert tours in 1828. After visits to several German cities and to Vienna with a return to Warsaw in 1829, he gave a concert in Paris in 1832. He then decided to settle in Paris permanently. Robert Schumann had acclaimed Chopin's variations on "La ci darem la mano" (from Mozart's Don Giovanni) with the words "Hats off, gentlemen! A genius!" and later called him "the boldest and proudest poetic spirit of the time." Chopin excelled as a piano teacher, gave yearly concerts of his own music, and frequently performed in the fashionable Parisian salons; he was renowned for his subtle and refined playing.
In 1837, Franz Liszt introduced Chopin to the writer George SAND. She spent the winter of 1838-39 on the island of Majorca with Chopin, who was suffering from a respiratory ailment. Their relationship continued until 1847, and after they separated, Chopin's ailment was diagnosed as tuberculosis. Exhausted by a concert tour of England and Scotland in 1848, Chopin returned to Paris, where he died on Oct. 17, 1849.

This document does not attempt to be a final word on anything. It has always been in a state of flux, and I expect it will continue to be so for a while to come. Some of my information is woefully inadequate (my entry for Schubert read famous song composer for an embarrassingly long time), and a good proportion of the rest is little more than (what I hope is at least reasonably informed) opinion.

Several months after his birth, the whole family moved to Warsaw, where Mikolaj Chopin was offered the post of French language and literature lecturer in the Warsaw Lyceum. He also ran a boarding school for sons of the gentry. Upon his return to Warsaw, Chopin, already free from student duties, devoted himself to composition and wrote, among other pieces, two Concertos for piano and orchestra: in F minor and E minor. The first concerto was inspired to a considerable extent by the composer's feelings towards Konstancja Gladkowska

Biographical Essay About Chopin By David Dubal FREDERIC CHOPIN
1810-1849-Poland

Chopin spent most of the first twenty years of his life in Warsaw. The Polish capital was rather provincial; still he was able to hear many of the best artists of the time perform there. Italian opera and singing in general had an indelible effect on him, through the performances of such great singers as Angelica Catalani. Long before Liszt heard Paganini, Chopin was learning from his violinistic feats.
Hummel, too, played in Warsaw, and his tentative Romanticism and richly ornamented keyboard layout ignited Chopin's precocious genius. Other influences during his adolescence included Spohr's then strangely exotic chromaticism, Field's fragrant nocturnes, and the mysteriousness of Weber. Of equal importance were the dance forms of his homeland. From the age of eight, Chopin occupied himself with them, haunted by their rhythms, dreaming of an idealized Poland. The last page of music he wrote was a mazurka.
Hearing Chopin play the A-flat Etude Op. 25, No.1, Schumann imagined "an Aeolian harp that had all the scales, and these were intermingled by the hand of the artist into all sorts of fantastic embellishments. It was rather an undulation brought out more loudly here and there with the pedal, all gorgeously entangled in the harmony."

CHOPIN
CHOPIN, FREDERIC FRANCOIS The posthumous works number 35 pieces, besides a small volume of songs a few of which are of great interest. Franz Liszt wrote a charming sketch of Chopins life and art (F. Chopin, par F. Liszt, Paris, 1851), and a very appreciative though somewhat eccentric analysis of his work appeared anonymously in 1842 (An Essay on the Works of Fridric Chopin, London). The standard biography is the English work of Professor F. Niecks (Novello, 1888). See also W. H. Hadow, Studies in Modern Music, second series (1908). The editions of Chopins works by his pupil Mikuli and by Klindworth are full of valuable elucidation as to methods of performance, but unfortunately they do not distinguish the commentary from the text. The critical edition published by Breitkopf and Hrtel, with all its mistakes, is absolutely necessary ~or students who wish to know what Chopin wished to put into the hands of players of independent judgment. to have been built by a people occupying this region before the Cholulans. The posthumous works number 35 pieces, besides a small volume of songs a few of which are of great interest.
