The new trustees are the Rev. Canon Lucinda Rawlings Laird, rector of St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church in Louisville, and Vance Blade, assistant distribution manager for The Kroger Company’s Louisville Division. Both will assume six-year terms, Laird beginning in May and Blade in October. The election and renovation approvals resulted at the Board’s Feb. 26 meeting. Rev. Canon Laird served as rector of St. Mark’s Church in Teaneck, N.J. and held several other positions in the Diocese of Newark before assuming her present post. Serinus EMI recording artist Awadagin Pratt, 37, is a rare phenomenon a multi-talented musician and conductor whose race, casual appearance, dreadlocks, and first name Awadagin (pronounced ah-wah-DAH-jin, named for a friend of his father’s who was born in Sierra Leone) attract as much attention as his considerable artistry. To Pratt, however, race is almost beside the point. While he well understands that the paucity of African-American concert artists is a subject deserving attention, and has experienced his unfair share of housing discrimination and police harassment (including an unjustified night in the Baltimore jail, which ended when the administration at Peabody Institute where he was a student contacted the State Attorney’s Office and demanded his release), he considers his race and appearance ancillary to his musicianship. I conducted a series of phone and e-mail exchanges with Pratt shortly before he gave a March 2003 performance of Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 3 in C minor, Op. 37 with the Hartford Symphony. This was followed by an April 3 stint as both conductor and pianist with the New Mexico Symphony.

Mezzo soprano Denyce Graves, jazz French horn player Vincent Chancey and award-winning pianist Leon Bates will make musical magic on the Southern Illinois University Carbondale campus this semester as part of the School of Music's annual concert program. Graves, whom USA Today predicted likely would become "an operatic superstar of the 21st century," will sing at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 14, in Shryock Auditorium. Chancey, sideman to Sun Ra, Richard Abrams, Lester Bowie, David Murray and others, will play with a jazz ensemble at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 10, in the Old Baptist Foundation Recital Hall. Bates, known here and abroad for his performances of the works of the romantic composers, will play Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto No. 2 in C Minor with the Southern Illinois Symphony at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 30, in Shryock Auditorium. The season-opening contemporary dance concerts Sept. 7 and 8 feature guest artists Monica Bill-Barnes, Carli Mareneck and Alan Arnett as well as JMU’s own faculty Suzanne Miller-Corso, Shane O’Hara, Cynthia Thompson and Kate Trammell. JMU performers also will be featured in two other dance concerts and JMU theater productions and in School of Music concerts by the JMU Wind Symphony, Jazz Ensemble, Jazz Band, Symphony Orchestra and Chorale. "This year's winners have made outstanding contributions to Pennsylvania's arts legacy," Gov. Ridge said. "Each has his or her own distinct talents, but together they represent what continues to be one of the finest arts communities in the world right here in Pennsylvania." The crowd at the Allentown Symphony Hall were treated to a performance by Bates and 19-year old Curtis Institute-trained pianist Lang Lang. Bates is a native of Philadelphia. Since winning the Philadelphia Orchestra Senior Auditions as a student more than 20 years ago, Bates has emerged as one of America's leading pianists. Although he has performed a dozen times with orchestras in Carnegie Hall, he made his Carnegie Hall recital debut in 2000-01. Also receiving awards were WHYY radio and its president/CEO William J. Marrazzo. The public radio station is famous for producing Fresh Air with Terry Gross. The station’s latest initiative, "Philadelphia Performs!" came from an investigation of ways to collaborate with institutions across the Delaware Valley.

There were some prodigies­Ellen Ballon in Montreal and Mona Bates in Toronto­who turned into patrons or pedagogues. André Mathieu, alas, became a drunk. It is interesting to note that the multi talented Sir Ernest MacMillan, who trained as an organist and busied himself mainly as a conductor, visited Rudolf Serkin in Vermont and was told by the master that he played piano "like a very good pianist who hasn't kept up his practice." Still, Gould is obviously in a league of his own. I like his interpretations of Scriabin, which sound emotionally spontaneous as well as brilliant in the usual Gould ways.
