To say that Franz Liszt was the most famous pianist of the 19th century barely suggests the extent of his celebrity. Born in Hungary in 1811, he made his debut at the age of nine, met Beethoven three years later, and was known throughout Europe by the time he was thirteen. ...The "problem" posed by his music is that its Romantic rhetoric is as alien to modern sensibilities as, say, the poetry of Shelley... ...By contrast, Alan Walker's biography is a brief for the defense: it contends unequivocally that Liszt was both a great man and a great composer... ...t Fortunately, many early recordings of Liszt's music have been reissued on CD, among the most notable of which are Simon Barere's matchless 1934 performances of Reminiscences de Don Juan and the Rapsodie espagnole, both of which are part of Simon Barere: The Complete HMVRecordings, 1934-36 (Appian CDAPR 7001, two CD's... ...The world persisted to the end in calling him the greatest pianist," Saint-Saens once said, "in order to avoid the trouble of considering his claims as one of the most remarkable of composers... ...The word Liszt himself used to describe his playing was "transcendental...

Paul Jacobs: The legendary Busoni recordings
    Paul Jacobs, piano
[The following are the original texts written by Paul Jacobs for the three Nonesuch LPs. The production of this CD set was invaluably assisted by Teresa Sterne, the original producer of the recordings. We at first thought to honor the late Jacobs; tragically, a critical illness has rapidly shortened Sterne's remaining days. These recordings are as well a monument to her remarkable work. May she rest in glory in this world and the next!]
An etude is a piece that focuses on a particular idea, often one associated with an unusual problem of instrumental technique. In addition to isolating a given problem, an etude also demonstrates the possibilities of composing a piece that grows out of a limited repertory of sounds. It differs from other forms that are limited in their building material (such as a prelude) by its exploration of new regions of virtuosity.
Although Busoni later added a seventh piece (a study for the third, or middle, sostenuto pedal) to his Six Short Pieces (which had first appeared as Five Short Pieces), the Mozart transcription (No.6) seems to me the most dramatic and effective conclusion to the set. There are attacca indications between some of the pieces, and even where there are not, key relationships bind the six studies together in a logical order. Nevertheless, the pieces were not composed in the order in which they now stand; the fourth was written first, and the others were added piecemeal before and after.

    Administrative/Biographical History
Adolph Brodsky was born in 1851 in Taganrog on the Sea of Azov. At the age of not quite five, he began to play the violin and later became a pupil of Hellmesberger at the Vienna Conservatoire. In 1880 he married Anna Skadowska in Sebastopol in the Crimea. The following year Brodsky became the first person to play the Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto, declared unplayable by Leopold Auer to whom the original dedication was made. From 1883 to 1891 Brodsky taught at the Leipzig Conservatoire and established the Brodsky Quartet. In October 1891 Adolph and Anna Brodsky sailed for New York . After a very strenuous three years as concertmaster and soloist with the New York Symphony Orchestra under Walter Damrosch, Brodsky decided to return to Europe.
    Scope and Content
The Brodsky Papers comprise letters, newscuttings, programmes, telegrams, photograph albums, loose photographs, concert tickets, official documents (marriage certificate, diplomas) and music, which were found in the Brodsky home following the death of their last surviving heir.
