Book Search Harold Bauer Autobiography
By Jim Edwards
A friend from England is coming over this late summer and wanted me to find a book for him. I have a copy in my library and a most interesting book it is indeed. It is the autobiography of violinist turned pianist, Harold Bauer. The title is Harold Bauer, His Book and was published by W. W. Norton in l948 (306 pages). If anyone out there has a copy for sale please let me know. Bauer as most of you know is intimately connected to reproducing piano rolls and performances of piano roll concertos with live orchestras. I am interested in buying rolls, player piano literature, and photographs of pianists. Let me hear from you. Jim Edwards

Trying to reach UHF? Our contact page tells you how to find us. Founded in the 1970's, Klavier was originally set up to record keyboard music of a special type. In the early part of the century, famous pianists had "recorded" their performances on the reproducing piano, a high-tech version of the player piano. A reproducing piano was set up in a concert hall, and recorded in modern stereo. Conventional classical recordings followed. A number of these recordings were done by Keith O. Johnson, who would later make Reference Recordings famous. Today's Klavier is making modern classical recordings, however, sometimes with some of the world's finest artists. Remember...all of the recordings on this list are recommended by UHF. Records shown in red are used by UHF Magazine in its tests of audio equipment.

    CHRONOLOGY OF PAU CASALS
Pau Casals aged twenty-three He settles in Paris and begins his career as soloist. He begins to enter the social, musical and cultural world of turn-of-the-century Paris. Casals and the pianist Harold Bauer begin to play together in early summer. They give concerts in San Sebastián and at the Teatro de la Comedia in Madrid, among others. In November, Casals makes his first journey to the United States aboard the "Sant Paul" to make a tour with the singer Emma Nevada, the pianist Léon Moreau and the flautist Daniel Marquesi. While he is staying in San Francisco, he has an accident to his left hand on an excursion to Mount Tamalpais, which forces him to abandon the tour. For some months he lives in the house of Michael Stein and begins a long friendship with his daughter and son Gertrude and Leo Stein. Queen Maria Cristina awards him the "Gran Cruz de Caballero de la Real Orden de Carlos III". On 3 May he begins a tour of South America with Harold Bauer and Moreira de Sá. He makes his second trip to the United States, this time as soloist.
