For the Pianist Here is performance information for the pianist without apologies. There are numerous excellent books for organists and harpsichordists from which I have been forced to extrapolate to the piano. Badura-Skoda exhaustively covers all facets of Bach performance on the piano: rhythm, articulation, tempo, and that endless bug-a-boo, ORNAMENTS! He is fearless in expressing his insight and opinion on ornaments and their execution. Musical examples are plentiful, avoiding the need to fetch scores. Of particular interest is his section on the Chromatic Fantasy and Fugue, a short chapter on 18th c. organ-barrels(!), and a Gouldian Imaginary Interview on the "Urtext Problem". "Interpreting Bach" is an informative reference book reminiscent of Rosenblum's "Performance Practices" in scope and ease of use. Well worth the investment for the pianist knocking on Bach's door seeking entry. Badura-Skoda can help open it for you.

The artist immediately captivates the listener's ear, and her sensitivity and affinity for the music don’t take long to convince. Slight pauses signal artistic breathing, and the quasi pedal point accentuation of the underlying tonality demonstrates great understanding. With such a stupendous technique, it is no wonder that the runs sound like ringing strings of pearls. Thus it is Paula da Matta who made the major contribution to the CD's sub-title 'Chopin: Triumph in Vienna'! Born in Brazil, Paula da Matta received her bachelor's and master's degrees in piano from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, and continued her studies at Indiana University under Menahem Pressler, Beaux Arts Trio's pianist. She completed all three programs with summa cum laude. Lately Ms. da Matta has been coached by Ondine de Mello. "A young pianist whose talents will delight music lovers everywhere."
Menahem Pressler , pianist "A remarkable talent with a natural musical expression and a beautiful sound."
Paul Badura-Skoda , pianist and musicologist "Undoubtedly, an extremely talented young pianist who has a splendid career ahead of her."

Further Information Sound Sampling is currently disabled Paul-Badura Skoda is a brilliant pianist, fortepianist and harpsichordist, who has made a number of recordings of the great repertoire for piano on "original" instruments. This set, the first of three including Schubert’s piano sonatas on fortepiano, allies his excellent performances with the sound of an authentic piano, such as Schubert himself played. Far from the sound of the omnipresent Steinway that one hears on disc and on stage, the fortepiano allows the performer to develop different nuances. This instrument has a shorter sustain than the modern piano, and this alone gives the music a different sound.

The speciality of these lost recordings of the "New Testament for the pianists" is that they presumably are the most "Viennese" of all complete recordings of Beethoven's sonata cycle.
As a bonus the booklets of all CDs are provided with Badura-Skoda's extended and insightful commentaries and thoughts about each sonata (in German), furthermore there are analyses of the works by Harry Halbreich in English and French, and an essay about the essence of the sonata, its origin and development during Beethoven's lifetime, also written by the pianist. The interpretation of the works is lively and urging, but sensitive and well-balanced. (For instance, see the convincingly correct tempo at the beginning of the "Hammerklavier" Sonata op.106, which played by other pianists often is sounding in a hysterical or pathetic way, or the vital and colourful interpretations of the "Waldstein" Sonata op.53 and the "Appassionata" op.57.)
