Artist Series to sponsor 'Gershwin Party' tonight
KYLE MARSHALL DM Senior Staff Writer In the beginning of his biography of George Gershwin, Rodney Greenburg writes that Gershwin was the "most charismatic of a handful of 20th century composers who liberated American music."
And if you want to hear some Gershwin, you've got an opportunity tonight. As part of the Artist Series, "A Gershwin Party," featuring pianist Leon Bates, soprano Louise Toppin and tenor William Brown, will perform in Fulton Chapel at 8 p.m. Tickets can be obtained at the Central Ticket Office and cost $8 for adults, $5 for children and $3 for students.
Dr. Robert Riggs, chair of the music department and the Artist Series, said that "A Gershwin Party" was chosen for several reasons to be a part of this year's Artist Series. First of all, he has seen Leon Bates perform.
"I was very impressed with the way he established a rapport with the audience" Riggs said. "Moreover, they were touring in February, which is Black History Month."
According to the biographies released by the management company of Bates, Toppin and Brown, all have performed in many places. Bates is described as "a familiar figure on the international concert scene" who has played with the New York Philharmonic, in Switzerland and in Rome, to choose just a few. Toppin has performed as a solo recitalist, orchestra soloist and has had leading roles in operas "throughout the United States" and in Spain, said her biography. Brown has been in performances "spanning the globe" a soloist for the New York Philharmonic and the Helsinki Orchestra as well as performing with the Florintine Opera Company.
