BEETHOVEN'S PIANO SONATAS
AN INTRODUCTORY COMMENT ON THE MUSIC CRITICISM OFFERED HERE
Beethoven at the Piano
As lay people, we can find expert comments on the works of classical music in books, periodical publications and in CD brochure comments. These may be rendered from a variety of viewpoints: from that of the biographer, that of the musicologist, that of the music critic or that of the active musician. Here, with respect to Beethoven's 32 piano sonatas, first of all, I want to list the relevant literature that I found in the bibliographical listings of the books I consulted in creating this section. Besides Thayer's standard biography, the authors I consulted are, in alphabetical order: Barry Cooper (Beethoven: 2000), Joachim Kaiser (Die 32 Klaviersonaten Beethovens und ihre Interpreten: 1975), William Kinderman (Beethoven: 1995) und Maynard Solomon (Beethoven: 1977 und 1998). The following list is arranged in the alphabetical order of the authors of the works I found and lists the titles of the works written by them, particulars with respect to each publication and by what above-noted authors they have been listed in their respective bibliographical sections. Autor Title Particulars with respect to the Publication Mentioned by:

Musicians and Chess
Some great players have been first-class musicians. For example Taimanov (1926-) was an International Grandmaster (1952) and one of the world's best ten from about 1950-1956 at the same time as being a concert pianist. Conversely Adolf Brodsky (1851-1929), a first-class chessplayer, gave the first performance of Tchaikovsky's violin concerto after its dedicatee declared it unplayable, and later became conductor of the Halle Orchestra and then the Principal of Manchester Collegue of Music. Those who have reached the top in both fields include Philidor (1726-1795), reputedly the best player of his time and a talented composer, and Rudolf Heinrich Willmers (1921-78) who played music and composed chess problems. While playing Schumann's 'Carnival' in a piano recital in Copenhagen, Willmers stopped suddenly, wrote on his cuff, and then continued. He explained afterwards that he had been struggling for a week to solve a difficult problem when the solution came to him in a flash. 'I had to jot it down to get it out of my head and let me concentrate entirely on my playing.' If you look through your games collections you may come across.

in the Vienna International Piano Master Class with paul baduraskoda, Alfred Brendeland the following The phenomenally talented pianist, Christopher Czaja
http://www.esdonk.nl/stijlen/artiesten/christopher_czaja.htm
In the USA Czaja Sager won several important First Prizes, including the "National Auditions for Pianists in Washington, DC", First Prize of the Harpsichord Society of New York, the "Van Cliburn Alumni Scholarship of the Juilliard School" and the First "Artist Support fund Award". After his successful Lincoln Centre debut in New York City, at the suggestion of Rudolf Firkusny and Olga Koussevitsky, Czaja Sager moved first to Vienna and thereafter to the Netherlands. After participation in the Vienna International Piano Master Class with Paul Badura-Skoda, Alfred Brendel and Jörg Demus, Christopher Czaja Sager was unanimously awarded the "Förderungs Stipendium" to further his career. Further studies, notably with the clavichordist Hans Philips ad the pianists György Sebök and Earl Wild, broadened Czaja Sager's musical horizons. His deep study of J.S. Bach's Klaierübung has produced new discoveries, first published in a monograph and soon to appear in an extended study, as well as the complete cycle "die Klavierübung", which he has recorded and performed throughout Europe since 1985.
His concerts in all the great music centres of Europe, annual Master Classes in Germany, Belgium, Austria, Turkey, the Netherlands and the USA, his highly praised recordings of J.S. Bach in particular, bear witness to a rich musical life.
