1. Notes On Franz Schubert By Pianist Bart Berman
pianist bart berman presents a brief biography, answers to questions, analysis of selected piano duets and the unfinished sonatas, plus links and a discography.
http://www.geocities.com/Vienna/1938/schubert.htm
Schubert biography by Bart Berman Franz Schubert (1797-1828) never achieved widespread fame during his lifetime , though he inspired intense loyalty and affection. The conventional schoolmaster, who was his father, did not include musicianship in his list of suitable professions, and Franz was prevented from becoming a child prodigy pianist-composer like Mozart Yet the consummate composer Schubert, from his 18th year onward ( Erlkönig ) tried hard to succeed. Wholeheartedly or not, he imitated Rossini's immensely popular style in his music to Rosamunde . He wrote a variety of choral works intended to win him support among the broad public of music lovers. And, encouraged by his friends, he wrote operas which, despite their excellent music, missed theatricality to make them stage worthy. Far from being an ivory tower composer, he sought to please those who for who his creations were made be they chamber music players, talented amateur singers, or the average concert-goer. Even the beloved piano impromptus need not give an impression of personal confessions, but, at most, that of a compromise between a genre not exclusively originating with Schubert

Bart Berman, pianist " He is the quintessential musician's musician ... one of the premier Schubert interpreters of our era." American Record Guide "His performance ... revealed a mature artist at the height of interpretive powers ... a deep felt identification with the style projects an impression of speaking intimately with friends of things brave, awesome and beautiful." Jerusalem Post "Berman, who proved himself earlier on the same stage as a tremendous Schubert interpreter, showed a striking affinity with the contemporary idiom, and moreover, with the amazingly different dialects of which the idiom consists." Volkskrant Bart Berman, an internationally acclaimed concert pianist with a wide-ranging classical repertoire, is best known for his interpretations of Franz Schubert and contemporary music. A student of Jaap Spaanderman at the Amsterdam Academy of Music, he graduated with a Piano Soloist and a Piano Teacher degree, both with distinctions, as well as the Dutch Prize of Excellence for soloists. Bart Berman, discography At large, Bart Berman's discography reflects his specialization in Franz Schubert and modern music performance. Among his CDs and records solo albums, many piano duo performances (with Sara Fuxon in “Duo Beer Sheva”and with Meir Wiesel in “Duo 4”), as well as with various other artists, occasionaly as a member of larger ensembles. Table 1 contains all of Bart Berman's 14 audio units. When a picture appears in the leftmost column it is indicated that the unit appeared on CD, and likewise the right column indicates an analogue (long play record or audio tape) publication. Many of Bart Berman's records were re-issued on CD. In this case, there will be pictures in both columns.
While some of the titles are easy to find at larger (web-)music distributors, others were made by specialized companies, whom at times published the CD or record in a limited quantity. At this site only links to Amazon Books and CDNow Geocities ' favorite retailers) were established. The links are given for the convenience of the reader of this page and do not imply a preference of the site manager, or an offer to buy products. CDs offered by by Amazon and CDNow are also offered by other retailers. The Frank Martin CD is widely offered by web-retailers but not by Geocities' favorites. In cases of hard to find audio units I have left my email as a reference, and will try to find a copy of the CD or LP when requested. Table 1: Bart Berman's disocgraphy sorted by music period

9. Bart Berman, Composition
Before deciding whether to become primarily a composer or a pianist, bart berman composed mostly chamber music and for theater.
http://www.geocities.com/Vienna/1938/composit.htm
Bart Berman, composition "Though Schubert composed only the first two movements of the massive, disturbing and philosophical Reliquary Sonata (D 840), you’d never know it from Berman’s reading. This is not so much a completion as it is a fulfillment of the composer’s intentions, insofar as it captures and extends the work’s virulent, if truncated syncopes and urgent recitations ." American Record Guide Bart Berman studied composition with Bertus van Lier at the Music Academy of Amsterdam and with Wouter van den Berg, next to his studies in piano performance. Before deciding whether to become primarily a composer or a pianist, Bart Berman composed mostly chamber music and for theater. These works were performed by the Eindhoven Philips Theater and the string quartet and orchestra of the Amsterdam Academy of Music. Since performance gained the upper hand, Bart Berman composed mostly for piano . His later works include many originals as well completions, second piano parts, cadenzas and arrengements to existing music. Among the latter Endings to all Schubert's Unfinished Sonatas, Cadenzas for all piano concerti by Haydn, Mozart and Beethoven and a Second Piano Part for Six Sonatinas by Clementi. In his later works, Berman combined his composition experience, with his pianistic views and expertise in many styles of classical music. They were performed, published and recorded in the Netherlands, Israel and the US.
