21. Chopin:The Complete Music For Piano Solo And For Piano With Orchestra
Tackling Chopin en masse is a formidable challenge even for as voracious a pianist as idil biret, who busies herself with tiny projects like the Beethoven

CHOPIN: The Complete Music for Piano Solo and for Piano with Orchestra
Naxos 8.501501 (15 CDs for the price of 10)
In the realm of Romantic piano composers, Chopin enjoys unmatched staying power. The majority of his mature works have been repertoire staples from the time they were composed, and likely will remain so as long as pianists walk the earth.
Most of Chopin's output is concentrated within small forms, where his genius truly takes wing. His Polish inheritance is reflected in the heroic Polonaises and incredibly varied Mazurkas. The Waltzes, Nocturnes, and Impromptus reveal the influence of Bellini's bel canto melodic filigree along with the air of the Paris salons where Chopin held court. The more complex and personal works, however, embody a strong classical streak. These include the Ballades, the Fantasy, the Polonaise-Fantasie, the Second and Third Sonatas, the Scherzos, the Op. 28 Preludes, and the sublime Berceuse and Barcarolle. If the Etudes represent the New Testament of piano technique, the composer's youthful Rondos, Variations, and sundry occasional pieces reveal that Chopin's pianistic style was pretty much solidified from an early age.
Naxos' engineering takes on a metallic hue at loud moments, yet is more consistent than the uneven, tubby sonics hampering much of Ashkenazy's competing cycle on Decca. The latter and Nikita Magaloff's complete Chopin for Philips (both omitting the concerted works) are packaged in space saving cardboard, as opposed to the these individual jewel boxes housed in a thin box. No single pianist can do equal justice to all of these works, yet Biret's stimulating and often masterly artistry is well worth the modest cost of 15 budget CDs for the price of 10.

Born in Hamburg, the son of a double-bass player and his older seamstress wife, Brahms attracted the attention of Schumann, to whom he was introduced by the violinist Joachim, and after Schumann's death he maintained a long friendship with his widow, the pianist Clara Schumann, whose advice he always valued. Brahms eventually settled in Vienna, where to some he seemed the awaited successor to Beethoven. His blend of classicism in form with a romantic harmonic idiom made him the champion of those opposed to the musical innovations of Wagner and Liszt. In Vienna he came to occupy a position similar to that once held by Beethoven, his gruff idiosyncrasies tolerated by those who valued his genius.

With Classical 101, we introduce music fans to key composers and performers, important stylistic movements, and milestone recordings in the history of classical music. Here Amazon's Ted Libbey introduces the quintessential romanticism of Frederic Chopin (1810-1849), the most beloved poet of the piano. And you can access an audio tour and essay on Chopin's works HERE
Frederic Chopin, An Iron Will In September 1831, at the end of an exhausting journey through war-torn Europe, a 21-year-old Polish pianist arrived in Paris. His name, Frederic Chopin, would soon become known to the entire city, and before long would be celebrated wherever music was heard, but the young man started out with little more than his talent, a few letters of recommendation, and an iron will to succeed. Indeed, for years people assumed there was some sort of cosmic connection between Chopin's determination to make a name for himself and the fact that he had been born in the village outside Warsaw of Zelazowa Wola, whose name was sometimes translated as "Iron Will." In fact, Zelazowa Wola was plain old "Ironville."

Idil Biret has recorded the complete solo works of Chopin, Rachmaninov and Brahms, and has been roundly praised for these massive cycles. In general, she has adopted an interpretive persona that favors plumbing the depths for expressive yield rather than remaining on the surface with a straightforward approach to allow the music to speak for itself. Thus, both her Brahms readings are weighty, rich-toned affairs that aim for grandeur and muscle in the later effort and for tragedy and consolation the D minor First. What is of equal importance here is that the underrated Antoni Wit abets Biret with conducting quite in sympathy with her view. The Polish Orchestra may not be world class but it plays with commitment and spirit throughout. Biret's D minor is one of the best current versions of the work available. The Rubinstein/Reiner on RCA is a classic for its sense of drama and tragedy and for the pianist's ability to deftly shift from the life-and-death issues of the first two movements to the sunnier world of the finale. But Biret yields little to Rubinstein, catching the youthful grimness and Classical language of the concerto with an unerring interpretive sense. For half the cost of the somewhat inflexible Brendel/Abbado on Philips, you get a fiery performance here that is among the finest. Andsnes/Rattle on EMI is also excellent, but costlier, too.

I cannot tell you how many evenings of pleasure this recording has given me. From the opening duet between horn and piano I knew I was in for a special experience. After comparisons with other recordings I now rate this as the finest I have ever heard. My references include: Richter with Leinsdorf and the Chicago Symphony on RCA (nla), Moravic with Belohlavek and the Czech Phil on Supraphon, Gilels and Joachim with the Berlin Philharmonic on DG and Barenboim with Barbirolli and the Vienna Philharmonic on EMI Forte. The orchestra is superb. The opening brings to mind Steinberg's story in his book The Concerto . "'Dream Mr. X,' I once heard a conductor say to his solo horn as they were about to begin a rehearsal of this concerto." (116) The author goes on to say that this soloist should be able to "muse".* The burnished horn player here made me think I was listening to the Vienna Philharmonic. I wish that Naxos had credited her/him as they did the solo cellist, Zdzislaw Lapinski. His (her?) playing offers other details that set this recording apart from the others. The recording is simply the best of the lot. The main thing that strikes me is the perfect balance, or relief as Stokowski called it, between the orchestra and piano. In the other recordings the orchestra is distant, in the case of the Richter and Leinsdorf it sounds like the orchestra is out in the hall. Add to that the fact that the conductor is self effacing to the point where the music is dull. The Gilels is better balanced but still misses some details in the orchestra and Joachim, while not as mundane as Leinsdorf, always impressed me as not much more than a Kapellmeister beating time. The Czech Philharmonic is one of the finest in the world, but they are so distantly recorded that it would be hard to find evidence in this recording to support that assertion. Barbirolli turns in a fine orchestral performance but Barenboim seems to lumber his way through it, pounding the piano instead of playing it.
