Hayden Family
The following information comes from a reunion scrapbook found in the Lowell Public Library clipping files (LHFamily HistoriesHayden). Bracketed information or question marks means that the writing is unclear or the information or spelling could be incorrect. Often marriage, birth and death entries for the same reunion appear in different inks or handwritings, suggesting that they were added at a later time. Some newspaper articles about the reunions have been added after the respective reunion in the book. When possible, reunion officials, financial reports, births, deaths, marriages, etc., have been listed in charts. Annual heading are added here to clarify one reunion from the next.

Eldred D. Glass
Memorial services were held for Pfc. Eldred D. Glass, only son of Mr. and Mrs. Albert Glass, Sunday, Oct. 8, 1944, at the Washington Church, south of Lebanon, in remembrance of his heroic service to his country. The family received official notice of his death on Sept. 11. He died Aug. 15 in France. The memorial service was conducted by Chaplain Hubbard of Fort Leonard Wood, assisted by the Rev. Orville Hodge, pastor of the Washington Church. Prayer was offered by the Rev. Fred Barber, pastor at St. James, Mo, who is holding a revival at the church at present, and the Rev. H.C. Reeves, pastor of White Oak Pond church. A quartet composed of the Rev. and Mrs. Fred Barber, Lois Beard and Ralph Dennis sang "Under His Wings," and Lois Beard sang as a solo "Beyond the Sunset," accompanied by a pianist, Pvt. Root of Fort Leonard Wood. The 90th Psalm was read by Chaplain Hubbard. Chaplain Hubbard then presented a wreath in the name of the United States Army in remembrance of Pfc. Glass, and a gold star was placed over a blue one on the service flag of the church by Pvt. Root. At an early age Eldred confessed Christ and united with the Washington Church of Christ, taking an active part in Sunday school and Christian Endeavor along with his parents and sister.

Written by Maya , Thu Mar 19 4:22:20 US/Pacific 1998 Chapter 7 "Behold the reptile with the stinging tail,
That mountains hold not, nor strong walls avail
To bar, nor any weapons wound. Behold
Him who diseases all the world with guile."
Dante "We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow...
...Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep..." John McCrae. Shadows whirled about him, their malicious whispers spearing his soul with wanton darts of pain. Torches guttered in their holders on the bloody dungeon walls. Around him lay his dead and dying, their broken bodies mute testimonials to the hours and months of torture endured within these smothering walls. He sank to his knees, bowed down by the weight of his sorrow. All around him the sound of inhuman laughter mocked his anguish. A familiar body lay before him, limbs asprawl in death, the lovely dark eyes staring at him without recognition, empty of everything, even pain. He took a cold hand gently in his, feeling his heart tearing with the agony of loss and guilt. Grace...the strangled cry choking him, he forgot to breathe, welcoming the pain of airlessness, as if joining her in death would ease his torment.

In Brightest Day, In Blackest Night
Written by Maya , Fri Jan 30 10:17:25 US/Pacific 1998 Chapter 4 "And with tears of blood he cleansed the hand,
The hand that held the steel;
For only blood can wipe out blood,
And only tears can heal."
Oscar Wilde Torches flickered, casting bloody shadows on the night black walls. She was tied to a post in the center, nearly unconscious with fatigue and hunger. Anger and fear warred to keep her tired mind awake. The sounds of fighting in the outer hall had roused her. Now the silence was even worse than before. Behind her, an ominous shadow bulked into being, and she turned her head to look. A stifled scream of primal terror fought its way past her palsied lips at the horror that confronted her; let it be quick, she prayed desperately. And then a running figure erupted into the dark hall; an armored man bearing the strangest weapon she had ever seen. It seemed to be a sword, except that the blade was fiery and shone like the sun. Head swimming, she barely heard him say something; run, she wanted to scream, save yourself! but the words would not come. The warrior stepped forward, nimbly avoiding the mighty sweeps of the Dragon's tail, and dodging the fearsome jaws as they sought to savage him. The sword in his hands swept fiercely forward, slicing the dark air like lightning to plunge into the heart of the Beast. An eldritch shriek drowned out every other sound and reality seemed to crumble around it. She fainted.

"If all other books on trail driving were destroyed, a reader could still get a just and authentic conception of trail men, trail work, range cattle, cow horses, and the cow country in general from The Log of a Cowboy . It is a novel without a plot, a woman, character development, or sustained dramatic incidents; yet it is the classic of the occupation. It is a simple, straightaway narrative that takes a trail herd from the Rio Grande to the Canadian line, the hands talking as naturally as cows chew cuds, every page illuminated by an easy intimacy with life."
