Known best for his stints in Woody Herman's thundering First Herd and in pianist Lennie Tristano's alternative jazz ensembles, Bauer is one of the few jazz guitarists of his generation to avoid the influence of Charlie Christian and he is considered by many as a major living link in the evolution of jazz guitar. "One of the things I did was that I 'comped' with the ensembles and bands," said Bauer, 87, from his second-story teaching studio in Albertson, NY, on Long Island. "Not that what I did was never done before. It was, but not to that extent. The basic thing is that I was so dumb that I would blend with whomever I played with. I played with Dixieland groups, swing groups, modern jazz groups, even Irish musical groups. I played with every kind of combination you can think of. Before he died, (trumpeter) Charlie Shavers told me that he liked the way I backed him up. Even (drummer) Max Roach said the same thing. I blend well. I'm not trying to cut them."

Reality is not so simple, however. Certainly the very most important of the music's innovators are those whose names are known by all Armstrong Parker Young Coltrane . Unfortunately, the jazz critic's tendency to inflate the major figures' status often comes at the expense of other musicians' reputations men and women who have made significant, even essential, contributions of their own, are, for whatever reason, overlooked in the mad rush to canonize a select few. Lennie Tristano is one of those who have not yet received their critical due. In the mid-'40s, the Chicago-born pianist arrived on the scene with a concept that genuinely expanded the prevailing bop aesthetic. By JOHN HENKEN S ummarizing the work of a composer as vigorously curious as Aurelio de la Vega is not easy. Serialism and pantonality, Cuban dance rhythms and chance operations, graphic notation and electronic tape, all have interested De la Vega, and have come together in a powerful and idiosyncratic musical personality. Somewhat to the composer's surprise, however, his collected music for solo piano seems satisfyingly to sum up his evolution, particularly regarding harmonic language and general stylistic stance. That body of music10 works from 1944 to 1987will be played by Martha Marchena this afternoon at Cal State Northridge, where De la Vega was on the faculty for 34 years. "I have never heard these pieces all played together," De la Vega says, before Marchena played the same program three weeks ago at the University of Miami. "I am not easy to please and I hear my music very objectively in performance, but this was very satisfactory. The impact was profoundkind of a canvas of 50 years of music. She really takes it seriously, and the results were beyond my imagination."
