A professional pianist can perform solo pieces, play with an orchestra or smaller ensemble, or accompany one or more singers or solo instrumentalists. A performing classical pianist usually starts playing piano at a very young age, some as early as three years old. Many well-known classical composers were able pianists themselves; for example, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Ludwig van Beethoven, Franz Liszt, Frederic Chopin, Robert Schumann, and Sergei Rachmaninov were all virtuoso pianists. Some pianists have special preferences as to which composer's music they play.

He could be impulsive and willful and sometimes edited the music to suit his interpretation. But he also conveyed deep concentration and communion with the spirit of the composer. Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli
Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli was born at Orzinuovi, a small town near Brescia, Italy, on January 5, 1920. His father, Giuseppe Benedetti Michelangeli, formerly a lawyer, used to play piano, and gave his son Arturo his first music lessons when the child was but three years old. His mother taught him to read and write. His love for his father was as deep as discrete. During a period when he was ill, Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli, together with other fellow students at the Musical Institute in Brescia, used to travel to a distant restaurant by bicycle where they entertained the clientele in order to make some money and help Benedetti Michelangeli's father. When his parents found out that, his father scolded him angrily, repeating that those were not things to do, and that Arturo had to think only about studying. He was around 14. In Brescia, at the Musical Institute, he also met his future wife, Giuliana Guidetti.
Musical studies
Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli began to receive regular music lessons at the age of four, at the Musical Institute ``Venturi'' in Brescia, with Paolo Chimeri. At the age of five, he took part in the annual concert together with other pupils from the school. He wore a short skirt, the way children used to do by that time. When he appeared on the stage, he stood up motionless in front of the piano stool for a few seconds, then, without saying a word, he went back behind the scenes. Everybody thought he was afraid, and they pushed him back on the stage. But young Arturo retired a second, then a third more time, without speaking, until someone eventually understood that he just needed some help to raise up on the stool, still too high for him. Then, he began to play quietly, perfectly at his own ease.

  • A brief biography
    Reviewers on Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli
from Storia del pianoforte, by Piero Rattalino, Il Saggiatore, Milano, 1988 (pp. 328-329) [...] Unlike Arrau, who fixes the range of dynamics within a homogeneous timbric field, Benedetti Michelangeli has at his disposeal, like Gieseking, like Horowitz, like Richter, a quite rich timbric palette, which he does not employ for purposes of stylistic definition, but to build the structure through the timbre. One may even compare Benedetti Michelangeli's style to Messiaen's postulates, such is his exactness in the choice of the timbre, fixed by him not only as a colour which orientates the listener's perception, but as a value per se. In that sense are to be intended the legendary cares which Benedetti Michelangeli poses in preparing his instrument, which gave rise to so many anectodes . We had put forward the hypothetical idea that the piano prepared by Cage could mime in a negative sense the preparations made by some performers, and we have haply also jokingly said that eventually the employment of sophisticated devices in Stockhausen's

Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli
Michelangeli began playing Mozart Concertos as early as 1947. His favorite Concertos are nos. 13, 15, 20, 23, and 25. Performance from the 1950s are typically ethos-oriented and lack 'passion'. Michelangeli appears studious and is a student of sport in his studio recording with EMI (EMI References CDH 7 63819 2). The Concerto no. 15 (Lugano 21 June 1956) is exemplary and outstandingly illustrative with regard to phenomenon that is created by the ethos-orented process (same can be said to Milan 1947). A theme associated with nos. 13 and 15 is that of structure. Rome 15 December 1951 eschews emotion but effectively generates more themes. Here the portrait of heaven has a different meaning. Rather than constructing it inside out, an emotional loop runs the course fully aware of its presence outside. Naples 29 November 1953 an exercise of assiduity and close attendance: a studio performance here can be seen as material that has fully materialized before a note being juxtaposed. It flatly outlines every element, siting more the reason than erudition or technical wizardry.* Brecia 25 May 1968 offers many surprises: Michelangeli really runs away with this performance: brief in voicing, the chordal passages an outstretched infinitude. 1990 Hamburg is serenely ontological and effects persistence and air of categorical neutrality. Concerto no. 20 and no. 25 (Brema, June 9, 1989) are uniquely affecting. One can imagine a theater piece in which an orator speaks without using any kind of amplification. A singer sustains a note without suffering pitch distortion and runs out of breath before the note finishes its duration. The performer never runs out of gas when needs climb. One can imagine a swimmer, at the end of 200 meter butterfly, with tired arms, all dragging, out of energy. Not here. Magnificent landscape and splendor emerge in the process.

If you play piano, or if you like concerts of piano, buy it! It's really fantastic. The liszt's totentanz it's simply uncredible. He played another "metamorphosis" of a valse by Johann Strauss. I've never seen nothing similar, it's really "animal". Another point is that I know Mr. Freire and, I don't know why, he doesn't like recording. The few freire's recordings is saved in concert. So, this is unique, fabulous recording. I repeat: just buy it! Rare vintage Freire: Aren't those people in Paris lucky. Not only do they live in the most beautiful city on earth, but they are also about the only ones that can catch a glimpse of this great pianist nowadays. Fortunately, there is this disc set. Both in repertoire, technique and artistry Freire belongs to a small and highly select group of musicians. Mozart in refined perfection. Liszt performed in a way that makes you fear that the end of times will soon be upon us. Schumann and Chopin served equally well. Last but not least... more info A Pianist's Pianist:
