FAIRFIELD, CONN. - Pianist Emanuel Ax, revered as one of the greatest musicians of our time, will perform on Friday, October 25 at 8 p.m. at the Regina A. Quick Center for the Arts at Fairfield University. A pre-concert "Art to Heart" discussion with Dr. Laura Nash, director of the Fairfield University Classical Music Department, will take place from 7 to 7:40 p.m. Renowned for his elegant, soulful interpretations of both classic and modern compositions, Mr. Ax has graced the stages of the world's premiere concert halls. Committed to his art, he performs about 100 times a year, pairing his poetic temperament with major symphony orchestras and chamber music ensembles, and commissioning and debuting innovative new music. He's also known for a longstanding musical partnership with virtuoso cellist Yo-Yo Ma, with whom he's played for more than 20 years. A 2000 Seattle Times review hailed Mr. Ax as "one of the finest musicians to sit before a keyboard" and a 1998 New York Times critic wrote that he played with such understated beauty "that one simply stepped back in awe and gratitude."

Pianist Emanuel Ax and conductor Daniel Harding join the Deutsche Kammerphil-harmonie for a concert in Bailey Hall this Tuesday, Nov. 9. The concert features Ax playing Mozart's Piano Concerto in D minor, and Harding conducting the 35-person orchestra in the Lyric Suite for Orchestra by Alban Berg and Mendelssohn's "Italian" Symphony. Ax is known for his virtuosity, poetic temperament and the breadth of his performing activity. His distinguished career includes numerous appearances with major symphony orchestras worldwide, the commissioning and performance of new music, recitals in the most celebrated concert halls and additions to his acclaimed discography. He last appeared on the Cornell Concert Series in 1990 with violinist Yo-Yo Ma. Only 24 years old, Harding is a rising star on the international music scene who already has conducted such orchestras as the Berlin Philharmonic, Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra, the London Symphony Orchestra and the Los Angeles Philharmonic. This is his first season as music director of the German philharmonic orchestra. Founded in 1980, the Deutsche Kammer-philharmonie is based in Bremen, Germany, and has become a leading international chamber orchestra, appearing regularly in the major European music centers. The orchestra has also made highly successful tours of Japan, the former Soviet Union, South America and the United States, where it became the first German orchestra to perform at the Tanglewood Festival.

Pianists Emanuel Ax and Yefim Bronfman perform Brahms’ Variations on a Theme by Haydn for Two Pianos in the first program, Brahms’ Sonata in F minor for 2 Pianos, Op. 34b in the fifth program, and Dvorak’s Slavonic Dance No. 8 in G minor, Op. 46/8 and Rachmaninoff’s Suite No. 2 for Two Pianos, Op. 17 in the ninth program. Devoted to chamber music literature, Mr. Ax regularly collaborates with such artists as Young Uck Kim, Cho-Liang Lin, Yo-Yo Ma, Peter Serkin, Isaac Stern and Jaime Laredo. He has made a series of acclaimed recordings with Mr. Ma, and as a duo they have won three Grammy awards for the Beethoven and Brahms sonatas for cello and piano. The pair has also teamed with Richard Stoltzman for a Grammy award-winning album of clarinet trios and with Pamela Frank, Rebecca Young and Edgar Meyer for the Schubert “Trout” Quintet. The Ax-Stern-Laredo-Ma Quartet has toured and recorded extensively in recent seasons, including piano quartets of Beethoven, Brahms, Dvorak, Fauré, Mozart and Schumann for Sony Classical. This past summer featured appearances at the BBC Proms and at the Aspen, Bad Kissingen, Ravinia, Salzburg and Tanglewood festivals, as well as a series of concerts in the Far East. Not only were all the planes cancelled, Ax couldn't even have found a taxi to get to the airport. The last-minute cancellation, however, came only late the night before the performance so ticket holders could not be notified. Happily, he was able to juggle his schedule to return on Sunday, March 14 at 4 pm to fulfill the engagement. Ax is a "superstar pianist" in demand worldwide, and his performances are booked up to three years in advance. Previous ticket buyers to the sold-out event were notified to replace their tickets. Any who have not yet re-contacted the Bach Festival Office should do so. Because the Annie Russell Theatre on the Rollins College campus was already booked for the March date, the concert will take place in the adjacent Knowles Memorial Chapel, which has a somewhat higher seating capacity. Therefore, a number of tickets will be available for purchase at $40 each for reserved seating and $15 each for unreserved seats with partial view.
