Jeraldine Saunders Herbison Andrey Kasparov Allan Blanc William Bolcom Jake Heggie Recital February 23, 2003 Reviews Lisa Coston , Oksana Lutsyshyn and Two Composers An art song recital and piano recital were combined into one program at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church in Virginia Beach, May 19, 2002. Two composers, Jeraldine Saunders Herbison and Andrey Kasparov, were in attendance to hear their compositions played by Oksana Lutsyshyn, a world-class performer, teacher and recording artist. She currently teaches at the Governor's School for the Arts and is music director and organist for this church. Her doctoral degree is from Moscow State Conservatory. After moving to the U.S. she was a Visiting Scholar at Indiana University in Bloomington. The program opened with two piano pieces by Herbison, who later commented that Lutsyshyn had found a way to shape her music that she had not known was in her piece. Certainly there were bell-like ringing tones in the piano that pleased this listener. Lisa Relaford Coston, mezzo-soprano, chose three songs on texts by American women composers, and caressed the musical lines with a warmth and energy rare on any stage. To a poem by Anne Bradstreet

An internationally celebrated interpreter of lieder, chamber music, and oratorio, she was equally acclaimed for her performances on the operatic stage. Her keen musicianship encompasses an astounding array of styles, from the Baroque of Bach and Handel to the varied idioms of today's leading composers. In recent seasons she has become a dedicated teacher, sharing her many talents and knowledge with today's emerging vocalists. The California-born soprano has held the spotlight since she won the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions. A long association with the Metropolitan Opera began with Miss Valente's debut in 1973 as Pamina in . Well, that is exactly what happened to Van Cliburn, the tall Texan, when he won the First (ever) Tchaikovsky Piano Competition in Moscow in 1958. A virtual unknown on Russian soil, he was soon to be the favourite going into the finals. The Russians were shocked but not surprised for Cliburn possessed charm, charisma, stature and not forgetting good technique. Practically every major classical recording star has won a major competition, Martha Argerich - the Chopin Competition; Vladimir Ashkenazy - 2nd Tchaikovsky Competition 1962; Murray Perahia - Leeds Piano Competition; Kristian Zimmerman - Chopin Competition and the list goes on and on. In fact it is now a great belief that one needs a major competition to bolster one's career. Major competitions like the Leeds, the Arthur Rubinstein Competition, Tchaikovsky and Chopin Competitions give the winners major career breakthroughs, with engagements at various major halls and festivals, recording contracts with major labels like DG, EMI or Teldec (who can normally afford the crème de la crème). Hernandez, age 18, is a senior at North Eugene High School. He began piano lessons at age 5. During the concert, he will perform Bach's Prelude and Fugue No. 21 in B-Flat Major, Beethoven's "Appassionata" Sonata, Chopin's Mazurka in F Major, Liszt's Hungarian Rhapsody No. 6, Rachmani-noff's Prelude in G Minor, Gershwin's Prelude No. 1 and a rag by William Bolcom. He recently acted as the principal musician for productions in "Jesus Christ Superstar" at North Eugene High School. Hernandez will attend Harvard University in the fall to pursue a degree in government and music. I first heard him perform his own 12 Etudes for Piano in the early 1960s at Tanglewood, and have been an avid follower of his career through numerous stage works and awards, including a Pulitzer Prize, since then. Malfitano at Tully Announced as Catherine Malfitano's accompanist for a varied program at Alice Tully Hall November 26, he unfortunately had to cancel. Chicago Lyric Opera Assistant Conductor Robert Tweten filled in instead, in a program of Rodrigo, Barber, Satie, Poulenc, Weill, and Bolcom - with Gershwin's "My Man's Gone Now" as an audacious second encore. All, the singer noted from the stage, were written in the 20th century, including the delightful "Three Songs" of Satie, written in 1916 (not 1887 as misnoted on the program). Bolcom is writing for her both a role (Beatrice) in his new opera ( A View from the Bridge , after the play by Arthur Miller, to be premiered in Chicago in fall, 1999) and a new song cycle ("on a mythical figure whose name begins with M - and it's not Malfitano!" - she asked that no more than that about the new work be revealed), with collaborator Arnold Weinstein, to be premiered in 2000, in English, though translations have already been made of the text into Italian and German. For this concert, she gave the professional premiere of his 1978 "Mary," on a William Blake text.

The Complete Rags for Piano ( Albany TROY 325/26) Jazz/ Klassik Ragtime Gunther Schuller Scott Joplin und Eubie Blake gegeben hatte, welche eine Musik namens Ragtime geschrieben hatte, die damals aber schon längst vergessen war. Schuller & Co gruben in den Archiven und brachten die Ragtimemusik wieder ans Licht, sie führten sie auf, ließen sie drucken, und das führte zur Renaissance des Ragtime, vornehmlich über die Filmmusik von " Der Clou ", zu der einige Gunther-Schuller-Einspielungen den Anstoß gegeben haben. Einige junge Komponisten machten sich damals den Spaß, neue Ragtimes zu schreiben, William Albright und William Bolcom schickten einander ankomponierte Ragtimes per Post zum Fertigstellen, so wie andere Leute Schachprobleme austauschen. So haben sich im Werkverzeichnis von William Bolcom mittlerweile 22 ganz entzückende, neu komponierte Ragtimes angesammelt, darunter ganz entzückende Dinger, zum Beispiel eine "Rag Fantasy" namens "The Serpent's Kiss", in dem der Pianist zu pfeifen beliebt, oder ein "Slow Two-Step" namens "Tabby Cat Walk", mit einem verblüffenden Ende.
