Supplementary materials accompanying each set include liner notes, recording data, and photographs. Publishing, for the most part, is handled by one of our sister companies, Munka Music or Home of the Blues Music , but, in any event, we will be glad to assist the lessee in securing the appropriate mechanical licenses for their territory. CATALOG DIVISIONS: Mimosa Records masters and recordings
Formed in Memphis in 1973 to highlight the blues vocals and guitar work of Joe Willie Wilkins, the label existed for only a short time and produced a total of three 45 rpm records! Since that time, it has grown to collect and record a great variety of music and produce unusual sets of blues and jazz for other labels, all of it containing a high degree of integrity and historical importance, the primary criteria for producer Steve LaVere.
Home Of The Blues Records masters and recordings
An outgrowth of Memphis' Home Of The Blues record shop, the label began in 1960. During its short existence, and with the able assistance and musical guidance of trumpeter and bandleader Willie Mitchell, the label recorded a wide variety of local Memphis and established New Orleans talent. It filled the void left by Sun Records' concentration on rockin' country music prior to Stax' arrival on the scene and the subsequent world-wide popularity of "soul" music. Produced into cohesive sets by Marc Ryan, the recordings are also available in a history-laden four CD boxed set.

Mask Repertory Theatre performs Greek tragedy at Wells
The Ancient Mask Repertory Theatre will perform Aeschylus' Greek tragedy The Persians , translated by Seth G. Benardete, on Wednesday, October 1, at 8:00 p.m. in Phipps Auditorium. Tickets are $2 for students and $6 for adults. The Persians focuses on the agony of war and the tragedy of over-reaching ambition in a tale heightened by the power of masked, chorus-centered theatre. When Persian ruler Xerxes tried to conquer Greece in 480 B.C., he ruled the largest empire the western world had ever known. Defeated by the combined Greek forces in the battle at Salamis, and at Platea, Persia's expansion into Europe ended miserably. First performed in 472 B.C., it is the earliest of the surviving Greek tragedies and the only one based on a historical event. Ancient Mask Repertory Theatre provides a unique opportunity to learn ancient theatrical traditions such as Greek and Roman, Sanskrit, Commedia dell-Arte characters and technique, Medieval liturgical drama, Japanese Noh and Pre-Columbian American texts. The AMRT is an ensemble of performers, directors, composers and researchers committed to using theatre to build community, foster individual exploration, and celebrate the interplay of art and the human condition.

5. About Olivier Messiaen

http://musicofthespirit.com/about_messiaen.html
A French composer and organist, Messiaen (1908-1992) was one of the most influential teachers of this century. He was organist at the Sainte Trinite cathedral, and his music is always highly colorful and rhythmically brilliant. His thematic material is drawn primarily from two sources: Christian themes; and birdsong. "I've imposed the truths of the Faith on the concert hall, but in a liturgical sense...to bring a kind of Office, and organized act of praise, into the concert hall." Among his most important works are Quartet for the End of Time , which is based on the Book of Revelations and was composed in a German prisoner of war camp. "The hunger made me dream of sound colors," and these sound colors found their expression in this remarkable work. Another work, composed two years later, is the Contemplations on the Child Jesus , which expands on the marvelous colors, rhythmic virtuosity and bridsongs found in the Quartet. This piano work, along with his Six Sketches of Birds (see score at right, click to enlarge), are piano masterpieces, the complete

    3. American wartime trends
... The History of British Jazz The first two years of the Anglo/American exchanges (1956/7) had caused no loss of employment for British musicians due to the well–controlled and efficient manner in which they were organised. In most cases, in addition to the American engagements enjoyed (if I may use the expression) by our own musicians, other British musicians were also engaged to perform in the same concerts as the American visitors. American bookers made no secret of the fact that they did not want to engage British bands for the States, and I can well remember an animated discussion I had with the late Joe Glaser. then Louis Armstrong’s booking manager, who made himself quite clear on the point. What was perhaps more unfortunate, for I was used to dealing with such vociferous folk, was that he made clear to our musicians, when they arrived in the States, that he did not really want them—which was hardly calculated to improve their morale. Tommy Whittle, I know, was one of the first victims of this sort of thing but, of course, for those days the money was good! It so happens that Freddy Randall, during his US tour during the previous year, had fared much better, for his band had been the only jazz ingredient of what was really a rock and roll package headed by Bill Haley’s Comets. This meant that there was a large, ready–made audience at every performance, which responded warmly to the good healthy jazz and collective musicianship of Freddy, Betty Smith, Eddie Thompson, and the other British visitors.

... Jazz Development in Britain In writing of the arrival of the Swing era inspired by such orchestras as those of Duke. Ellington, Fletcher Henderson and the Casa Loma, I made special reference to the latter, but it is obvious that, for the record, something should be written in at this stage about the first two, especially as only that of the Duke has actually visited Britain. It was in 1933 that we in Britain first heard and saw the Ellington Orchestra in the flesh although we were already familiar with many af its earlier recordings and had seen it in, I think, at least one film. It would be no exaggeration to claim that, despite earlier visits to Britain of other fairly large and stylish American orchestras such as those of Isham Janes, Vincent Lopez, Ben Bernie, Hal Kemp and Paul Whiteman, it was the Duke's ensemble that really won British musicians for Swing, or big band jazz. He played a stringed bass, made of aluminium instead of wood. Among the personnel were Buddy Featherstonhaugh, who quickly achieved considerable success as a tenor saxophonist and later as a bandleader, and Pat O'Malley, who was the drummer/ vocalist. He later joined Jack Hylton's orchestra as vocalist and ultimately settled in America where he has long been a distinguished television character actor, listed in the credits as J. Patrick O’Malley. Hughes, who incidentally also worked with Hylton for a brief period and was a journalist of considerable talent (which was soon to become his profession), concentrated his activities during the period 1930 to 1933 in the fields of music writing, as both composer and arranger, recording and, of course, journalism.
