Bernstein, Leonard (1918-1990)
page: Throughout the 1960s, Leonard Bernstein was undoubtedly the most visible proponent of classical music in American culture. Through his outgoing personality and resourceful uses of the media, particularly television, Bernstein introduced "highbrow" culture into the homes of middle America, while also defending rock and roll as "real" music and espousing radical causes. Given his overwhelming celebrity and acclaim as a composer, conductor, pianist, and lecturer, the meteoric career of this son of Russian Jewish immigrants would seem to exemplify the all-American success story; yet, for most of his life, the specter of the closet lurked threateningly behind the glamorous and often brash public image of Leonard Bernstein. Sponsor Message.
Born in Lawrence, Massachusetts, on August 25, 1918, Bernstein studied at Harvard University, the Curtis Institute, and the Berkshire Music Center at Tanglewood, where he came to the attention of maestro Serge Koussevitzky, who mentored the early stages of his career.

Leonard Bernstein: Jewish America's Favorite (Musical) Son
A celebrated American composer, conductor, teacher, and pianist who infused his work with his Jewish heritage
By Marsha Bryan Edelman
Excerpted with permission from Discovering Jewish Music Jewish Publication Society American audiences of all backgrounds swelled with pride as Leonard Bernstein (1918-1990) became the first native son to overcome the European hegemony over conducting positions with ranking world orchestras. Bernstein was only 26 when he captured America's heartand respectby stepping into the breach created by an ailing Bruno Walter and leading the New York Philharmonic Orchestra in a critically acclaimed concert. The previously anonymous, young assistant conductor was catapulted by that success into a career unprecedented in the history of Western music of any sort. Excelling in every venue he touched, Bernstein won praise as a conductor, pianist, teacher, and composer of a wide variety of musical forms. Bernstein's musical successes were as much a personal victory for him as they were a source of vicarious accomplishment for America. Bernstein had pursued his musical education over the strong objections of his father, who had urged him toward more conservative pursuits. Interestingly, despite (initially) frustrating his parents with his career choice, he did observe one important family tradition: The Jewish heritage that had been inculcated in him from his youth remained an important aspect of his personal and musical identity.

Leonard Bernstein
Leonard Bernstein was a performer, a conductor, and a composer. His parents, Sam and Jennie Bernstein, who were of Russian-Jewish heritage, were not musicians. When Leonard was ten years old, he became fascinated with the piano, and asked his father if he could have lessons. Mr. Bernstein, who at first was not happy about the idea, said yes. Leonard practiced all the time and learned so fast that his teacher said he was a genius. Every spare minute he practiced the piano, listened to music, or tried to write his own music.
Leonard Bernstein began his college career at Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts. While a student there, he met a famous conductor, Dimitri Mitropoulos. Mitropoulos was very impressed with Bernstein, and suggested that he become a conductor too. Bernstein went on to study at the Curtis Institute of Music, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. At Curtis, Bernstein studied piano, conducting, and composing.
During the summer, Bernstein went to the Tanglewood Music Festival in Lenox, Massachusetts. There he met famous composers such as Aaron Copland , as well as conductors such as Serge Koussevitsky, who helped Bernstein with his career, and Artur Rodzinski, who later became conductor of the New York Philharmonic.
