As he reaches the age of 70, he is now the most obvious successor in the long line of great European pianists such as Artur Schnabel and Wilhelm Kempff. This latest recording of live performances by Brendel of works he is credited with bringing to the fore of the piano repertoire is an aural testimony to his art. Brendel the Pianist Man and Mask ) to celebrate his 70th birthday, which will probably feature some footage of these live recordings. This documentary will be broadcast in January in the UK, and later on worldwide (dates to be confirmed).

Alfred Brendel and the Alban Berg String Quartett play Mozart
Pianist Alfred Brendel's and the Alban Berg String Quartet's live recording of Mozart's Concerto for Piano No. 12 in A-Major KV 385p is a joy to listen to. The Piano Quartet in E flat KV 493 is graceful and sparkling, dark where necessary, and full of Mozart's humour - it was written only weeks after he had completed the Nozze di Figaro . Alfred Brendel and the Alban Berg String Quartet scintillate. They masterfully render the spirit of the 18th-century. EMI, 2000. Get it from Amazon.com
The Alban Berg Quartett (ABQ) made their debut in 1971 at the Vienna Konzerthaus ( where they are now Honorary Members). They have their own concert series at the Vienna Konzerthaus, at the Royal Festival Hall London (where they are Associate Artists), at the Opera Zurich, at the Theatre des Champs-Elysées in Paris, at the Cologne Philharmonie and at the Alte Oper Frankfurt. The Alban Berg Quartett have been prolific recording artists and have received over thirty major international awards, including the Grand Prix du Disque, the Deutsche Schallplattenpreis, the Edison Prize, the first International Classical Music Award, the Japan Grand Prix and the Gramophone Magazine Award.

Legendary pianist Alfred Brendel has long been considered a philosopher-king among contemporary soloists, revered for his extraordinary ability to simultaneously convey both the emotional and intellectual content of the works he performs. An acclaimed author, poet, and literary expert on music as well, he is most renowned for his masterly interpretations of the music of Mozart, Haydn, Schubert, Schumann, Brahms, Liszt, and Beethoven and was the first pianist since Artur Schnabel to play all 32 Beethoven sonatas at Carnegie Hall, the first to have recorded all of Beethoven's piano compositions, and one of the very few to have recorded all of the Mozart piano concertos. Brendel is "a pianist's pianist," says the Vancouver Sun , "an intellectual, an analyst of music, a man not given to show, one who has defined what Mozart can and should sound like."

A tribute to Alfred Brendel on his 70th birthday
He is a philosopher among pianists, one who has explored the secrets behind the notes and the mysteries of the musical world: Alfred Brendel , who will be turning 70 on January 5, 2001. Unlike his nearly coeval colleague, the late Friedrich Gulda , Brendel is not an eccentric. Yet he, too, refuses to fit neatly into the classical-music industry. He has formulated his sometimes controversial but always fascinating insights into music in countless essays, many of which have been published in his books "Musical Thoughts and Afterthoughts" and "Music Sounded Out".
Of Austrian, German, Italian and Czech extraction, Alfred Brendel was born in Wiesenberg, Moravia, on January 5, 1931. Raised in the cultural atmosphere of the former Austro-Hungarian Empire, he began to take piano lessons at the age of six, and gave his first recital in Graz in 1948. The following year, he won the Busoni Competition in Bolzano, an event that marked the beginning of his professional career. Among his most important piano teachers were Paul Baumgartner, Edwin Fischer and Eduard Steuermann.
Brendel's imposing repertoire ranges from Bach to Schoenberg, although he is noted above all for his interpretations of Beethoven, Schubert, Haydn, Mozart and Liszt. He has always shown a pronounced predilection for performing and recording his favorite composers' works in complete cycles, such as the Beethoven piano sonatas, which he has played in their entirety many times during his career. His renderings of Schubert's works are among the most profound and intense of our time. And his Liszt interpretations have greatly contributed to wresting this composer from the purgatory of the misjudged and misunderstood composers.
