(15 - 11 - 1942, Buenos Aires) Barenboim, whose parents were both piano teachers, gave his first concert at the age of seven. In 1951 his family, which was later to settle in Israel, returned to Europe. At the age of ten, he gave piano recitals in Vienna and Salzburg. Later he met Edwin Fischer (from whom he took lessons) and Wilhelm Furtwängler. He took conducting lessons from Igor Markevich, and perfected his conducting under Nadia Boulanger. 1955 saw his debut in London under Josef Krips. Six years later he began his career as a conductor, first of all in Israel and then in Austria. In 1964 he played for the first time with the English Chamber Orchestra, performing all Piano Concertos by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart in London, Paris and New York. In 1967 he married the cello player, Jacqueline du Pre. In 1973 he conducted a performance of «Don Giovanni» in Edinburgh, and in 1975 he conducted «The Marriage of Figaro» (both by Mozart). In the same year he succeeded Sir Georg Solti at the head of the Orchestre de Paris. From then on, he conducted the major orchestras of the world, particularly in London where he had his permanent home. In 1981 he conducted «Tristan and Isolde», his first Bayreuth performance. Barenboim played the 32 Sonatas for piano by Ludwig van Beethoven and Beethoven's 5 Piano Concertos, both as a pianist under Otto Klemperer and as a conductor with Arthur Rubinstein at the piano. As a pianist, Barenboim played Johann Sebastian Bach, Frédéric Chopin and Johannes Brahms as easily as he played modern piano music, and as a conductor he concentrated largely on the Viennese classics, French music, Anton Bruckner, Pyotr I. Tchaikovsky and Sir Edward Elgar. He accompanied great singers, including Janet Baker and Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau. From 1982 onwards, together with Jean-Pierre Ponnelle (who died in 1988) and the musicians of the Orchestre de Paris, he organised a cycle devoted exclusively to Mozart. In 1989 he resigned as conductor of the Orchestre de Paris in order to take over the new Opéra de Paris (at the Place de la Bastille). But before he took up his appointment he resigned as a result of arguments with the theatrical director.

      SCOTT SIMON, host:
This week in Ramallah Beethoven's "Moonlight Sonata" tippled from a worn piano in the Friend's School to a roomful of surprised youngsters. Now Beethoven is familiar to the music students there, but the man whose fingers were pushing the old Steinway to speak for him, for Beethoven and for humanity was an unexpected performer. Daniel Barenboim, director of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, an artistic director of the Berlin State Opera and a world-rank pianist, is an Israeli citizen. He sidestepped Israeli checkpoints to come to this school. His trip to the West Bank is the latest in a series of bold performances that have stirred controversy and debate in Israel. Christine Spolar was there. She's a reporter for the Chicago Tribune and joins us from Jerusalem.

DANIEL BARENBOIM 22 July 2003 9.30pm-10pm A transatlantic superstar, one half of the classical music world's most golden ever couple, and long-time leader of two of the world's foremost orchestras, Daniel Barenboim nevertheless maintains a work schedule that takes him all over the world. Both a pianist and conductor, he says simply, "I like to work and I like variety." Born in Buenos Aires but raised in Israel, Barenboim was the son of two Russian-Jewish piano teachers, and enjoyed a childhood, during which "it never dawned on me that there were people who didn't play". The Barenboims' young prodigy had performed his first concert by the age of seven, and completed his first world tour at 18. Soon Barenboim came to Europe in search of work and was, by the early 60s, settled in London. Barenboim is no stranger to controversy, either professional or personal. With his wife, the magically gifted but tragically fated cellist Jacqueline du Pre, Barenboim enjoyed the most celebrated musical marriage of his generation.

Daniel Barenboim's Biography Daniel Barenboim was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, in 1942. When he was five years old, he began his first piano lessons with his mother, continuing with his father, who remained his only other teacher. In August 1950, when the young artist was just seven, he gave his first official concert in Buenos Aires. Mr. Barenboim received his general education in Israel, where his family moved in 1952. Artur Rubinstein and Adolf Busch, who had already made great impressions on him in Argentina, as well as Edwin Fischer and Wilhelm Furtw ngler, whom he met in Salzburg, became important influences in his development as a musician. He also attended Igor Markevich's conducting classes in Salzburg and studied harmony and composition with Nadia Boulanger in Paris. Mr. Barenboim made his debut as a pianist in Vienna and Rome in 1952, in Paris in 1955, in London in 1956, and in New York in 1957 with Leopold Stokowski. From then on, he made annual concert tours of the United States and Europe. He toured Australia in 1958 and soon became known as one of the most versatile pianists of his generation. His recording activities as a pianist began in 1954 and during the 1960s he recorded the Beethoven piano concertos with Klemperer, the Brahms concertos with Barbirolli, and all the Mozart concertos in the dual role of soloist and conductor with the English Chamber Orchestra. During the same period, Mr. Barenboim started to devote more time to conducting, and, in 1965, he established a close relationship with the English Chamber Orchestra that was to last for more than a decade. Together they played innumerable concerts in England, the United States, and Japan. Mr. Barenboim made his conducting debut in London with the New Philharmonia Orchestra in 1967, Berlin in 1969, and in New York soon after that.
