Thanks to the reproducing technology of the Disklavier, the Piano-e-Competition was unlike any competition that had gone before: one of the seven judges, acclaimed pianist Yefim Bronfman Piano Competition winner Mei-Ting Sun Screening auditions began on June 4 - 6 and contestants performed preliminary rounds from June 7 - 11. On June 13 and 14 at Sundin Hall at Hamline University, finalists performed Schubert Sonatas and Quintets by Shostakovich, Brahms, and Dvorak. Concerto performances, held on Saturday, June 15 and Sunday, June 16 at Orchestra Hall, were accompanied by the Winnepeg Symphony Orchestra conducted by Mark Russell Smith Six pianists made it to the final rounds. Lottery Music Review: Symphony plays with fire Saturday, March 06, 2004 By Andrew Druckenbrod, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette The Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra has been playing hot these days, but last night it played as if a fire had been lit beneath it. The return of music director Mariss Jansons in one of his last concert weekends; a program that's repeated in New York's Carnegie Hall in two weeks; pianist Yefim Bronfman's smoldering fingers, perhaps even the "Firebird" herself all of these had a role in this inflamed concert at Heinz Hall. We see our "Fima" Bronf-man so often it obscures how much he improves each year. Let there be no mistake, with his commanding performance of Prokofiev's Piano Concerto No. 2, the audience is hearing a pianist in the prime of his career. There's a certain dose of audacity in the early works of Prokofiev a daring for daring's sake that seeks to drench the listener in sheer virtuosity because he could. Bronfman's fantastic chops, steady no matter the vigorous attack on the keyboard, rendered his playing true to the bold and brazen heart of the concerto. The once scandalous first-movement cadenza, where Prokofiev essentially replaces the other players with orchestral writing for the piano, was awe-inducing in Bronfman's blurred hands.
