School Links and tango music Beethoven, Mozart and tango music By Mary Ellyn Hutton Post music writer Music director Paavo Järvi and the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra close their 2003-04 season with meat and potatoes Ludwig van Beethoven. Featured work is Beethoven's Symphony No. 7, to be heard at 7:30 p.m. tonight, 11 a.m. Friday, 8 p.m. Saturday at Music Hall. Tonight's concert includes a complimentary buffet in the Music Hall foyer beginning at 6:15 p.m. It will be Järvi's third Beethoven symphony with the CSO. (He performed the Symphony No. 4 in 2001, during first season with the orchestra, and No. 5 in 1999 before becoming music director.) Guest artist is pianist Yefim Bronfman in Prokofiev's virtuosic Piano Concerto No. 2. The concert will open with the CSO premiere of Polish composer Witold Lutoslawski's colorful "Symphonic Variations" (1938). As with most large orchestras, the CSO's Beethoven will seek an accommodation with authentic performance practices (the movement to re-create the sound world of Beethoven's time using smaller ensembles and authentic instruments).

POST RESOURCES Subscribe Contact Us Search Back Issues ... School Links lets individual musicians shine Chamber series lets individual musicians shine By Mary Ellyn Hutton Post music writer The Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra is a musical cornucopia. In addition to its Music Hall concerts, Cincinnati Pops concerts, concerts for children and young people and summertime chamber orchestra concerts ("Bach and Beyond"), it also presents chamber music. Founded by CSO music director emeritus Jesús López-Cobos, the CSO Chamber Players perform four concerts each season in Memorial Hall, next door to Music Hall. The 2004 series debuts Feb. 6 with a wide-ranging program comprising Bach's Brandenburg Concerto No. 6, the Sonata for Two Violins by Miklós Rósza (better known for his epic film scores), duets for trombone and double bass by Edward Elgar and Roger Kellaway and Ravel's String Quartet. Since the series began in 1988, it has offered a rich mix of familiar and unfamiliar repertoire. And with the entire 99-member CSO to draw from, it can field instrumental combinations rarely heard on other area chamber music series.

72. OVERS-STEINBACH REVIEW
The Necks are not alone in being fans classical pianist william Chentold Overs that the instrument is the fastest he has every played.
http://www.overspianos.com.au/aust.html
The following is a transcript of an article published in the The Australian newspaper, Sat Feb 17, 2001. THORPEDO OF THE PIANO WORLD It's not every day you're asked to clap a piano-maker. So it was refreshing to hear Australian improvising trio The Necks requesting, and receiving, applause for Sydney piano-maker Ron Overs during a recent gig, in which they gave his new instrument a public test drive. Fifteen years in development, the Overs-Steinbach Piano One (the only one Overs has so far completed) is a special instrument. You recall swimmer Ian Thorpe's fast suit? This is the fast piano - an instrument that reduces the amount of energy lost to the player via friction by as much as half. One reason is that the keys, once struck, return to the resting position much faster, "enabling the pianist to play more notes per second", says Overs. This also means it produces more volume for less effort. Says Necks bassist Lloyd Swanton: "At high volume it seemed limitless, where the note seemed to almost bend back on itself and it really seemed to give extraordinary depth." His colleague, pianist Chris Abrahams, has a way of creating otherworldly overtones by repeating note clusters incredibly fast, and while these can be produced on any good instrument, the Overs-Steinbach is particularly suited to the technique. The Necks are not alone in being fans: classical pianist William Chen told Overs that the instrument is the fastest he has every played. Cost: $70,000 (a Steinway of similar size is around $140,000). Pianist Susan Chen began her performing career at the age of 10, appearing as a soloist with the St. Louis Symphony. After studying at the Oberlin Conservatory of Music, she embarked on the study of jazz improvisation. She moved to Los Angeles to work with pianist Alan Broadbent and saxophonist Warne Marsh. Her jazz studies continued in New York with master piano teacher Lennie Tristano. She worked regularly in New york jazz clubs in the 1980's.
Susan toured Europe with the Warne Marsh Quartet in 1984, including the Heineken Jazz Festival in Rotterdam, and performances in Paris and cities in Scandivavia. In 1986 she played numerous dates in Holland with the Frank Canino Quartet.
Ms. Chen can be heard on two albums with Marsh: Warne Marsh and Susan Chen and Posthumous on Interplay Records. Down Beat Magazine gave the first recording four stars, stating: "In the gem-like tracks both players are at once foreground and background, each a florid counterpoint to the other, each an equal partner...playing like this demands total trust and concentration."
Since moving to San Francisco in 1990, Ms. Chen has been leading her own trio and playing in the city's foremost nightclubs, including Enrico's, where she was described as "fetchingly boppy" by Herb Caen in his column of March 25, 1994. Chen is hailed in Coda Magazine as "one talented lady of the piano."
