IGNACIO CERVANTES: PIANO DANCER by Glenn Jenks The music of Cuban composer Ignacio Cervantes (1847-1905) is almost entirely unknown in this country today. Despite the fact that he was published in both London and New York, his work has slipped beneath the radar of the academic community and scarcely ever gets programmed on the concert stage. The issue here is not an aesthetic one. Even a cursory examination of Cervantes' piano music reveals a composer comfortable in his craft, with a strong sense of musical propriety and an enviable melodic gift. Cuban musicologists hit their highest notes singing his praises, his genius eclipsed only by Ernesto Lecuona in the 20th century. Cervantes studied with the famous Cuban pianist Nicolas Espadero when he was a young boy. Espadero considered him his prize pupil, and when Louis Moreau Gottschalk visited Cuba the proud teacher introduced the two. Gottschalk took him on as a student, and later arranged for the young Cervantes to study with Antoine Francois Marmontel and Charles Alkan at the Paris Conservatoire. In Paris, Cervantes enjoyed much success, and in 1866 won first prize in a piano competition adjudicated by Daniel Auber and Charles Gounod, among others, for his performance of Heinrich Herz' Fifth Piano Concerto.

Political questions were also discussed there and although I disagree on many issues with my Cuban partners, especially those concerning the human rights situation on Cuba, I appreciated very much their willingness to discuss matters with me. You are always welcome to send me a mail if you are curious about Cuba or if you happened to visit Cuba yourself and you might like to exchange experiences. However in this era of globalization the cultural roots of the composers can often not be heard clearly. Because of this musical globalisation the cultural diversity is in danger. This dilemma of globalization versus cultural diversity is the main issue in the new ' 6 Continents Project On November 9 I played my Tango program in 'Kunsthuis 13' (Arthouse 13) in Velp. I always like playing in the concerthall of this museum which has a respectable collection of Cobrapaintings. The audience here is interested in many different kinds of music and the atmosphere is usually pleasantly informal.

The Contradanza and Danza in Cuba and Puerto Rico by Elias Barreiro During the 19th century the contradanza and the danza developed in the Caribbean, particularly in Cuba and Puerto Rico. Developing with it were some of the best composers in Latin America: Manuel Saumell, Ignacio Cervantes, Juan Morel Campos. Many other composers from throughout the Caribbean, Latin America, and South America had success in composing in these same forms. The origin of the danza is believed to be from England and the word contradanza translates as country dance. However, there is speculation that the danza may have begun in Normandy and then adopted by the English. The contradanza consists of two sections of eight measures which are repeated, for a total of thirty-two measures. The first section is called the paseo or promenade where the people would stroll around the dance floor. The second part is faster and couples would start dancing. This second part is better defined than the first and shows the true character of the danza. The contradanza is written in 2/4 and 6/8 time and belongs to the so-called square dance, a style of dancing where couples collaborate to form diverse figures. The culture of Cuba is a wonderful mixture of Caribbean, Spanish, and African influences, which provides the foundations of Cuba's music. This created an extraordinary and varied culture heritage from which to draw inspiration, creating a unique and rich setting for music. The city of Havana supported Italian Opera, Spanish Zarzuela, theaters, movies, and military bands providing aspiring musicians many opportunities. Spanish contributions to the music of Cuba are melodic and harmonic while the rhythmic African influence supplies it with its most distinct traits.

JOSHUA EDELMAN Joshua Edelman was born and grew up in Manhattan. He studied at the High School of Music and Art, Manhattan School of Music and New York University. Edelman relocated to Spain in 1980 where he worked intensively as a teacher and performer, travelling extensively throughoutSpain and also touring in Holland, Portugal and Latin America. During the twenty four years that he has been living in Spain he has performed with important figures such as Donna Hightower, Presuntos Implicados, Juan Pablo Torres, Abdu Salim, Perico Sambeat, Manuel Machado, Antonio Serrano, Michelle McCain, etc. As a pianist and composer he combines admirably his classical and jazz training with the passion he feels for the latin music he fell in love with in his youth in New York. Edelman has travelled to various Latin American countries to study the roots of their music. Recently, Joshua along with his latin jazz group "Conexiones" made up of musicians from New York, Cuba, Panama, Spain and Sweden, have just released his fourth CD called "Fusión de Almas" (Fusion of souls). "Fusión de Almas" is an enchanting piece written by the renowned Cuban pianist and composer, Ignacio Cervantes (1847-1905), a "Romance Without Words" which he dedicated to his daughter, María Cervantes (1885-1981), also a pianist and composer.
