Wilhelm Kempf: Majestic poet

G REAT PIANISTS
Christopher Breunig reappraises the unique artistry of celebrated German virtuoso, Wilhelm Kempff
His face fills the screen. You notice the shaving cut on his cheek, the skin pigmentation dots that come with old age. Listening intently, sometimes he glances down; just as often he’s looking up, much as a man might watching the circling of gulls over the sea’s edge. When the music moves into more adventurous harmonies, an expression almost of concern crosses Kempff’s face. The medium, of course, is the DVD: a carrier of increasing, repeatable delight to the pianophile as archive material comes into the public domain. (Who could forget, for instance, the historic clip of Horowitz’s hands, uniquely curved, flickering over the keys – part of Warner’s Art of Piano?)
Beethoven was central to his art: the Hammerklavier won him the Mendelssohn Prize as a student of Heinrich Barth (also Artur Rubinstein’s teacher); he played the Fourth Concerto under Nikisch when making his Berlin Philharmonic debut in 1918; the Ecossaise, WoO86, and C major Bagatelle, Op.33 No.5, were his first recordings, made in Berlin in 1920, where apparently he mutters ‘Donnerwetter!’ after a finger-slip in Op.33. He began to record the sonatas on shellac from 1929, later completing two LP cycles, mono and stereo, for Deutsche Grammophon, but his 78rpm sets lacked Nos.3, 11, 13, 15, 17 and 28. The instruments were by Bechstein and Grotrian-Steinweg.

I have to precise that I am quite well informed about Brahms’ works! I have more than 80 Cds of Brahms Music, among the others all his piano music, all concertos, all symphonies, all chamber music, all lieder, many Choral works, his Deutsche Requiem and many more. I know his biography truly good! And because I am a pianist, I have not only listen him but also played.
At first, I have heard from everyone, how Brahms was great! And, many times I have declared how Brahms was great indeed even before I have listened to him!
Than, I have decided to get his piano music played by IDIL BIRET. She plays it quite well. But is not a matter of interpretation (I have got also Brahms played by Kempff, Argherich, Ashke,…) but of Music itself.

"Opus 1" MUSIC: Beethoven: beginning of Beethoven: played by Isaac Stern, Eugene Istomin and Leonard Rose [Sony Classical SM2K 64510, disc 1, track 20]
Welcome to Compact Discoveries . I'm your guide, Fred Flaxman. The music in the background is the beginning of the Trio for Piano, Violin and Cello in E-flat, Opus 1, Number 1 by Ludwig van Beethoven. The performance is by Isaac Stern, violinist; Leonard Rose on cello and pianist Eugene Istomin. The reason I'm beginning this hour with this particular work is because it is Beethoven's opus one, and "Opus 1" is the theme for this program. The word "opus" is Latin for "work." It is used in English to indicate a literary or musical work or composition. Although you might talk about a book being the author's first opus, books are not given an opus number the way musical compositions are. Opus 1 usually indicates the composer's first published work, not the first work he composed. An author's first book is sometimes his best work or the book he is most known for. It is sometimes his or her only book. In the case of musical compositions, it is rare that the composer's first published work is his best or most well-known composition. And I can't think of any classical composer who wrote just one piece of music which was published and became famous - the musical equivalent of Margaret Mitchell's
