He owns an authority that without doubts places him as one of the leading living pianists. Nearly 70 years he is very active as a performer - and you will often find his name on the bills in London and Wien. It is the music of the german classics this is his field. The world of Brendel is Haydn - four of his sonatas are on these records - Beethoven and Schubert. When Philips published their big Mozart-compilation some years ago they selected Brendel's recording of his piano concertoes. He is a musical personality impossible to come away from on today's scene - as well as concerning his frequent performances and many recordings. Kjell Moe

Pianist Brendel caps Union concert series
(Posted: 04/18/00 Wisconsin Week: April 19, 2000 Amy Allan One of the great musicians of the last century, pianist Alfred Brendel will perform Friday, April 28, at the Wisconsin Union Theater to close out the 80th Annual Union Theater Concert Series.
    Brendel Details:
Alfred Brendel concert tickets: $32 ($31 for Union members, $15.50 for UW-Madison students), Union Theater Box Office, 262-2201. The performance will mark Brendel's fifth appearance on the Union's stage. He first performed here in 1973. Brendel ranks among the most esteemed pianists of our time, captivating audiences and critics alike with his masterful interpretations. His traversal of the great piano literature has resulted in many memorable and history-making concerts, including a survey of the later piano works of Schubert and the piano sonatas of Beethoven. Brendel is legendary for his ability to convey, with unerring faithfulness, the emotional and intellectual development of the music he performs. In addition, Brendel is knowledgeable in the fields of literature, language, architecture and film. "Musical Thought and Afterthoughts," a selection of his articles and lectures, enjoys much success on both sides of the Atlantic, as does a volume of essays, "Music Sounded Out," published by Farrar, Straus and Girous.

Pianist Alfred Brendel, one of the leading musicians of our time, gives once-in-a-lifetime access into his private world. In an illuminating 70-minute documentary that chronicles his childhood and early influences, Brendel reveals his stature as a performer, displays his admiration for the work of other artists, and speaks about his views and ideas. Plus an inspiring 30-minute conversation at the piano, in which Sir Simon Rattle and Alfred Brendel discuss Beethoven's Piano Concertos Nos. 2 and 3. Includes complete performances of piano sonatas by Haydn and Mozart and an Impromptu by Schubert.

TWO OUT OF THREE! For those of us who do not regularly have the opportunity to be in Europe, public broadcasters come to the rescue. Thanks to WFMT Fine Arts Network and WNED (I tune in to the Buffalo outlet) an all-Beethoven program from the 2001 Beethoven Festival in Bonn (although this program took place on Cologne’s huge Philharmonie) was broadcast yesterday. Pianist extraordinaire, Alfred Brendel, was the soloist in the G major concerto and easily program’s highlight. I have yet to hear this master in person but will remedy that omission in March when he visits the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra for performances of Mozart’s 25 th Piano Concerto (see below for further information). Anyone within flying/driving distance should be there. At seventy-one, there can’t be too many decades of superlative music-making left from this consummate artist.

    Alfred Brendel
Classical The great pianist Artur Schnabel once said that he was only interested in playing music that is better than he could ever perform it. His spiritual heir, both in terms of that vaunted philosophy and in repertoire, is Alfred Brendel. Brendel is a true classicist, one of the masters of our time, and the program for his recital at Verizon Hall comes from the heart of that world, with music of Mozart, Schubert and Beethoven. For all of the purity of his approach, the brilliance of Brendel lies in his ability to present this very familiar material with a spontaneity and attention to inner detail that goes to both the hearts and heads of modern audiences. Like Schnabel, Brendel seeks high beauty and wisdom in his music playing, but never fails to present thrilling pianism at the same time. It is incredible that the career of this ebullient artist now spans over a half century, more incredible still how rarely he has appeared on Philadelphia stages. Fri., March 26, 8 p.m., $28-$68, Kimmel Center, 300 S. Broad St., 215-893-1999.

Me of All People: Alfred Brendel in Conversation with Martin Meyer, by Alfred Brendel and Martin Meyer; translated by Richard Stokes. Cornell University Press (Sage House, 512 E. State St., Ithaca, NY 14850), 2002. 275 pp. $29.95. Among great pianists of the twentieth century, Alfred Brendel is truly unique. He was not a child prodigy, lacked excellent sight-reading skills and ceased formal piano study at age 16not ordinarily a recipe for success in today's competitive musical climate. Nevertheless, this unassuming pianist now is recognized as one of the world's foremost artists. In Me of All People readers get glimpses into the remarkable life of Brendel, the development of his career and his travels and his experiences as a young man in Vienna. Also highlighted are Brendel's views of the freedoms and obligations of a performer, the work of musicians who have fascinated him and his endeavors as poet and essayist. There are five chapters, all in dialogue format between Brendel and Martin Meyer. Meyer is literary editor of Neue Zureher Zeitung and author of several books on Ernst Junger and Thomas Mann. His grasp of aesthetics and skill as an interviewer help readers fathom the multiple facets of Brendel's personality. The result is an engaging portrait of this gifted pianist as a deep thinker, passionate skeptic and emotional musician with a charming sense of humor.

Brendel lifts Schubert classic above the efforts of others as Symphony Hall
    By Christian Kraus
    April 23, 2004 in Voices
Alfred Brendel is more than a pianist. Perhaps calling him a historical monument would go further in capturing his significance—however ordinary he may appear on stage and very much alive he still is. Brendel’s performances have not only enchanted audiences far and wide, they have also left an indelible mark on the history of music itself. Were one to single out his most lasting achievement, it would be his almost single-handed popularization of Schubert’s piano work since his pioneering recordings in the ’70s. There are others, too, of course: Alfred Schnabel recorded unforgettable, still-viable accounts of Schubert’s late sonatas as early as the late ’30s, and Wilhelm Kempff, the pianist to whose musical physiognomy Brendel comes closest, played the complete sonatas in the ’60s. Nonetheless, the fact that Schubert’s piano work is today universally admired and performed by almost every important pianist remains a consequence of Brendel’s passionate pleas, both in writing and recording. Some 70 years ago, Sergei Rachmaninoff, himself a famous pianist, could confess that he didn’t even know that Schubert had composed sonatas. We owe it to Brendel that such ignorance is no longer possible today.

When revered pianist Alfred Brendel strolls on stage, unhurriedly and always slightly bent forward, his age makes itself felt, as does his idiosyncrasy. Scoffers might compare him to the hunchback of Notre Dame, but with his 70-odd years he still commands a magisterial stage presence: withdrawn and introspective, mumbling to himself like the late Glenn Gould, at once intensely concentrated and supremely witty. C, D. 840 that stood out most. E-mail this article Permanent URL: http://maroon.uchicago.edu/voices/articles/2003/04/29/great_pianist_brende.php
