Or so we are led to believe. But one pianist is fast proving that there is another way: Jill Crossland has been carving her own path through the competition for several years now and the release of her first CD with Warner Classics is testament to her success.

It is disarming to experience this serious young man with his delicate manner as he plays with such emotional involvement and pianistic care." "His performance of Bach's French Suite No. 6 was lively, buoyant and lyrical. Mr. Kasik is especially drawn to the Romantic repertory. His accounts of four Chopin works were poignant and supple, and in Rachmaninoff's Sonata No. 2, he came into his own. His impassioned, poetic approach served the music well."

Among his CDs and records solo albums, many piano duo performances (with Sara Fuxon in “Duo Beer Sheva”and with Meir Wiesel in “Duo 4”), as well as with various other artists, occasionaly as a member of larger ensembles. Table 1 contains all of Bart Berman's 14 audio units. When a picture appears in the leftmost column it is indicated that the unit appeared on CD, and likewise the right column indicates an analogue (long play record or audio tape) publication. Many of Bart Berman's records were re-issued on CD. In this case, there will be pictures in both columns.
While some of the titles are easy to find at larger (web-)music distributors, others were made by specialized companies, whom at times published the CD or record in a limited quantity. The links are given for the convenience of the reader of this page and do not imply a preference of the site manager, or an offer to buy products. T he T reasure T rove LP LIST C ONTRIBUTORS THE LONG PLAYING RECORD GUIDE ... 7" RECORD GALLERY A sultry night with Curzon and Jorda in the Spanish Gardens
When Falla started working on this composition he gave it the title "Nocturnes" which still indicates the atmosphere of the three sections. Most pianists and conductors play the work in a well structured manner and even sometimes with a certain straightforwardness. Curzon and Jorda however work together in a fine tuned atmospheric recording. Jorda is a conductor from the old school and he takes time for phrasing and subtle dynamic variations and so achieves a sense of sultry and mysteriousness, the air bearing heavy scents. It is a rendition which was hardly experienced before (and after, I must say). This performance shows once more all too clear how crucial the cooperation is of all the musicians involved. A true treasure that was well recorded with the piano well embedded in the orchestra.
High Fidelity Beethoven
The liner notes of Westminster WL 5075 deal extensively with the structure and the nature of Beethoven's Op. 111 and Op. 2 No. 2. There are however no data about the pianist Kurt Appelbaum with whom Westminster started a complete cycle of Beethoven Sonatas. From six discs produced only the one containing Sonatas Nos. 9 and 24 was well received (WL 5090). Westminster apparently abandoned the project and substituted Appelbaum for Paul Badura-Skoda but Demotte says that the wisdom of this choice was to be questioned because Badura-Skoda was much too young.

AUFBAU - March 6, 2003

78. Notes On Franz Schubert By Pianist Bart Berman

http://www.geocities.com/Vienna/1938/completing
NOTES ON FRANZ SCHUBERT Completing the Unfinished Sonatas by Bart Berman Schubert’s unfinished piano sonata pose a problem for performers: should incomplete sonata movements be played at all, or should they only be performed up to the very point where the composer ceased writing them? Should they be performed with someone else’s ending, based on the thematic material Schubert left us? Among those who tried to compose endings to the sonata movements discussed above, are Willy Rehberg [Schott Edition], Ernst Krenek [Universal] and Paul Badura-Skoda [Henle]. Henceforth I will analyze the best known uncompleted sonata, piano sonata in C major, D 840 and its completion. The principal theme in the first movement ( Moderato ) is a 4/4 melody , reminiscent of the A-minor sonata D 845, composed in the same year 1825. But unlike D 845’s melancholic mood, this one has a brighter, happier atmosphere. The theme is then repeated in a march-like manner, after which both second theme and codetta, leading into the key of G major, turn out to be variations of the same principal theme. Add to this the subsequent Development section’s sole dependence on motives already heard, and a definition of the whole movement as monothematic suggests itself strongly. This section features the martial character of the principal theme’s continuation, together with an almost orchestral sense of drama. The Recapitulation omits the initial, more intimate setting of the principal theme, only to return at the final moments of the Coda.

[About the notion of Punctuation and Phrasing
The meanings behind slurs, fingering, and motif development Pei-Fen Chen
Treatises since the 18 th century have provided clearer ideas and instructions for music interpretation. However, there are always no definite answers of articulation and phrasing for a specific style of a composer. F. Couperin's L'art de toucher le clavecin may have introduced some of his contemporaries' performing habits, but it also presented more of his own techniques. Furthermore, it is hard to ascertain if J. S. Bach favored using a harpsichord or a clavichord in playing some of his keyboard works, so Rosalyn Tureck's interpretation of Bach's music with the harpsichord would be one possibility. How about C. P. E. Bach's ? It revealed some of J. S. Bach's revolutionary ideas of performance practice, but the theory can sometimes be harmonized with the music of later composers in the 19 th century too.
