En dat het a priori al als grootse gebeurtenis wordt gevierd. Helaas loopt dat vaak op teleurstellingen uit want in de loop der jaren is heel wat inferieur moois van de Italiaanse beroemdheid verschenen. Volgens die legende was er decennia lang in de pianistenwereld niet één kunstenaar die zodanig nar schoonheid streefde (en die ook wist te bereiken) als Michelangeli. Fameus waren zijn scrupules, zijn wantrouwen jegens eigen prestaties, zijn wens om het hoogst bereikbare lang en grondig voor te bereiden, nooit iets onbezonnen te wagen en de vleugel tot een vehikel van pure welluidendheid te maken. Michelangeli’s pianistiek had de reputatie ongeëvenaard te zijn qua techniek. Maar was hij ook een communicatief kunstenaar? Hooguit als de muziek in kwestie een snaar in zijn ziel raakte.
