Benita Hume Incontrovertibly English by Barrie Roberts Commenting in 1959 on his marriage to Benita Hume, George Sanders wrote, "After 22 years of uninterrupted residence in America, she remains incontrovertibly English." It was, of course, true, this very Englishness was the principal, but not only reason for her failure to achieve stardom in Hollywood during the early 1930s. She either would not or could not modify her speech patterns and demeanor. Consequently, she was cast in supporting roles, playing for the most part upper class Englishwomen or Park Avenue society snobs. A minor reason may have been Benita's habit of shooting from the hip during interviews with reporters on both sides of the Atlantic, undoubtedly causing resentment among some members of the film community. Benita Hume was born at 32 The Avenue, Beckenham, England, on October 14, 1906, to attorney Henry Josiah Humm and his wife, Jane Duff. A second daughter, known as Billie, was born several years later. Benita attended grade school in Beckenham. The family moved to Bristol in 1918, and there she became a student at the Clifton High School. During her school days she took an active part in amateur theatricals which gave her a chance to indulge her flair for mimicry. She also excelled in music. Her formal education ended in 1922, and her parents recognizing her musical talent insisted she attend the Guildhall School of Music in London, their ambition being that she become a concert pianist. However, Benita wanted to be an actress. Ultimately she was able to convince her parents to allow her to leave Guildhall and enroll at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art. After graduating with honors from the Academy in 1924 she sought stage work in London. At this point she changed the spelling of her surname from Humm to Hume.

MARY ASTOR: Reluctant Legend By Barrie Roberts Among the legendary names of Hollywoodâs Golden Age, Mary Astorâs star shines brightly. Strictly speaking, however, Mary was never a star in the accepted sense of her time, but a featured player. This was of her own choosing. Offered starring contracts at various times, she preferred not to shoulder the responsibility of having her name appear above the title of a film. This decision was due largely to a lack of confidence generated by a childhood dominated by demanding parents who looked upon her as a meal ticket. The public with whom she was very popular nevertheless regarded her as a star. Her career lasted an incredible 44 years, during which time she ran the gamut from limpid ingenue to forceful character player. In 1919 Lucile submitted her photograph to a Fame and Fortune contest sponsored by Motion Picture magazine. She placed among the finalists. This was enough to convince her father to move his family to Chicago, where the magazine had offices. Deemed far too young, when seen in person, she was advised to try again when she was older. She did, and was again placed among the finalists. This time the judges named her runner up in the national contest. It was 1920, and Langhanke felt encouraged to move his family once again, this time to New York to launch his daughterâs career. Once in Manhattan Lucileâs picture caught the eye of photographer Charles Albin, who shot a series of camera studies of the girl titled The Madonna Child. These photographs were seen in turn by Harry Durant of Jesse Laskyâs Famous Players company, and this led to a six-month contract for Lucile with Paramount in New York. During a conference with writer Louella Parsons and producer Walter Wanger, Jesse Lasky promptly renamed the girl Mary Astor.

The Claude McLin Discography Latest update: March 8, 2004 Claude Jonathan McLin Jr. was a tenor saxophonist of the purest Lestorian persuasion. According to Vernel Fournier, he even assembled his horn at an angle, as his hero was known to do. Claude McLin was born on December 27, 1925 in Chicago; his parents were Claude McLin Sr. and Isabella Johnson McLin. (On his 1942 application for a Social Security number, he gave his and his father's middle name as "John," but this appears to be an anomaly) In 1944, Claude McLin played in a Chicago-area "baby band" that was probably sponsored by Captain Walter Dyett. (We know that his younger brother Ed studied under Dyett and graduated from DuSable High School, but have yet to verify that Claude attended DuSable.) He served in the Army from 1944 to 1946, and returned to Chicago after his discharge. From 1946 through 1951 he led a combo in Chicago bars and nightclubs. In 1952, he moved with his family to Los Angeles, where he remained an active musician through the mid-1960s. The first documentation we have of Claude McLin's musical career comes from the Chicago Defenders of April 1st and 8th, 1944. These carried an advertisement for a show on April 9th, featuring Jesse "Crown Prince of The Trumpet" Miller and his Orchestra, Walter Dyett and his Orchestra and (Introducing to Bronzeville that Sensational Baby Band:) Levi Sayles and his Orchestra. Each member of Levi Sayles' band had his own photograph on April 1: Levi Sayles (prob. p); Kenneth Williams (tp); Benny White (tp); Herman Anderson (tp); Claude "McLinn" (probably ts); Keith Robinson (ts); "John Griffen" (just 15 years old, as or ts); Leo Cresswell; Lenear Bolden; Wilbur Campbell (d); Herbert Almo (we don't know which instruments Cresswell, Bolden, and Almo playedpresumably two were trombonists and the third handled the string bass). On April 8, a separate photo of Johnny Griffin ran, with the blurb "Griffin is the youngest musician in professional circles and one of the best."

Local News Archbishop James Lyke, OFM 1939-1992 Print Issue: January 7, 1993 Archbishop James Lyke, OFM 1939-1992 By Gretchen Keiser In a funeral marked by his own devotion to the Catholic liturgy, Archbishop James P. Lyke, OFM, was laid to rest Dec. 31 in Atlanta. The 53-year-old prelate, fourth archbishop of Atlanta and the highest ranking black bishop in the U.S. Catholic Church, died Dec. 27 at his Atlanta home. He had fought an inoperable form of cancer for eight months. Treatment proved ineffective and he received hospice care at home until his death. An estimated 1,000 people jammed the cathedral, many standing in double lines in the aisles for the two-hour Mass, which was shaped by explicit directions given by Archbishop Lyke. Coming to Atlanta two and a half years ago, he was mourned as a leader both by those who knew him in North Georgia and by clergy and laity who worked with him over two decades in the Church. A Franciscan priest for 26 years, James Patterson Lyke was born in Chicago Feb. 18, 1939 and was raised by his mother, Ora Sneed Lyke, a Baptist who sent him to Catholic school in the fourth grade to keep him out of trouble. Through that doorway, he and his entire family except one sibling entered the Catholic Church. The youngest of seven children, Jim Lyke grew up poor in a housing project and always revered his mother for the values she instilled in family despite many obstacles. She died while he was in the seminary.
