ASPEN MUSIC FESTIVAL 2002 Brahms Piano Concerto No. 1 in D minor, No. 2 in B flat . Aspen Festival Orchestra, David Zinman, conductor; Yefim Bronfman, piano. July 18, Benedict Music Tent, Aspen, Colorado (HS)
We all go to live concerts hoping for the magic. You know it when you hear it, when the music lifts itself into another sphere, when the communication between the performers and the audience slips into another gear, when breathtaking beauty occurs before our very ears. It happened Thursday evening at the Aspen Music Festival in the slow movement of the Brahms Piano Concerto No. 2. Conductor David Zinman , the festival's music director, drew preternaturally hushed playing from the Aspen Festival Orchestra, laying down the merest whisper of chords. Cellist Richard Weiss, who spends most of the year as first assistant principal for the Cleveland Orchestra, spun out the long solo in a magnificent arc while pianist Yefim Bronfman wove a spell of perfect embroidery around it.

Sony Classical has recently released a CD with music of Emanuel Ax’s and Yevim Bronfman’s two piano program. Emanuel Ax
Devoted to chamber music literature, Mr. Ax regularly collaborates with such artists as Young Uck Kim, Cho-Liang Lin, Yo-Yo Ma, Peter Serkin, Isaac Stern and Jaime Laredo. He has made a series of acclaimed recordings with Mr. Ma, and as a duo they have won three Grammy awards for the Beethoven and Brahms sonatas for cello and piano. The pair has also teamed with Richard Stoltzman for a Grammy award-winning album of clarinet trios and with Pamela Frank, Rebecca Young and Edgar Meyer for the Schubert “Trout” Quintet. The Ax-Stern-Laredo-Ma Quartet has toured and recorded extensively in recent seasons, including piano quartets of Beethoven, Brahms, Dvorak, Fauré, Mozart and Schumann for Sony Classical. Yefim Bronfman

SPRING THAW
Pianist Yefim Bronfman returns to Bargemusic with 'Spring' Sonata
Overheard : Pianist Yefim Bronfman says Beethoven's 'Spring' Sonata sounds "like a conversation between two lovers we're eavesdropping on." By Kevin Filipski
for The Brooklyn Papers Pianist Yefim Bronfman's performance at Bargemusic on April 8 and 10 will also serve as a reunion with Mark Peskanov, the floating venue's artistic director and frequent violinist.
"Mark is an old friend from our school days," Bronfman tells GO Brooklyn. "And it's always great to perform with him."
Bronfman and Peskanov, who attended Julliard together in the late 1970s, begin both programs with Beethoven's Violin Sonata No. 5 in F major, best known as the "Spring Sonata."
"This sonata is one of the most lyrical and yet very dramatic pieces Beethoven ever wrote, and he plays with those two elements in the most effective way," says Bronfman. "Beethoven wasn't the greatest melodist, but this sonata contains some of his most beautiful melodies."
"Then there's the drama that he brings to it, one of the most important elements making Beethoven a very special composer," he adds. "Also, this sonata has one of the best interplays between violin and piano, sounding at times like a conversation between two lovers we're eavesdropping on."

Quartet returns to brilliance
String group's latest 1st violinist blends in By Mark Stryker/Free Press Music Writer
Monday, March 10, 2003
Setting aside briefly the exquisite reading of Henri Dutilleux's spellbinding quartet, the most thrilling thing about the Tokyo String Quartet's concert Saturday was that the group sounded like the Tokyo String Quartet. This is news. The Tokyo quartet had always placed its biggest aesthetic bet on a remarkably homogenous and sumptuous tonal blend, instrumental finesse and a tasteful interpretive flair. When a new first violinist was needed in 1996, the group gambled on Mikhail Kopelman, hoping his Slavic pedigree might inject new energy and ideas into the dialogue. But a string quartet is a fragile balance of personalities, and the risk never paid off. Kopelman proved inconsistent and willful. The quartet lost its polished veneer without leveraging any compensatory artistry. Canadian Martin Beaver replaced Kopelman last year, joining violinist Kikuei Ikeda, violist Kazuhide Isomura and cellist Clive Greensmith. At the Vienna Opera, he often collaborates with conductor Donald Runnicles. Their Billy Budd, with Skovhus in the title role, was the high point of the 2002 Vienna season. According to the European press, he is the hottest Don Giovanni ever. His stunningly rich voice is equally suited to lieder and opera. His recent recordings of the Schubert cycles are now the standards by which all newcomers will be judged. The Skampa Quartet - November 17, 2003

Great as the Emerson is, many music lovers wish he would devote his time primarily as the sonata partner of his wife, the extraordinary Taiwanese pianist, Wu Han. Here is collaborative energy unique on the concert stage today. They say they have been finishing each other's sentences, musical and otherwise, for many years. The tireless duo also leads the Music@Menlo summer festival, and teaches at the Aspen Festival, the Isaac Stern Chamber Music Workshop in New York, and the Jerusalem Music Center. This is our Beethoven's birthday concert, and their very generous program includes most of Beethoven's works for cello and piano.
